Ex-William Shatner car (1992 500E) for sale on ebay

Re: Shatner Car at Mecum

The Ebay "auction" was pulled after 3 days by Ebay since it was not an Ebay auction I was simply doing an advertise to alert buyers in the market that this car would be sold at no reserve at the Houston Mecum auction.

Re: Shatner Car at Mecum

I hope to see it on the tele at some point....and that it sells for big dollars !!

Re: Shatner Car at Mecum

Well we will soon see what happens. If I had to do over again I would have had it go later in the day. There is big money here in the afternoon! One lady must have bought 10 or 12 high dollar cars. It is a muscle car crowd but there are quite a few nice imported cars here. Maybe there is someone here who appreciates the German form of muscle car.

Re: Shatner Car at Mecum

Looks like it sold for $15,000.
A bit less than I expected. I wonder what the reserve had been, back when it was listed with reserve. Sounds like someone got a good deal.

Yep, I was expecting it to sell for a bit more too.

Given the work detailed in post #'s 28 and 41, I was expecting something in the $20-$25k range. Someone stole it for $15k!

:e500launch:

Such a shame it was exactly same pre facelift and color combination as mine, otherwise I would have bought it...

If it was a different color, I would have been very, very tempted.

:apl:

I was purchased by a local Houston man who was very thrilled to have bought it. I thought it would go for between 15-20K and was very well bought no doubt. I'm glad it went to a fellow MB lover and I'm sure you guys will be hearing from him.

I was not Gerry. Man's name is Scott. Nice guy who has been looking for a good E500E for sometime. I think he found it!....please beam me up as I'm finished with my work here!

Live long and prosper, Warren.

No. I had planned to attend the auction in the AM to see the car go over the block, but had to take a day-trip for some work meetings in Austin, a 3-hour drive away. Just got home :(

Hi everyone -

I am a devout Trekkie and a member of the two other W124 forums as I have 1995 Cabriolet. I have been looking at acquiring a 500E to keep it company. For me, this car is the one that got away - perfect colors, perfect provenance. I tried to register to bid by phone, but by the time I found out about (I travel a lot), it was already too late. I was prepared to go into the low twenties to get it. It was a steal at $15K. I can only hope that it turns up again. BTW, my name is also Scott, just not, apparently, "Lucky Scott".

Yeah, wow, seemingly a total score for 15 grand.

I saw it on TV...I was hoping it went for much more tho !!

To be honest, I see quite frequently cars at auction that go for much less than they should. When you have (for example) German and Italian cars held at an auction in Iowa or Nebraska (middle America) they just won't bring as much as they would in Scottsdale or on the East Coast. Just don't have the market, and not the right venue.

A lot of auction sales and bringing "correct" prices is all about location, timing and attendees.

Absolutely. Auctions are good for selling a car quickly (i.e., you know it will sell that day) but there's a significant risk/reward dilemma involved due to the factors Gerry mentions above.

Flooby mentioned above that he was willing to bid >40% higher than the sale price... again proving Gerry's statement.

:seesaw:

What a shame to lose all that dough that was into the car to a low hammer price....then Mecum takes their cut to further lighten the pay out. Pretty sad.

Oh well, it goes into the books as selling for 15 grand for now and forever.

Hello all!

For what it's worth, I'm the new owner of the now forever referred to as "Ex-Shatner car". My 16 yo daughter was doing a search on the 500E because she just didn't understand how a 20 year old car could be anything special and found this post and site. She also has no clue that her '97 C36 is anything special....

At any rate, I'm now a member of the board and will surely post in the future.

Welcome and congrats! Please start an "Owner" thread in the owner's forum when you have a chance.

:welcome:

Wow! Your 16 years old has a C36? Lucky girl. When I was 16 I had a BMX. :deniro:

You wouldn't be the first (or second or third) to question my sanity for the C36. Truth is, I had special ordered a '97 C230 and they called to tell me it was in while we were still in the hospital when our twins were born, so I thought it would be cool to buy them one. While search for a clean, low mileage C230; I came across a black, 2-owner C36 with 76,000 miles on it for not much of a premium over the best C230s that I was seeing....and I WANTED IT! There should be some benefits to being the kid of a car nut, you know? Especially since I'm spending their tuition stocking my garage!

By the way, I had a '73 Pinto when I was 15.

By the way, I had a '73 Pinto when I was 15.

When I was 16 my parents gave me a 1976 Dodge Aspen station wagon (with the faux wood panels of course) to drive. Slant six engine (indestructible), posi-traction rear-end and a four-on-the-floor gear box. It was a box magnet...not.

:stormy:

I am happy to say that I shared dinner tonight with savmjv (Scott), who is the owner of the Shatner car here in Houston. It was an impromptu meeting after the MBCA board meeting but we had an enjoyable dinner. Unfortunately it was too dark out to really take time to see the car up close and personal, but we shared a wonderful meal and Scott shared his 3-inch-thick binder of all records, receipts and information on the car. This is the most bulletproof documentation I've ever seen on a 500E, all the way back to and including the original window sticker. It would take numerous hours to go through all of the records that are present for this car. It also includes an MB dealer VMI as well as faxed records from Shatner's mechanic in California.

Looking forward to meeting Scott again in the future. Great guy !! It's been fun to meet fellow Texans Scott and Patrick in recent weeks !!

Cheers,
Gerry
