AMG logo history help

I’m curious if anyone knows when the newer AMG logo with the hashmarks or stripes preceding the AMG letters began appearing on cars, wheels, trim pieces. I have a 1991 300E AMG 3.4 and the door sills and Aero 1 wheels have the newer logo. I’m unsure if they are OEM or the previous owner swapped them with newer ones. Thanks

Hard to say, but right around 1992. The Aero I flat face AMG wheel that was introduced during the Gen II W126 era (1986 - 1991) also had a version that had the ///AMG logo near the end of the W126 chassis, so I would say 1992.

Looking in the AMG 45 book, the wheel logos seem to change to ///AMG for MY 1992 cars in the pics. However, there were some exceptions - the AMG OZ Racing 3-piece wheel was produced as late as 1997 (I owned a couple with 1997 dates) and that wheel never had the ///AMG logo.

Looking at the VIN card my car had a build date of May 1991 and a release/delivery date of July 1991. It’s close enough to 1992 where I’m like it could be correct OEM and the previous owner is would’ve been silly to change just those two things. But it’s far enough away where I’m questioning it.

The earliest dated 990 3.4 I could find was 12/18/1990. I would imagine the original AMG parts were still being used on those vehicles to offer them. Perhaps it took them a while to come up with the new logo, manufacture rims, among other parts etc. so that's just my thought to further support the 1992 date.

I was looking at a 990 3.4 from 11/1991 and it still had the original logos.

The new style logo was introduced on the 1992 model vehicles. Specifically the 190E 3.2l and 300E 3.4l cars. AMG did not recast the Gen 1 ducktails, so 92 and 93 models with the ducktail had the old style logo. There were several types of gen 1 front bumpers, early style with logo and slightly updated with no logo. Most 92/93 models had the gen 1 with no logo, but have see a few with the logo. (see picture, top two)

There were plenty of other parts/wheels/decals with the old logo that were incorporated into 92/93 models, so it wasn't uncommon to see a mix of old and new logos.

First two pictures are from a 1992 300E, ordered new, via ala carte with most options EXCEPT the 3.4l motor. You can see the wheels have the new logo and the ducktail the old logo

So do you think in May 1991 for a car ordered to go straight to AMG they could have spec’d it with some bits with the new logo?

It's possible, its hard to say exactly when these new logo parts became available. Your 91 seems like a mid production car but, the pictures you show seem to show aftermarket AMG parts that look like aftermarket items, specifically the door wood and door sills. 1991 is too early for inclusion of AMG options into the VIN, but it never hurts to decode your VIN to see what data it returns.

You also show original AMG Aero wheels, which to my knowledge, only had the old style AMG logo on them and basically were phased out in the late 80's. I have though, seen a few sets of these with the new logo, come up for sale used. I have not seen these in any AMG wheel catalog FWIW.

It does not make much sense to me to reissue a discontinued wheel with a new logo and especially since they use the larger center cap than the original Aero 1's, thats great since they can use the newer Mercedes caps, but it would be a whole new design, requiring new programming and tooling.

For reference, these particular wheels carry a part number of hwa1244001902. Maybe someone with EPC access could look up that part number and see it its a legit HWA part.

AMG of Japan had some parts that were not available elsewhere and were designed for use in the Japanese market. I could see them retooling for a production run of a discontinued wheel though.
