Hi All:
I am in the process of repairing my 1992 500E and have need of used sections of the exhaust system as follow:

124-490-76-20 (Front Pipe)
124-490-77-21 (Muffler and Pipe)
124-490-78-21 (Muffler and Pipe)

The previous owner installed a home made system that has rusted out.

Many thanks,

Joe

Sorry, can't help with used OE, but if you might consider aftermarket, you could check with 5thscaleracer here:

Front pipe is identical to all 400E/E420, so if you can find a donor 034, that may help.

Center and rear pieces are unique to the 036.

Would this work?

I checked the compatibility and they say no for 1992 500E?
I think this will work. Otherwise just some minor adjustments for the mid section might be possible.

If it fits a 400E, it will bolt up to a 500E as well. But wow, that is cheap at $315! Makes me wonder about quality and fitment. I'd expect plain steel (not stainless) and the cats may not last forever like OE.

GSXR that may be why he wrote in the first post that he needed one: …"The previous owner installed a home made system that has rusted out. "

We tried to fit one once... Did not go very well. And the materials did Not Have a feeling of quality about them.

Thanks for your comments. I visited their web site and they offer a 5 year 50,000 warranty but I'm still on the fence. Not too many alternatives with MB parts NLA.

All the best,

Joe

Hi jhodg5ck:
I just want to get back to you and the rest of the forum regarding my experience with the DEC catalytic converter.Your comment was spot on.

The DEC system posted earlier is completely useless for a 1992 500E. The workmanship and materials are very poor. Welded sections had large amounts of slag, orientation of flanges to connect with header were way off, supplied flanges were cheap and flimsy compared with original equipment and the cats themselves are very lightweight and flimsy.

Fortunately the shop here (Orient Auto in Port Coquitlam) was able to salvage bits of my old system and used the new cats (cut out from the supplied part) and with a lot of fabrication has made a usable exhaust system.

Your comment was spot on!

All the best,

Joe
