I will never truly understand the fascination that some E500E owners have with Porsche regalia/badges associated with their cars. The last time I checked, the E500E left the factory and was sold with a Mercedes star, not a Porsche emblem.

It did however get recognized with a Porsche serial number at the Porsche museum in Stuttgart as Porsche 2758 in 1994 . What I do makes no sense I know.

Really? How and where on earth did you discover that Porsche had a 2758 serial number for the 500E?

Lord have mercy, one learns something new every day around here!!

Serial number or Project number? TYP 2758 is the internal project designation for the E500E @ Porsche.

Not coincidentally, that was my obscure vanity plate (no one knew it was personalized) for my 3+ years of ownership until 5 January 2018 as my 500E turned 25 in the eyes of VA so I now have a antique plate reading 'SCHAF' :-)

If you look it up there are several articles referring to the car as a Porsche 2758 and if you do an image search the e500 pops up. I meant model number not serial number. Again in my opinion the only reason this car is valuable and appealing is because of the rich history with both Porsche and Mercedes. Flared fenders being the iconic Porsche feature on the car. Im not putting Porsche badges on it its just a key and two other very small and unnoticeable additions like a plate frame and key/keychain lol. To each his own [emoji3]

It was the model number that was listed at the Porsche museum. Awesome love the antique plates ill be able to get mine now too !

Dude, Maw, have you been hanging aound reddit or 4chan too much? We are the same generation and I can count on zero fingers the number of 40-something friends I have that say “Lit!”or “FIYA.”

BTW I had to Google “FIYA,” which previous to this thread, I thought stood for Foundation for Interscholastic Youth Athletics.

:-). :-)

Thanks bro, I was pissed that whenever I would pull my car under my car tent at night I couldn't find the keyhole to lock the door so then I did some research and found this oem led key =)

If anyone is interested the Porsche part number is 94453833100
you can find these on ebay.

Funny... kids aged 19 and 15... We'll all be old, conservative Benz fogies soon enough. No need to rush it.

I understand on the Porsche 2758 thing....I happened to be the one who actually discovered it back in 2011, when visiting the (then-new) Porsche Museum shortly after it opened. They haven't had the E500 Limited on display for some years though....

Original thread: https://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1418&p=9195&viewfull=1#post9195

I always say, if you want a Porsche, buy one. The .036 is a Mercedes-Benz, through and through.

I notice your key has the Benz stamp on it though. Does my friendly Benz dealer have access to those?

maw

well I had three keys so I cut the plastic off one of them and fabricated it to look exactly like the one on the left which is too thin and cannot be cut to work. Im pretty sure you can order the key from Mercedes for not too much. Maybe someone can touch base on the cost if you do not have more spare keys.

And I always say I have a Porsche hybrid haha. If want one I can easily buy one but I like my discrete Porsche 2758 ;)

Except it's not. It was design built by Porsche at the Porsche factory under contract for MB, in limited handmade numbers with painstaking detail.

And that's what makes it special. Precisely because it ISN'T a Mercedes-Benz through and through.

We all get your perspective. But it doesn't invalidate others.

BTW, when people talk about the Panamera, I always say "My 4-door Porsche wears Benz components and emblems."

For shitz and giggles I may stop by a Porsche dealer to see if they can make a key for a '92 Type 2758... since the car came from the factory with Porsche karma already applied under the sheet metal and all.

maw

That fact instantly gave me more respect for the 928 automatics, actually. Before I knew that, I only wanted a manual.

maw

Seeing that it was made mere kilometers from Stuttgart/Sindelfingen, and that it shares a lot of its parts OEMs with Mercedes-Benz, and a common Swabian heritage, I think it is well qualified to wear the MB logo proudly.

Will you also commission a special MB logo keychain and retrofit the key into an MB black plastic key-head? I've got a few factory-new, black plastic spare key-heads if you need one.

You also need to get a license plate frame with the phrase "The Best or Nothing" ... or "Engineered Like No Other Car in the World"

All you would then need is a contract production in a Mercedes Benz factory.

But wait, that’s only happened twice in history: both times by Porsche, once for Audi, the other for these.

Actually, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Porsche did quite a number of engineering projects for various manufacturers, including Harley-Davidson, during this time. Their engineering group was contracting itself out to help keep the company afloat.

Porsche also collaborated with Volkswagen AG on the Cayenne, which is a shared chassis with the Touareg, not to mention the Porsche 924/944 and the Porsche 914. For the Cayenne, Porsche engineering did most of the design and engineering work, but Volkswagen largely financed the project.

The following cars included some level of design, engineering and/or manufacturing assistance from Porsche. This is NOT a complete list.

 1. Audi RS2 Avant (assembly - larger engine, brakes, tweaked transmission, performance suspension; added Porsche alloy wheels + door mirrors; 2,896 produced; Porsche on rear hatch & in grill emblems, Porsche badged Brembo brakes)
 2. Mercedes E500E (assembly - larger engine, chassis tweaks, some suspension engineering, yadda; 10,479 produced)
 3. Volvo 850 T5-R (engine performance tuning, upgraded alcantara interior, transmission tweaking)
 4. Skoda Favorit (front suspension tuning; engine suspension)
 5. SEAT Ibiza (Porsche decals; some models had Porsche engines)
 6. VAZ-Porsche 2103 (aborted project with Porsche tweaking suspension, interior and exterior)
 7. Lada Samara (Porsche helped develop engine; Samara T3 rally car used Porsche engine + 959 4WD system)
 8. China C88 (Porsche designed this entire car)
 9. Harley-Davidson V-Rod (Porsche designed engine and collaborated on cycle design/engineering)

To be fair, this is a picture of the electrical connection to the heater blower in the engine bay of my P-car.

Now I need all of those cars haha

Why would they put Porsche on that Rs2 you need to contact them lol

Porsche also supplied Mooney Aircraft with engines for some time in the 80s - 90s. I believe it was the much loved air cooled flat 6. I've heard it said Porsche was an engineering company that built cars.

Got my wheels back from refinishing [emoji851]

These guys did a hell of a job and it cost me only 780 mounted tires and disposed old tires. They fixed any issues I had with the wheels.

Its pretty bright I believe it is an Led.
So it was pretty tedious but I got it done. Safety goggles and a grinding wheel was the first step. After I got the big chunks off I used a number of small files to perfect the shape.

Is there a transponder chip in that? Curious to know if this was possible to do on a facelifted 036.

Transponder chips (part of the DAS system) were never used in the 124 chassis, not even late production. DAS (Drive Authorization System) was phased in haphazardly over the first ~2 years of W210 production, and I think it was used in other MB's as of 1996 USA model year as well (129, 140, etc).

Anyway - this key mod should work just fine on any year 124; although if you happen to have a late-production non-USA car with IRCL, you'd give up the remote locking function.

:hiding:

I believe it was phased in a year or two earlier in non-US countries (starting in calendar year 1993), but debuted in the US with the W210 as of model year 1996, and other models too as Dave says.

There were several generations of the DAS that were phased in successively over just a few years. My 1995 model G320 has the first generation DAS 2, which uses the first-gen IRCL (infrared remote locking) that controls power to the starter. There is no code nor transponder for my DAS 2 system that is programmed via the STAR C3 system./HHT. DAS 2 was similar in most ways to DAS 1 and 1a.

The second generation DAS 2a and on required an electronic code, and introduced a transponder. DAS 3 was even more complex.

There are four sub-generations of DAS 2, and then DAS 3.

Some info on DAS is attached.

[GSXR edit: There is also a DAS X version, used on some 1997 W210 models, and possibly others. The first few years of DAS were a complete mess.]

Hey guys the winter is still holding up in Chicago but nevertheless ive been constantly doing somthing to the E.

In the last couple of months I was able to ;

- have my wheels refinished
- rebuilt trans by my tech and adjusted shifting points
- replaced shifter bushing
- just had a custom exhuast built by Mitch at Hi Line automotive in Downers Grove, IL.
- purchased an oem benz bobblehead dog lol
- getting an alignment tmrw

Trans shifts great now as prior my reverse was at a 4 sec delay.

The custom exhaust is all german parts by a company called Vogue. They are in partnership with Top Gear USA so they are branding everything Top Gear USA. Mitch got rid of my crap y pipe and did everything as it should be. My resonator has been deleted and a custom built muffler has been made. I have an electronic cutoff valve installed after the muffler on one tip. This is because when open the flow goes through just one pipe and the car is louder. When closed you can cruise on the highway and not be annoying by the louder exhaust although I’ll probably have it open all the time. The tips are square as I thought they suit the car nicely.
