Re: airbox
There were several different types.
The one for the M119 E60 had a HWA part number molded in, I think the part number was HWA 119 090 301. If there is not a molded in HWA number then save your money and make it yourself.
MB had 3 of them in stock about 2 years ago at somewhere around $1000.00 each.
I find this strange actually because why would a big company like Mann and Hummel make separate
tooling for just a few hundred of an item?
1) "/////AMG" logo on the side in place of (or possibly over) "Mercedes-Benz" with a removable silver painted Star. I have been told that the lettering was the same size as used on the 1990-1992 AMG cars, which I believe was a little larger than the latter and current type size. Aufrecht if anything was cheap, I mean a shrewd businessman, so he probably just used the rear lid logo on a piece of plastic that was glued and perhaps riveted on. But for your $1000. you got the entire airbox which is one of the few parts that would never wear out.
2) Same but with molded in silver Star and slightly smaller type.
3) Same but with black (unpainted) Star
4) "/////AMG" molded in the front of the center section of the airbox. Facing the engine -- it faces you. These show up on German fleabay for around 75-100 Euros every now and then. It may be an E50 item. Search for "AMG Luftfilterkasten."
5-7) Variants for the "500SL - 6.0," "6.0SL," and "SL60."
I believe, but am not sure, that all top covers are the same.
Parts numbers are issued to help internal employees easily pick the correct item from the shelves. So the smallest variant will have a new number. Example, if the air intake hose is a little longer and the item is sold with the air intake hose a new part number will be issued even though that exact box will fit any and all M119 engines.
All boxes were made by Mann and Hummel, who along with former AMG boss Morehinweg have decided to concentrate their efforts on building their businesses instead of answering my most trivial questions despite expert translation by Young Miss Rima (currently in Lithuania defending her Doctorate thesis) in German.
I keep saying what we (the Royal we) need is a good AMG book outlining it's history, not that fluff that has Stallone and the "President of the Prestigious Ferrari Club of Japan" (no disrespect to either of them) in their new, now quite used, AMG cars.
We need this before some of the principals are gone.
Just my 500E cents.
