It looks like the E420 might does have asr, so you may want to check the date on the throttle body and snag it and the grill. Your car looks great. Nice pictures. Thanks for sharing.

Correct, this has FGS VB. It's straightforward but very messy, plan on taking an ATF bath. The trick is keeping the VB completely clean out in the yard. Bring clean plastic bags so you can immediately wrap it up after unbolting. You may need to remove the exhaust crossover pipe, sometimes this interferes with pan removal... sometimes you get lucky and it doesn't.

:banana2:

o boy im more worried about the car falling on me fml. Ill have to take someone with me to supervise. So im looking at grabbing the e gas, eta, first gear start, grill, and will anyone buy the headlights, or anything else worth grabbing I dont want to come back there its a bit of a hike and sketchy area.

Bring clean plastic bags so you can immediately wrap it up after unbolting. You may need to remove the exhaust crossover pipe, sometimes this interferes with pan removal... sometimes you get lucky and it doesn't.

:banana2:
Bring THREE kitchen-size plastic bags. You will need 13mm and 10mm sockets (and extension) either on a 1/4" or 3/8" ratchet. Plus, you will need a Philips-head screwdriver to remove the transmission filter once you get the pan off.

Getting the pan off is usually a significant PITA, because it is a very very tight fit between the pan and the crossover pipe. However, with some working back and forth, it can be done. What I try to do is use a spare jack from another car, or a long pipe to "lever" the crossover pipe JUST out of the way far enough so that you can work the pan to clear it with the other hand.

MAKE SURE that you remove the FGS valve body and intermediate plate and KEEP THEM HORIZONTAL ... ON THE SAME PLANE AS THE GROUND. This will ensure that none of the plastic parts fall out. Once removed, you can tilt the FGS valve body a bit to help drain off some of the remaining fluid. DO NOT LET ONE SPECK OF DIRT TOUCH THE VALVE BODY from the pan area or underside of the car. HAVE A TRASH BAG READY TO PLACE THE VALVE BODY INTO. Then place that bagged valve body into a second bag. And then what I do is put it into a third bag. Reason being, is that you will find that kitchen garbage bags, while lint-free, let transmission fluid leak through them like a sieve. Even three layers of garbage bag, the trans fluid will leak through in a matter of perhaps 15-30 minutes.

What I then do is place the bagged valve body into a paint roller pan in the trunk of the car. This places the valve body at a very slight incline and lets fluid drain off of it. You can store it in an out of the way place in your garage this way indefinitely. Dirt and dust won't get through the garbage bags to sully the valve body, but the fluid will leak through and drain off almost completely over time.

If you sell the valve body, what I do is buy a Tupperware container at your local Dollar Store that is JUST the right size. Then I wrap the valve body very tightly with fresh trash bag, and then wrap it extremely tightly with packing tape, on the outside of the trash bags. Then I put the assembly into the Tupperware container and seal it. The tight wrapping of the valve body will keep the plastic pieces in place while it's being shipped, if turned upside down or whatnot as these things always are.

As GSXR said, you will take a transmission fluid bath, particularly on your arms and wrists and shoulders and chest. You can get mostly of the way of the fluid deluge, but you will never totally escape it, even if you let the transmission drain for 15-20 minutes first (you will be very surprised at how much transmission remains in the pan after you remove the pan....so also keep it as horizontal as possible). Often the wrecking yards will puncture the trans pan and drain out the fluid very quickly, then plug it with a rubber bung plug. Even after they do this, there is probably close to a quart or two of fluid in the pan. So wear your oldest clothes and rubber/nitrile gloves when doing this work. It's a PITA, but you can easily get $175-250 for a good valve body. It's probably about 20 minutes work, maybe slightly more if you're grunting to get the transmission pan levered past the crossover pipe.

Which reminds me .... I have two nice FGS valve bodies I need to sell.......

Awesome thanks for all the info sounds like this should be fun im up for the challenge =) as long as I can save some money lol. Ill probably grab some heavy duty contractor bags.

Get the metal exhaust bracket, and also get the thick "U" metal transmission support plate. These are V-8 only items.

See this thread for the exhaust support bracket: http://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6357

Also see this thread for a lot more info on this; I believe this support bracket is either super super expensive, or actually no longer available from MB: http://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5233

The transmission support plate is the thick "U" shaped plate shown in this photo. Four bolts hold it to the car.

Does 1995 E420 ETA fit 500E cars?
92-93 ASR are interechangeable with large connector.

94-95 ASR are interchangeable with small connector.

You cannot use an early ETA on a late car, or vice-versa, as the connectors are different. Must match connector and ASR vs non-ASR.

That ETA in that pick looks like a NON ASR one though.
It sure does! Complete with green decal. I wonder if someone installed the wrong ETA on the car...? Need the part number to confirm.

:scratchchin:

Looks like a solid "haul" of parts. Let that valve body drain!!! I don't think a scratch on the valve body from the pan will harm anything.

Yep, that is 000-141-93-25 which is for a non-ASR, 1994-1995 E420.

