Did the US version come with cupholders? Or anyone tastefully fitted one? sorry guys, got to have my starbucks on most trips :)

No cupholders on Benzes back in those days. I don't think they were phased in until the W210 chassis, at least on the E-class.

Most MB dealers (and many online sites, such as Performance Products in the US) sell squarish cup-holders that screw onto the door panels below the interior door release knobs. I have owned these on other W124 cars and I don't particularly like them -- once you install them they put holes in the interior materials. If on a 500E, the holes would be in the interior door leather. You see these quite frequently on 500Es, actually.

Generally I just put the drink in an insulated mug and hold it between my legs when driving. This minimizes the chances of spillage and is sturdier than a Starbuck's cup with lid, and no sloshing. Not a fan of cupholders and there are actually very few options on cupholders for the E500E.

Here is a photo of the cupholders that the dealers sell (at least here in the US), though this one has a mahogany exterior rather than the more typical MB-Tex:

Cheers,
Gerry

Here's another aftermarket cupholder (which I think was actually utilized in the R129 SLs) that is sold by Griot's Garage (www.griotsgarage.com) here in the US. I actually have one of these installed on my motorcycle and it's a very nice, German-designed and made mechanism.

I tell passengers & others who inquire about lack of cupholders that Germans don't believe in drinking & driving, lol. :D

I agree with Gerry, I dislike the square type that screws through the door leather, but both my 500's arrived that way courtesy of previous owners. They do work fairly well when needed. Otherwise, I find that if you flip the armrest up, open the center roll-top box, put your drink in the console box, and close the roll-top lid until it touches the cup... you've got a nice solid place to keep one drink. But not two drinks. Your passenger will have to hold their own. The rear roll-top box would probably handle at least one cup for rear passengers in the same manner.

I do this with EMPTY cups (like when I pull into the parking garage on my commute) but not full or half-full ones. Too much slosh potential if you have to hit the binders.

Cheers from Plano (Dallas) TX. Drove the E500 up from Houston to Plano yesterday. Drove like a champ - got 'er up to 110 MPH on I-45 but the Texas DPS (Department of Public Safety) smokies were out in force once I got north of Centerville (half-way).

Ooops, I should have clarified. I only do this with cups that have lids... don't think I'd put an open-topped drink there, for the reason you describe. But then again, I wouldn't drive with any open-top cup! Even with a proper cupholder, too much possibility for an unexpected spill. My main preference is bottles with screw-on caps.

:drink:

Thanks guys. Not a fan on the ones attached to the door as this can cause spillage when opening/shutting the door if you forget. However, I do like the ones from "ultimatecupholders" so i will look into these.

Gerry, you're brave placing it in between your legs.

When you chew tobacco for decades and drive as I did, you learn how to handle cups between your legs. Although I'm no longer dipping Copenhagen or Kodiak, the skill of cup-handling transfers nicely to a sturdy, insulated, spill-proof coffee cup.

Cheers,
Gerry

Just purchased the Porsche version from ulimatecupholders - after talking to the website owner, it is apparently compatible with the W124

You can see the results in the attached pic, it fits nice and snug, but I have yet to fully roadtest - I may yet switch to the drivers side as well, I will report back as and when

Thanks for the reminder for ultimatecupholders I had those years ago in my bmws and could not remember who made them. Please report back. My roll of duct tape cup holder is a little too hillbilly. But it does work!

Will do - although since we both live in DFW - I know there has been some talk about a DFW 036 get together....

Yes, that’s exactly what the maker suggested (Porsche version fits) to me too when I got mine and I can confirm they fit well on either side. Infact i got ‘his and hers’ , so fitted nicely on both sides. They are flexible enough for you to adjust so most cups and bottles snug nicely in ‘em. Much better than those tacky looking plastic ones ;)

Very sweet indeed. Which version is it? There's two Porsche versions on the site.

Its the version that is for the Porsche 996/997 i.e NOT The one that is for the Boxster

My car came with four of the square ones. They kind of suck, but not as bad as the ones in my 2003 R230 that pop out under the nav unit. If the cup spills in the R230 it goes all over the electronics. Brilliant design.

My sister in law had to have her Mercedes transmission replaced dut to a drink spill

I sent the owner/manufacturer of the Ultimate Cupholders an inquiry. Here is his response:

Hi Greg:

I’ve had quite a few use the version for the Porsche 996 in the W124 E Class cars and they’ve seemed happy with it. The placement is a little more restricted than in some cars since the trim at the side of the console starts to angle up fairly sharply beyond a certain point and it will depend on the positioning of your seat.

Assuming that you can place the holder at a point where the height measured from the floor to the lower edge of the trim where it would slip under is no more than about 6" then it should be fine. Ideally, you want it tucked up closer toward the corner formed by the seat and the center console. That puts it off to the side and under the highest bend of your leg when seated. As it's positioned more forward, then the angle of your leg will be lower and closer. If space is restricted for whatever reason I've had a lot just put it on the passenger side in the same location and in most cars it's not a far reach for the driver.

