Front Wheel Bearing Part Numbers

If you have any need for stuff from Rock, their Timken prices are lower, although shipping ain't freeeeee:

For the seals: Elring is usually good stuff, ditto for SKF. Rein is likely reboxed OEM and worth a try. DPH would be my last choice.

FWIW, when I purchased SKF in the past few years, one time SKF had reboxed OE CFW in the box with the Star logo ground off; another time SKF had reboxed Elring seals.

While generally a higher price indicates better kwality, $79 octillion per seal seems excessive (link), even more than the $30/ea MSRP of OE. Screenshot below, as I assume they'll fix this eventually.

Yes keep after the DIY! Buying tools etc is a wise investment and no better hands than your own to fettle at the car. My motley fleet would not exist at all if I had to pay shop rates and trust that they could repair it without "swapagnostics" in the first instance.

I am headed off into the land of the unknown. @kiev do you recommend the digital gauge (do you have a link) that you ultimately purchased?

Otherwise, gang, would this gauge work? Note that you can choose between two models - 0.005”/0.01mm and 0.00005”/0.001mm for the same price. Why wouldn’t everyone just buy the latter one? I must be missing something obvious.

As noted earlier, for wheel bearings, I would strongly prefer an analog gauge so you can watch the needle movement. Can't do that with digital. Think of it as a Becker dial gauge.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh. Ok got it, thanks.

I can attest to the above Dave's recommendation: analog gauge is the way to go. My going with a digital gauge turned out to be misarsble - no needle movent sucks big time trying to aim for that 0.02-0.03 mm.

For the front wheel bearings, Timken from Amazon is really inexpensive --- even less today in 2021 than what post #6 shows Autozone selling them at in 2013. :jono: I will get a set from Amazon and see what the country of origin is......

If you have any need for stuff from Rock [RockAuto], their Timken prices are lower, although shipping ain't freeeeee:
For what it is worth, I got Timken Set 12 and Set 17 from Amazon and verified that they are made in the USA. I returned those bearings, bought the same set from Rock Auto, and the Rock Auto set is also made in the USA. 👍

Yep, I've always been satisfied with Timken, and had good luck with them. They are avaialble also at NAPA stores, at least from my experience.

Really? I was unable to find Timkens on NAPA’s website last week ….. 🙁

I got them some years ago for my 560SEC at a NAPA store, when I lived in Texas.

Here's my local NAPA, they seem to carry them (or at least allow you to order them).

Interesting. What I realize now is that TIMKEN SET12 doesn't seem to return anything (which was causing me to write off NAPA) ... but TIMKEN SET17 does return a result...

Bad search engines can make some eCommerce sites unusable.

Rock has SET17 for $6, NAPA is $13 less whatever qpon they're offering...

:seesaw:

These were removed as a cost-reduction effort, as of 10/92 or so:

The suppressor's round barrel just pushes into the hole in the center of the stub axle.

My E500 does not have them; my 1989 560SEC DOES have them.

@gerryvz does your w126 have the weird triangular washer as well? As many 036s do NOT have the triangle washer, I am just wondering if the RF noise suppressor is supposed to work with the washer or if the washer is irrelevant to the function if the RF noise suppressor.

IIRC, the washer was eliminated on the R129/V8 spindles... the washer should be present on all 4/5/6-cyl models of the 124.

The RF suppressor was discontinued separately.

The old bearing on my car that I just removed was Timken which means someone changed it before I acquired the car 5 years ago.
FYI @kiev - The front wheel bearings on my car that I just replaced were made by Timken ENGLAND. I doubt that anyone has replaced the FWBs on my car prior to my ownership, so it is possible that the original part was Timken.
