Hi,

I am new 500E 1993 owner. I would like to upgrade brakes. I found this

02-08 Mercedes R230 SL55

Front Left & Right Brake Caliper Calipers Set

Silver / 0034203183 / 0034203283 OEM

Can I fit these brakes or whats best hassle free brake upgrade should be done to 500E

Thanks

R230 front brakes do not bolt up to the 124. Yes, you can make these fit but a number of modifications are needed. I believe the early SLK55 front brakes are 340x32 with a 6-piston caliper. If you're going to do that much work, I'd get the larger 360x32 setup (from other AMG's). Either one will require 18" wheels.

The best hassle-free upgrade is the "Silver Arrow" brakes from the late R129, with 334x32mm fronts, and 300x22 rears. 100% bolt-on to all 500E's that came with the 320mm front brakes. If your 1993 500E is early production (need the VIN to confirm), you'll either need to source late-style lower control arms (LCA's) or grind the early LCA's for clearance. Late LCA's are NLA from MB and aftermarket late LCA's are notorious for very short balljoint lifespan, and the BJ is not replaceable. Also, if your 500E is Euro-spec and late production, it will already have the 300x22 rears, so you'd only need the fronts. The 334x32 front calipers require a 17" wheel.

Spend some time searching the forum, there is a massive amount of information about the Silver Arrow brake upgrade. There is some information about AMG brake upgrades as well but none of them are bolt-on or hassle-free. If you have a stock 5L engine with 322hp, the Silver Arrows are plenty for normal street driving.

BTW - welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the reply. I want to go direct replacement looking for R129 calipers and discs. The car is 1992 production. There is also light weight rotors from different manufactures for reduce un-sprung weight. Do you have any specific brands anyone used?

1992 production 500E will need some minor modifications, because any larger front brakes sit ~6mm deeper, and will touch the ball joint area of the front lower control arm - see previous post for details. Also, you may need to trim the rear dust shields as well, to fit the 300mm rear brakes. Previous threads discuss all this in more detail.

I have never seen any lightweight rotors available for this specific application. Rear 300x22 rotors are still available from MB. The only aftermarket brand I'd recommend is Zimmerman. Second choice maybe Ate. I would not buy aftermarket Brembo rotors.

Exact my experience .Brembo afterm, arket are scrap.Too sets for an w212 mopf buyed.both are wobbeling after 2000 -4000km .By OE Benz after 10000km no problem. And Brembo gave the price of garuante back.

I found two website for R129 rotors

They are claiming to have lighter rotors. But dont know if any good then oem. Any comment?
Those are complete brake upgrade kits with aftermarket calipers and even larger rotors. You can't use those rotors with "Silver Arrow" calipers.

I have no idea about the fitment or quality of the kits above. Both likely have all components made in China. The CompBrake kit with 360mm rotors requires 18" wheels. The SL Shop kit is extremely overpriced for only a 340mm size.

Depends if you want a kit proven to work well on the E500E, or if you want to roll the dice and be the guinea pig.

I agree just i want to share for info. As you see so the prices are very high and not reliable as you suggest. But “Part Numbers for Silver Arrow Brake Components” tread parts nos are brembo but you suggesting they are not good. Whats the direct oem numbers i need to get?

Part numbers in that thread are all valid - but as mentioned previously, some items are NLA so you can't buy them new from the Mercedes dealers. You'll need to contact a dealership to inquire about current availability and pricing.