Thanks, appreciate your interest. Please let me know if you have any questions and I’ll be happy to help.

Mike

Mine arrived today from Ultimate Cupholder, it took exactly one week from Annandale, Virginia to Sweden. Impressive! One as christmas gift for my father and his 500E, the other one is going in my E420.

reporting back as threatened/promised on the ultimate cupholder

I have used it with everything from a 12oz soda can through a grande Starbucks to a 32oz Big Gulp

It took them all in its stride without a drop spilled - works well on the passenger side - well within reach

definitely recommended by me and better than the door cupholder solution

O no don't say that you drink in your car

Only 32oz? I roll with the Valero 60 ozer. Everything's bigger in Texas :Tejas:

The door-mounted holders have worked well for me.

Don't look like that cup holder is being used though ....lol ! I'm more interested in that somewhat indifferent gadget below your head unit ?

Now try shutting your door with a Starbucks coffee in that holder .

Here we go Gerry - just for you, taken this afternoon 52oz QT cup,:- photo.JPG

granted its squeezed a little at the bottom, but that actually works in its favor, driven around with no problem.

And I agree on the "On door" ones, have to cut into the leather and its all fun and games until you shut the door with a Hot Starbucks attached...

Here's the Valero 60er....

Yes, Californians ... That's a real, honest to goodness STYROFOAM cup (with a credit-card-sized Texas window vehicle emissions/safety inspection sticker in front of it). Designed to keep drinks ice cold for hours in the Texas heat & humidity.

Ever seen a styrofoam cup before?!?

You all must have much bigger bladders than me!

i really like the ultimate cupholders suggested here. I ordered one for each w124 and have enjoyed using them (albeit with fewer ounces.)

Last time I spent any time in Texas was about 1985 and I was shocked to see people driving down the road with an open beer can on the dash. I guess things have changed since then.

I agree with texas993. When you start pushing your late 50's you'd better be near a rest stop with a cup that big!

From what I'm told, it wasn't that many years ago (within the past 10 years, I think) that Texas finally prohibited open alcohol containers in cars, as long as they were held by a passenger.

They still allow citizens to carry firearms in Texas too, and you don't even need a permit to carry one in your car. The long door pocket of the 126 SEC works well for assault rifles. Guess that won't help Ron, in Illinois, though....that state's a bit behind the times when it comes to recognizing the Second Amendment.:sniper:

Re: Ultimate Cupholder

First off, thanks to those of you who provided me feedback regarding your Ultimate Cupholder ownership experience. I had been delinquently meaning to buy a set of these & finally did. I’ve always felt the UC was a smart, robust, pleasing design utilizing an ideal location within the scant placement possibilities of the 500E. I was unable to find a better alternative.

The UC looks like a piece of Skandinavian art.

UC 002.jpg

I purchased 2 cupholders for my 500E ( Model: Porsche 996/997/991; felt-color: black). Payment made using Paypal. Quickly delivered within 2 days to East Coast USA.

UC 001.jpg

The cupholders are fit into location between the transmission tunnel carpet & center console cover. The cupholder has not interfered with my feet, legs (I have fairly long legs), or car seat while driving long or short distances .

Fully functional, and best of all, Chick approved.

UC 004.jpg

The UC handles a wide variety of cup circumferences, but I chose not to test the accommodation of the official 1 liter Oktoberfest mug.

UC 006.jpg

+ 1 on the Ultimate Cupholder ownership experience, I've been using these for years, moved them from my BMW to the Benz Beast

Same here in my BMW and my 500E it really works great ulimatecupholders plus it doesn't make up anything inside.

I just ordered an Ultimate Cupholder for my car. I was disappointed with my previous cupholder thus getting it replaced. Looking at the reviews on this thread, I'm glad I made the right decision.

My 500e came with one of the fischers cupholders off a w210 and 3 broken cheapo ebay ones haha, RIP my door material.

Today I installed a recently ordered "Ultimate Cupholder" on the driver's side of the center console of my E500. Very pleased with it!

I'm going to get a second one for my 560SEC. Very high quality product, and the company is located in Virginia, so not too far away.

Gerry - try it in the SEC first, It isn't as robust. May take a small flat head Phillip's screw into the side of the vertical carpet

LOL! Yeah, the owner of my donor used the roll-top box as the cup holder. I had a nerve-wracking helluva time removing the burlwood because there was so much "stick-tion" caused by the coagulated coffee/hot chocolate/soda/etc spilled down/on/into the console from the roll-top box.

Burl Wood Console.jpeg

Although, the goo made for a good preservative. :D

If that was a W210 or later they wouldn't have gotten far once all that slop made it's way into the electronics of the shifter....

My W210 wagon has not only (factory) folding cupholders in the rear cargo area for the third seat passengers, it also has a 12VDC receptacle, too! When I first saw the cup holders I figured the PO installed them. Imagine my amazement when I opened one to find the tristar and a part number on it!
