Brabus Tempamatic Installation

After seeing this on Talbirs silver 500e, I really wanted one of these, so with some luck (and a shitload of dead presidents) I bought one of these from German Ebay. Needless to say, these are extremely rare and this one is only the third one I have seen.

Anyway, this unit was complete and included the switch panel, exterior temp sensor (not used) oil temp sensor and associated wiring.

First item on the agendy was to fix the switch assembly, which didn't want to lock in place. The seller neglected to state that this was broken. Easy fix though, using a small spring and a screw/nut, I fabricated something that worked.

Next up was of course figuring out the wiring and determining placement of the oil temp sensor. Minor progress was made by posting on different forums, but the majority of the info was figured out on my own, but thats another story. :deadhorse2: From extensinve searching, I did find a copy of the original installation instructions, no thanks to Brabus (they were less than helpfull)

So, on to the oil temp sensor, as you can see from the pictures, it was fitted to a 6 cyl drain plug and wouldn't come out. On to the trusty grinder to get rid of the 6 cyl drain plug. A hole had to be drilled in a M119 drain plug and reamed out to fit the new sensor, the sensor is almost as wide as the M119 drain plug, so it was a bit tricky. The sensor was fitted and some JB weld was used to seal the end and secure the sensor in place.

The light switch panel also required a good amount of work to install as the lower bolster needs to be removed and cut. Along with the bolster mods, you need to trim some of the dash metal as well. My opening is bigger than what is needed for others, as I removed the LED from the trim panel and mounted the Basslink volume control here.

The outside temp sensor was used, I just need to tap into the green and bown wires from the stock dash display. This was where I pulled illumination and switch 12v from as well. The oil temp wiring was routed into the cabin via a large grommit near the rear of the cluster.

The cluster LCD display is a direct bolt in for the original display. Only downside is the readings are in Celsius. The LCD display is also housed in a metal box sealed with lead. It was taken apart to verify that there were no jumpers in there that might allow selection for Fahrenheit, but no such luck.

The mods to the oil temp sensor/drainplug were just finished, so this has not been installed yet. Being slightly paranoid, I am going to run some high temp heat tests on the plug to ensure the JB Weld is going to hold up to the heat.

Oh, since the headlight trim panel is from a post 90, it uses a different light range adjuster, so my pre 90 switch does not fit :banghead: One more hard to find item I need to source

Well done for persevering on this. You are one sick individual.

Out of interest how important is an oil temperature reading? How does this differ from the info you get from coolant temp i.e. surely if coolant is warm, then oil must also be warm.....no?

Also, apart from oil temperature, what other info is most important to a driver of a 500E but lacking from the instrument cluster. For example I have a battery drain on my car (still) so some kind of voltmeter would be very useful.

I'm thinking
-Oil temperature
-Ammeter/Voltmeter
-tyre pressure monitor
-fuel consumption

What would be important to other people?

Awesome job Rik!
How many Benjamins did it cost you?

no thanks to Brabus (they were less than helpfull)

I don't think it fair to blame Brabus since at the time that these parts were out they were brought in by DAZZ motorsports and its been around 15 years.

Its just recently that Brabus is now part of CEC, and prior to that they were Brabus USA which was direct from Germany. My dealings with Brabus LP/CEC the current company was a wonderful experience. They were helpful and honest.

So you're the one that outbidded me?? :bat:

Oh, it is fair to blame Brabus, this item was never sold in the US, so CEC has nothing to do with it. I went directly to Brabus of Germany with my inquiries and its not my first dealings with Brabus. I had also purchase a M103 Brabus head and needed information to fit it to my motor, they were more concerned with where I bought it then helping me. Even after I told them it was purchased from Ebay, they still were not helpfull and never provided the information I needed, so the item was re-sold

The importance of oil temp depends upon your monitoring needs and the use of your vehicle. As it functions as part of the cooling system, it allows you to monitor actual engine temps. Water temp alone does not provide accurate information, plus, oil loses its viscosity at certain temps, so its another monitoring tool to use.

You mainly see oil temp sensors are race cars (and/or high performance) vehicles and these cars normally employ oil coolers as well.

For everyday drivers, its probably not that important, its probably more bling than anything else (on a 500e). The 190e 16valve is the only older MB that I can think of that has a oil temp sensor, but they mounted it in the oil filter housing, which is not a good place to pull temps from.

I've purchased one too and it's brand new! In mine the temperature sensor is attached to a modified oil dipstick (as you can see in the pic). I'll be installing it soon and I will post pictures of the process/disaster.

Hey 500E Spain - I was also bidding on that but it just went for too much in the end. At least we've figured out where the sensor goes now!

Sorry about that! Last time I was outbidded but this time it got to be mine. I'll share the instalation process with you as soon as possible.

Hi,

I've been quite busy lately so I haven't done the instalation myself; my mechanic did it for me so I don't have pictures of the installation process. Anyway it is not a dificult job but time consuming.

- The outside temperature sensor which is very similar to the original one, goes behind the license plate in the front so you just have to change the original for the new one and then run the wire through the engine bay and the firewall to the dash and connect it to the module/screen (there is a scheme on the module so you know where everything should be connected).

- The oil temperature sensor is attached to a new oil dipstick, so you just have to change it and run the wire too to the module on the dash.

[attachment=4:2n468dlm]P1000282 - copia - copia.JPG[/attachment:2n468dlm]

- The new screen only has three more wires: positive, negative and ilumination.

- I also had to change the light height regulation switch. I had the newer one which is too small for the hole on the new Tempamatic panel so I had to change it to the older which is bigger. A Y shaped new pipe is needed for the retro conversion, aviable at the dealer.

Would you be interested in selling your old light height regulation switch and the little plastic vaccum tube connectors? My Tempamatic uses the new style switch and while I do have one, I think it is defective. Let me know.

I scored a Brabus-Tempamatic some years ago, but both temp.sensors are missing as usual. I have the type with the OE style switch, to be mounted in the HVAC panel. But the sensors are independent of the switch type, so they are the same in both cases AFAIK.

This is rare stuff, and so is the information about it. But in case someone has any knowledge about this it would be great if they could chime in here. Maybe someone with this equipment installed could measure the sensors without unplugging them?

FWIW, the later model Tempamatic systems had the sensor at the end of the oil dipstick. The sensors in the drain plugs always end up leaking

BRABUS originally used the Mercedes-Benz oil drain plug, drilled a hole through the entire oil drain plug, and added a small tube to it. You can see the result on your pictures.
With improper usage of tools the sensors looked afterwards like your one. And especially for the M12-variant the modification was weakening the oil drain plug to much and it was not resistant to the high torque.

BRABUS didn't add the small tube at the end in later versions anymore, see attached the attached picture. This is one of the last units sold by BRABUS in 2009.

MD000258.JPG
For the M14-variant I did the same. The M12-variant instead is made out of a single screw with a bigger head, which should also solve the problem. With the right copper gasket, it should not leak.

Yes, that's true. I can confirm that. You can also use two oil temperature sensors, if you want - or for whatever reason two outside temperature sensors. They are technically the same for both variants.
BRABUS also sold units, which only measured the oil temperature, which used the same sensor. But those were originally not available for the W124, but for the G-modell as far as I know. However, I've also seen them installed in some W124s.

See BRABUS Tempamatic Öltemperatursensor M12 Mercedes-Benz W124 R129 or BRABUS Tempamatic Öltemperatursensor Mercedes-Benz W124 R129 M14 for example.
Text is in German, but I can translate it, if necessary.

Outside temperature sensors would also be possible, if there is a high demand.

Hello Christian

This was very good news and I like to buy a temp.sensor from you, but I hope we can take it outside Kleinanzeigen. I have to check which plug I need and PM you later on tonight.

Thanks! :thumbsup2:
