Brake Flush Question

Regarding this write-up on flushing the brake fluid

(HOW-TO: Replacing 500E/E500 Brake Fluid | "HOW-TO" Tutorial Articles),

Does it matter if the pressure bleeder/brake system is still pressurized when you do the final engine-on bleed of the ABS/ASR pump? In other words, can you disconnect the pressure bleeder completely, start the engine and THEN open the valve on the pump for the final bleed?

The FSM procedure says to keep the bleeder/system pressurized until after you close port SP and shut off the engine. I'd follow the procedure unless you have some unusual circumstances.

That said, I don't think it matters if the reservoir remains pressurized while you are bleeding port SP. The precharge pump is feeding the ASR unit and it I don't think it will hurt if it isn't pressure-fed.

Top Gear Top Tip: Bleed the last (front/left) caliper until the pressure feed bottle & hose are empty, where the MC reservoir is just starting to show a hint of air pocket at the top. After you start the engine and bleed port SP, the final level will be very close to MAX when finished and you may not need to siphon off excess fluid.
