Big ouch...

Stuff like this is why I'm reluctant to invest too much in modifications. You can (usually) replace a mostly-stock car with a similar one, but if you've spent untold amounts of time and $$$ with customizing / personalisation... that's a different story. Besides fighting a losing battle with insurance trying to explain the value, you'd have to repeat the time/$$$ to duplicate what you lost.

I had just finished a mechanical restoration of my wife's 1995 E420 in early 2013... finishing touches were a new battery and new tires. It had quite a few upgrades including stuff like 500E sway bars front & rear. Then, yep, it got totaled by an inattentive driver a couple days after spring Daylight Saving time change (please, let's end DST forever). She had minor to moderate injuries which required shoulder surgery, but the car was toast. We were devastated. It was a long, painful process to fight with insurance. We had to get a private appraisal. Insurance could not get past the nearly-200kmi odometer reading, regardless of the restoration and near-mint condition.

The 94 E420 we replaced it with has remained nearly stock. I couldn't bring myself to repeat the level of effort I had invested in "Quicksilver", pictured below.

Talk about timing. Another forum member, who had also invested in SUBSTANTIAL amount of time & $$$ in his rare-color, rare-optioned E420... just totaled it. Photos here:
