Hi guys,
i guess most know that you can use lastvin e.g. to decode your VIN and see which engine etc. it had when leaving production.

My question is: is there any way to get the mating VIN for an engine number?
I recently got my hands on an AMG engine (M104.980) and i want to know in which exact vehicle that engine was.

Maybe just an option via data mining like @WDB748372 ?

Best regards from germany🙂

@AMG34Coupe,
:welgroup:Welcome!:) It nice to see new faces here. I especially like your dog’s smile. It’s one of the best I’ve seen.:thumbsup2:

As far as your AMG Gerry speaks the truth.

BTW: Can you post some pics of your car? And tell us a little more about yourself.

@TerryA Of course! Here are few Pictures of the 300CE 24V 3.4 AMG i am currently restoring.

I made an Instagram Page where i uploaded the whole process of restoring it. Feel free to check it out. @amg3.4coupe

Moreover i have a 300TE as a Daily and a 500SE (126) and 280SE (108) for sunny trips.

@WDB748372 that sounds awesome! 😍

The second 3.4 engine i have has the number: 104980 12 029347

I'm excited which VIN its related to.

Best regards,
Marc

here is the vin WDB1240511B613360
Nice to see code 990 there on the VIN sheet - wondering what happened to that first coupé 24v 3.4 who 'owned' the engine previously..

@AMG34Coupe - would you mind sharing the VIN of the car you are actually restoring? I think I'm already following some of your content on Instagram too!

The 3.4 engine that i bought came with a w201. It was installed there about 15 years ago. So my guess is that the 990 coupe has been damaged in an accident and got scrapped.

The AMG coupe i am currently restoring has the VIN WDB1240511B835327

It has 772 (AMG Bodykit), 773 (Ducktail) and 957 (AMG Engine) codes. 😎

It was build in 1992 and registered until 1998. Then it got stored away. It has seen just 70tkm (44k miles). Will be a pleasure to drive it again.

I am wondering how many of these C124 AMGs were painted in 481 bornite. I dont find any other C124 3.4 AMG online in that colour. Would be even cooler if that colour is kinda rare.

Best regards!

That is a really tough one. Usually the data only flows the other way (VIN -> Data Card -> Engine Number) unless you have access to the internal factory database.

Since you mentioned data mining though, I actually have been messing around with a scraper for Bring a Trailer that pulls all the auction text and comments into an excel or csv file. It is a total long shot, but if that engine was ever mentioned in a listing description (like 'engine swapped with unit #12345') or discussed in the comments of a previous auction, it would be in the dataset. The scraper grabs the full text body, not just the VIN fields.

If you want to post the engine number I can run a quick search on the files I have locally to see if it gets a hit. Or if you want to play with the tool yourself to archive the listings, this is the one I used: Bring A Trailer Auctions Scraper · Apify

Like I said it is a needle in a haystack but since we do not have access to the factory build records searching archived auction text is one of the few 'brute force' ways to try it."

Also, this is my first post so hope I can be helpful!!
