Hello.

When opening a forum folder I like to see all threads in a descending order, but as it is now I have to go in and alter the setting every time individually on each folder. How is it possible to change the default settings so all folders displays all threads in descending order?

-arnt-

Go to the "Settings" link at the top right of your screen. After clicking on this, then click on the "General Settings" link that appears in the left hand column. There you will find the "Thread Display Options" link which will allow you to adjust how all threads and forums are displayed. Play around with this setting until you find the combination that suits you.

Cheers,
Gerry

Thanks.

I've altered the general settings now and it works fine except for one strange thing - some of the forum folders don't follow the settings. F.ex. this folder do still show the threads in an alphabetic order, despite I've set it to view the thread with the latest post first??

This is on my PC here at work, I've not checked it at home yet. The company has very strong firewalls and guidelines about use of internet, maybe this can interupt this some way, I don't know.

Perhaps try quitting your browser and restarting it (to dump any cache), or try another browser fresh on that computer. Glad to hear we're getting a bit closer.

The logoff problem is a bit perplexing though. I've not experienced it at all since implementing the new vBulletin forum software.

If anyone else is reading this and is experiencing very short durations of time before being logged off of the BBS, please let me know. Or if you are not being logged off between sessions (meaning the system is working as I've set it up) I'd like to know that as well.

Thanks
Gerry

Gerry,

My personal setting doesn't function properly at my home PC either, and it is still the same here at work. Some forum folders sorts the threads as preset, others do not, so it appears to be random. It's a bit tiresome to correct this all the way, but I won't stress you now since you working so hard with adding up the attachments. I guess you look closer on this when you get time for it.

One question: on one particular computer/browser .... once you "change" the setting to sort the threads as you want them, does it change this setting for that particular sub-forum in the future, or does it retain the setting? I'm wondering if once you set EACH sub-forum, if it will retain the setting as you wanted it for that browser. Perhaps you could set the forum sorting, then log out and log back in and see if it preserves the setting. Just curious.

Thanks
Gerry

No, the the setting on each sub-forum doesn't remain when I'm logging in again. I haven't noticed all the sub-forum it appears on, but this sub-forum does have the problem. If you want I can make a list of which sub-forum it is affecting, just let me know. I will be away to Sweden tomorrow, so I will not be on the forum during the whole day.

Arnt,

You need to go into your user control panel (click on the "Settings" link at the top right of the page, then click on the "General Settings" link under the "My account" header in the left hand column of the page.

There are several options as to how you want posts displayed:
  • Linear with oldest posts displayed first
  • Linear with newest posts displayed first
  • Threaded mode
  • Hybrid (combination of linear + threaded modes)
You can see this screen in the attached image.

Don't forget to hit the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the screen after you make your selection !!!

You may want to experiment with these modes and see how you prefer to have things displayed.

Once set, this setting should be good for and apply to all forums. Again though, it's important to use an up-to-date browser (Firefox 4 or later, Internet Exploder 7 or later, Google Chrome, Safari 4 or later, and so forth).

Hope this helps :buggin:

Cheers,
Gerry

Gerry,

I have now tried several times to preset the thread sequence with the newest post first, but it doesn't remain. I don't know which Internet Exploder we are using here at work. I neither remember what's on the machine at home. I shall check out both. However - I still like the option for viewing all threads I have posted on.

Arnt,

I'm working on this with the Forum setting defaults. It's weird because some of the forums seem to be set as I like them (showing the most recent posts at the top) and others aren't displaying. But I am going to set the settings for each forum individually and we'll see if this helps. Of course, you can always adjust the forum settings using the controls beneath the thread display, but any changes you make here don't seem to remain ?!?

Also if you click on the thread heading bar (the blue bar above the thread display) you can arrange the thread how you want it. I choose the date column which moves the little black arrow to that column and re-sorts the display. If you click that column again (after the little black arrow is in it) it will change the display order from ascending thread display (arrow pointing upward) to descending thread display (arrow pointing downward). I have found this helpful in the past for making the thread display "sticky" in my browser, but it may not work for everyone.

I am working on the global/default forum display settings though.

Regards,
Gerry

Yes, I also uses the the top arrow to alter between ascending and descending, and I've also changed the setting using the controls beneath the thread display. But as soon as I've left that particular forum and go back in again, it's fucked up. I have also noticed that this affects the same forums all the time, and the other forums appears OK. I've also experienced as you say, that some forums don't show up at all, and I have to use the control panel in the bottom to get the overview up. I find these things a bit frustrating because it takes so much time. But keep on Gerry - I know you'll manage. :-)

Really? Has ANYONE else experienced this? Can you be more specific about forums that are not showing up? Can you take a screen shot of this?

I have not heard of this problem before, of actual forums not showing up. This sounds to me more of a browser display or connection issue, where the connection is timing out before the entire page is displayed or something. There should be the following forums that display ALL of the time:

  • 500E / E500 FAQ
  • Announcements and Admin
  • Site Feedback and Requests
  • 500Eboard.com Home Page
  • 500E / E500 Wiki
  • Maintenance Documents
  • Factory Literature and Brochures
  • Technology Topics
  • High-Performance Modifications
  • Interior Topics
  • De-Coding
  • In-Car Entertainment (ICE)Appearance and Detailing
  • AMG & Tuner Cars
  • Tools and Shop Equipment
  • M119 Engine
  • Transmission and Driveline
  • Brakes, Suspension and Steering
  • Wheels and Tires
  • Heating and Cooling
  • Electrical, CAN and Wiring
  • Troubleshooting and Diagnostics
  • Street and Strip
  • Track
  • Parts for Sale
  • Cars for Sale
  • Wanted to Buy
  • Off-Topic Discussions
  • Owners and Their Cars
  • Events, Meets and Get-Togethers
  • Member Roadtrips and Project Journals
  • 500E / E500 Automotive Press Articles
  • Historical Information
  • 500E / E500 Registry
  • FACTORY DIAGRAMS
  • Factory Press Information
  • Other Factory Information
  • Production Data
  • C126 Coupes

I MOST DEFINITELY NEED TO KNOW IF THIS ENTIRE LISTING OF FORUM NAMES IS NOT DISPLAYING IN YOUR BROWSER.

Cheers,
Gerry

Arnt, you also may want to consider logging out of the forums, deleting the cooking in your browser, and re-logging in to set a new cookie. Just a thought.

Arnt,

You're gonna be happy about this ... I **FINALLY** found the correct setting that sets all of the forums (actually, I had to set each individually) with the newest posts at the top of the page, in descending order when you call up the forum listing of posts.

I think this is the answer to what you were looking to do, originally. It only took me 8 months to find the setting, but I finally did !! Each forum should now default to the most recent posts, in descending order, displayed in order of when the post was made. The only exception to this would be "stickies" which are perma-stuck at the top of each forum where they exist.

Hope this helps.

New default and old default shown below....

Cheers,
Gerry