I'm really confused since the pics show an ASR unit behind the driver headlight, and the car should definitely have ASR. My guess is, someone replaced the ETA and put in the wrong part! I think it may have been driveable but would have no cruise control and probably poor idle control (if any), and of course throw a bunch of codes. Crazy!!

Anyway - the ETA is useless for your E500, but it would be a good core for someone that has a 94-95 E420 without ASR.

:runexe:

Bummer Well I can always get credit at the yard and grab some other things that will sell. Hb the fgs valve body I removed ?

If you paid a bunch for the ETA, exchange for credit might not be a bad idea. Otherwise you may be able to sell it in the E420 parts forum, or on eBay. Those are relatively rare items.

The VB is correct! Installation is reverse of removal.

Quiz..."can a non ASR ETA work with a car with ARS "deleted"?

me thinks a pic of the 500e got published in the donor car pictures post 152, the heat wrap air tubes.

Talk to Jono about that one. I believe he did this on a track rat? May work for a race car, but I'm pretty sure you would not want to have it in a street car.

You are right! And that solves the mystery. The engine compartment photo is not of the salvage E420, it's from some other car, probably an E500E.

If you look closely at the junkyard E420 with the hood up, you can see the ABS unit behind the driver headlight, confirming it's a non-ASR car. I thought that engine compartment looked awfully nice for a rusted-out 034!

Hey Terry ,

The seats are done and look great they are the two previous pics I posted. They are matte like factory and not shiny and greasy looking anymore.

The caliper paint I used was VHT high temp bright red . Its used for Headers but I have used it on all my cars in the past and it lasts for a long time.

A few updates !

Its been a bust couple of weeks with the E . I was able to install the fgs and change the trans pan gasket filter etc. the car is much more fun to drive ! It was not as bad as some have mentioned all though I encountered some thunderstorms and had to finish in the rain ! I managed to not make a mess.

I also ran a resonator delete and a muffler delete for about a week. I was testing the waters on what sound I wanted. I purchased a used Remus back box for a w124 and had it installed the other day. As I was leaving the muffler shop I wanted to hear the sound at higher rps and ended up getting a speeding ticket haha. I havent had one in years but what can you do its the end of the month quota is due. 60 in a 35 supposedly.

Needless to say the backbox is much quieter than no muffler which I am a bit disappointed with. Although no muffler was very droney at highway deceleration .

With that being said I may consider selling the backbox or installig a cutout which will allow me to drive quietly when I choose and have some rumble when I please.

Also some shots of Eurohangar in Michigan this past weekend

Did I read you right the no muffler or resonator for about a week? With nothing behind the CATs it has to sound like a garbage truck. That would get old pretty fast.

On the REMUS is it rated at the 240 kw? or for a smaller six cylinder motor. If it's smaller than the required 240 kw on the M119 it's not letting enough exhaust thru.

Also I can't believe that you would be disappointed in the REMUS sound if your running a Y-pipe in lieu of the resonator.

With my RENTECH back box I had to remove my TV-Y-Pipe it was just to loud. After about a week I redid the resonator Y-Pipe with a Magnaflow muffler for a Camero adapted to the original MB resonator in and out pipes.

What do you mean by 'leatherique'? Is it a product brand? The result looks amazing.

Hey Terry ,

The seats are done and look great they are the two previous pics I posted. They are matte like factory and not shiny and greasy looking anymore.

The caliper paint I used was VHT high temp bright red . Its used for Headers but I have used it on all my cars in the past and it lasts for a long time.

Yes it is a product brand called leatherique . I would say it is the best product for leather on the market but I could be wrong.

Mark,

That sounds pretty good but I am not willing to trade. Besides I think I promised gsxr that if I sold anything it would be to him. BUT I am not selling what I have because I have to many $$$ into it and finally got it tuned in pretty well.

I have a clip but I have never posted anything on U-Tube and it's kinda speeding on the street and my license plate shows BUT I'm not driving I'm filming. Maybe someday I'll learn how to post on the tube.

Haha no worries,
Would you say it was a as loud as your renntech pr quiter . Or does it sound like your current setup. I wanted to get a renntech setup but finding one is impossible so I jumped on this one. It still sounds sweet but wish it was a bit louder . Would love to hear your setup. If you have youtube on your iphone or android you can record a video and directly upload via your cell phone. Very easy [emoji108]

The 8 second clip is TV Y-Pipe and RENTECH Backbox and is a little louder. It's not just reving it up at a standstill. A friend accelerated away from me to his corner stop sign.

I think yours sounds smoother and a little quieter but it's hard to tell from a clip.

FYI, gsxr has a dyno run clip of his car w/ a REMUS and a Y-Pipe set up. I'm sure he could point you to it.

Also the serial number on your REMUS does not state the size kw of the muffler M119 is supposed to be 240 kw.

Awesome ill have to check it out.
I am going to have my friend drive my car so I get a listen to it outside of the car with a drive-bye. Hmm ill have to look into the kw it came from a w124 e420 I was told.
