The first prototype is running great in my own car so now I have another in stock for anyone interested in putting this new design to the test.

I can build this for the W124/W201/W126 at this time.

The mirror has;

Auto dimming
Homelink 4.0 (should be usable up to 420 Ghz)
alarm LED on the bottom (blinks automatically when the car is turned off)
4.3" GPS touch screen display (Currently running Igo 2.2 International)
4 gig SD card included for GPS software and maps (will support 8 gig card not included)
Integrated Bluetooth for handsfree talking on your cell phone
GPS display also serves as backup camera display (no backup camera included)

If you have the patience, you can watch an indepth video I put together explaining all the features of this mirror.

This first one is being offered at $350 plus shipping ($15 US shipping, $45 International). Of course I expect the new owner to provide me with end-user feedback to help me improve the design

Very impressive Rik.

I am thinking of getting an incar camera to record "events" whilst driving. Such equipment exists now but if a camera was able to record the forward view that would save another gadget in the windscreen.

Its funny that you mention this, as I was just thinking to myself if there was any potential market for this in a mirror. If I was still doing "track days" it would come in handy. Anyway, there are two such options potentially available. One has two forward facing cameras that records the left and the other records the right and they are displayed on the internal 4.3" screen. Video is recorded to a 32 gig SD card, H.264 720P 120 degree wide angle. It is also auto dimming and can use a backup camera. The other option is more or less the same but one camera faces forward and the other faces the rear

Not sure if either of these are suitable for "conversion" though, I would have to look into it if someone was really interested.

I would want front and rear view, nice wide angle lens.
I do not want to see what the cameras are seeing in real time just "rolling recording", so when the store is full it starts to overwrite.
Plus some of the other goodies...

Oo I'm interested in a mirror with cameras! Would be nice to have one ready at a whim. I always take my setup down as to not entice thieves. Sometimes I don't put it back up in time to catch spur of the moment action.

I will inquire and see if I can find out more about how they operate and if the cameras can record while the display is turned off. Will also inquire as to the auto restart when SD card is full option.

The DVR camera are at a minimum one month out as they are new products. The recording function as I have been told, will go till the card is full and continue recording and overwrite the card in a continous loop. The camera angles are also suppose to be adjustable.

:D Sounds promising! Continuous loop is great for accident recording or for in case you get pulled over and need to prove you either had your seat belt on or weren't on the phone. No need to press a button first.

Any chance to get radar detection features build in?

I am not aware of anyone making such a unit. You can though get the remote displays integrated into the mirror, but thats just a display the actual detector still needs to be mounted in the vehicle somewhere.

I would like a mirror with integrated wi-fi Hotspot capabilities (802.11n), as well. And a built-in 4G cell phone handsfree would be nice (or at least Bluetooth), too.

Thanks 2Phast :)

The Android version of the GPS mirror is suppose to have a 3G/3.5G wcdma/evdo module. But no time frame for the product though.

I was just joshin' ya .... per our previous email exchange, I'll need a mirror though, for the 126....

I figured that, but it seems getting internet access and providing a functional web browser in a rear view mirror is a soon to be reality.

What mirror are you interested in? I have the auto dim with backup display and a GPS mirror in stock, along with the normal mirrors.

That is a brilliant idea! I love it!!! Is there any chance that it could be stripped down to not have all the extra apps? Can it just boot straight into the GPS app once the car is started?

I have two of these being built, one is sold, the other is available.

It is what it is, the only options that can be removed are the Homelink and the auto dimming feature. The WinCE apps/menu/GPS/Bluetooth are not optional items.

On cold boot, it is configured by default to boot right into the GPS. Normally though, when you turn the car off, then on again, the GPS returns to where it prevously was. The flash memory stays energized when the car is off.

Oh that sounds good. Thanks for the info.

is there an installation manual available?

I have installation guides for my mirrors but not one specific for this mirror. It's a mute point though as I am not going to sell these types of mirrors. Dealing with overseas manufactures with their less then stellar business practices and "iffy" quality control has soured my enthusiasm.

Hi,
Really a great idea as it requires a minimum visual changes in our vintage cars (no big screen as a Command system for instance). I already have the auto dimming mirror on my car but a mirror like yours with GPS, bluetooth cell phone connection, Homelink, camera recording front and rear, reverse camera, front and rear radar parking detectors, and why not camera recording when the alarm of the car gets on to record who gets in, would be great. As our cars do not have volumetric sensors for the alarm, why not add two as well ?
I don't really care about the internet, the music or the videos...
Alex

The GPS mirror does not have camera recording functionality. The camera recording functionality is available in mirrors as a stand-alone feature with a backup camera function only (no auto dimming). The camera recording function does not use any type of trigger though, just your plain on/off or start/stop via a button.
