500E Catalytic converter options - advice needed

HI,

I need top replace my cats. What would be the best option apart from MB? I have found Magnaflow P'n'P set up or would consider to use universal cats welded into original pipes. Secondly, my car is from Japan therefore it has this exhaust temperature sensor. Is it possible to get rid of of it and what would this involve.

I have found few post here but could find a very clear answer.

MB is not an option, the factory cats have been NLA for years. Used ones in good condition are difficult to find. There's no simple answer, it depends if you just need to pass local emission testing, or want the best quality / long lasting aftermarket cats, or want super high flow, etc etc. Good cats are stupid expensive. If you don't have smog testing you can delete them.

I believe the Japan-spec exhaust temp sensor can be deleted, AFAIK all it did was turn on an idiot light in the instrument cluster.

:seesaw:

That can be shipped within USA. To go overseas it would need a freight forwarding service. Would be difficult to box/pack properly though!

My cats were not very expensive and they are still holding up after almost 9 years. I wouldn’t hesitate to install them on my other car too if the time comes. Before I run the car through emissions testing I change the oil, and get the cats as hot as I can by driving across town in 2nd at about 4000 RPM and idling at 2000 RPM in line before it gets to be my turn. I got complacent one year and didn’t heat sink it before testing and it failed. The cats must be hot to do their job. Went back the next day and passed

Jon, are your MBS cats still available? I tried finding them today and it seems they might be NLA, or replaced with something different?

:apl:

Carus oldtimer parts claims that they have front exhaust with cats.

I orderd rear subframe mounts and they seem good quality.

Edit: Brochure attached

Has anyone tried these “AB Catalytic” cats? It’s a Canadian company that makes them to order, but also goes by other names like “exhaust evolved.”

I'd swear those were discussed before, and the general thought was that $450 USD for a complete bent pipe with 2 cats, would likely be somewhere between junk and trash. A single high-quality aftermarket catalyst can cost over $450...

That's what I thought. So it's probably best to have it all custom made with good quality aftermarket catalysts?
