Hallo to everybody!

my name is Andrea and i live near the famous racetrack of Monza, in the northern part of Italy

i'm a Porsche 356 and early 911 addicted and collector, involved in this world for more than 20 years.
i love to restore my cars with the "only nos" philosohy to reach a world class restoration method.
i'm also a gentlemen racing driver since i was young, and now i like to drive during track days sessions around Europa circuits with my 964RS race car.

I felt in love with 500E 10 years ago, when i discovered the history of the car by a former Porsche AG engeneering and when i drove the car for 300 km between France and Italy.

But until now i did't find the real motivation to buy one.

finally the right point arrived: my third daughter!

now i need a 5 seats sporty sedan with charme, soul and connection with Porsche , of course.... And the best vintage solution is 500E as you all know!

first problem:
500E has 4 standard seats.

i have no problem to rebuild the back seats for 3 persons ( remeber my restoration skills)

But i'd like to know from you if somebody made the same mod in the past, and if yes, please post a picture and tell me if he needed to ask to Mercedes a special documents to register at MOT the car as a 5 seats sedan instead a4 seats.

thanks in advance and compliment for your site ( that use the same engine of "my" favourite porsche forum, los angeles based: early911sregistry.com)

ciao
Andrea

Welcome to the forum,

a 3 seater bench seat has been done a number of times. the lower bench is removed by pressing the clips and pulling the bench out. then you will have remove the console and screws. 3 seater bench should fit without further mods AFAIK.

Andrea, welcome aboard! You can install the "standard" rear seats from any late (1990-up?) W124 sedan. These are commonly available used in the USA, I'm not sure what availability would be in Europe.

David Hendy has a set for sale, link below:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/190689023191

Remember that you also need to add the middle seat belt.

:welcome3:

Perfect, thank you.

Is it easy also to install the third central seat-belt? Can you use the standard w124 belt?

Actually... I believe you will need to install all three of the late-style belt sockets. The two existing 500E belt sockets are a different design. But yes, it's all bolt-in. The parts should be cheap as there is little demand for this stuff, it usually ends up going to the crusher with the rest of the chassis...

:duck:

Ok. I see that it's simple also to install a standard central seat belt.

first problem solved. Thank you.

now the second: try to buy the car i saw in germany ( 43.000 km - brillantsilber - 1 owner - fantastic condition - official mercedes mantainance program ) as better as i can....

Another question.
the seller says :

"This Mercedes 500E is from the 1st series (Mopf1) and was first approved in 1993 in Japan"

what does it means? Why japan ? This car is obviously a lhd car and the seller is german.

thank you.

Andrea, all the .036 were left hand drive btw...

Hmmm...sometimes 'funny' cars come from those little islands. Buyer beware.

Hello Andrea, and welcome to the global center point for the 124.036! :-)

It is nice to see Europeans gradually joining here. Good luck in finding a 036.

Greetings from Norway.

Thank you to everybody.
yes the car is the one 195910 posted

what's the problem with japan market?
perhaps they are use to transform a quite 300 in a 500?

i bought lots of 356 from usa but only for complete restoration project.
i want to buy new car only in Europe because i need to see them with my eyes.. All nuts and bolts...

Hi Andrea,

Problem is with no documentation to prove what you are buying and what was done with it before, PLUS the cars with no documentation or annual inspection are decommissioned cars..basically scrap cars !

Your best bet for a proper car is western Europe, mainly Germany,Switzerland and Holland.

Hello Andrea,

Welcome. I just read this thread for the first time. I am also a member of the Early 911S Registry and I have been following your 68S restoration with great interest.

I bought my 94 E500 seven years ago and use it as my daily driver. It's a great car, especially with the opportunity to drive it on the Autostrada. I'm sure you will be happy with yours when you finally find one.
