1991 MERCEDES-BENZ (W124) 300TE ‘3.4 AMG’
KEY FACTS
- This W124-generation Mercedes-Benz 300TE is a rare modern classic estate, equipped with sought-after mechanical and cosmetic AMG upgrades.
- Under the bonnet is a 3.4-litre 24-valve ‘M104’ inline-six, which produces up to 268bhp and drives the rear wheels via the optional five-speed automatic transmission and automatic limited-slip differential (ASD).
- An original UK-delivered car, it was first registered in May 1991. It is recorded on the V5C as having a 3.4-litre engine.
- This seven-owner W124-generation Mercedes-Benz 300 TE ‘3.4 AMG’ estate has been with its current owner for 12 years.
- The odometer displays 151,034 miles from new.
- The W124 3.4 AMG marked the very beginnings of the then forthcoming official Merger between Mercedes-Benz and AMG. Up to this point, the two companies worked independently. The limited 3.4 range was the first project in which AMG and Mercedes worked together to begin to align their processes from production to sales. The seller states that this is the only known UK-delivered estate model to feature these AMG upgrades.
- As with many pre-merger AMG conversions, the seller does not have paperwork on file confirming that this car was upgraded at the Affalterbach facility. However, the engine has been confirmed as a genuine 3.4-litre motor and the seller notes the car has the correct AMG suspension and styling package.
- Enhanced by AMG front and rear bumpers, this W124 300TE’s exterior has a more aggressive visual aesthetic, in line with its enhanced performance over the standard car.
- This example is finished in an attractive Blue Black metallic hue, while inside the cabin features heated Recaro sport front seats, and is trimmed in Mushroom Beige leather with burr wood trim and various AMG badges.
- It rides on a set of 17-inch body-coloured five-spoke AMG alloy wheels, which are shod in a set of Continental SportContact tyres.
- While its appearance is bound to turn heads, this AMG’s true party piece is its engine, which is of the enlarged 3.4-litre capacity (confirmed by the fact that only the AMG head gasket fits around the larger pistons), and features an upgraded crankshaft and camshafts, increasing its output by 40bhp compared to the standard engine.
- From the Mercedes-Benz factory, it was equipped with dual-zone air conditioning and cruise control, headlight washers, electric windows, electrically adjustable door mirrors, a heated rear screen with wiper, an electric tilt and slide sunroof, a double rear roller tonneau cover, and integrated baggage rack.
- It has since been modified to include seven seats, updated from the original five, and has been fitted with a Jenhert sound system, as well as an alarm, immobiliser, and tracker.
- The AMG front shock absorbers have been switched to Bilstein components, with the seller noting this was done to preserve the original items, which are included in the sale.
- Also included in the sale is the original owner’s handbooks, a lever arch file of history, AMG literature, a technical service manual for the 3.4 engine, a genuine plastic boot liner, the spare wheel and tool kit, four sets of keys with two remote alarm fobs, the genuine AMG badges for the body cladding panels, and a selection of spare parts.
- The car’s cherished number plate ‘JAY 11S’ is not included in the sale, it will be reverted back to an appropriate age-related plate in the event of a successful auction.
- The Blue Black metallic paintwork is noted by the seller as being in generally very good condition, having been resprayed to improve the cosmetic appearance. It shows some stone chipping on the front end and slight ‘road rash’ around the lower rear wheel arches, and some other minor blemishes are pictured in the photo gallery.
- Inside, the cabin presents well, with some creasing and signs of use on the leather seats, but no major wear or heavy discolouration present. There is a small crack present on one of the rear seats as shown. The driver controls all present in good order with only light wear present.
- The seller notes that, on occasion, the car displays a light hydraulic ticking tappet sound on cold start, which disappears after a few seconds, and that the heater fan can sometimes squeak for a second or two when it is first switched on. They also note that occasionally there is a slight hesitation when pulling away from a junction with the engine at idle.
- The seller is not aware of any electrical or mechanical faults, save for the points mentioned above.
- The most recent MOT test took place on 19 November 2022 at 150,210 miles, resulting in a first-time pass with no noted advisories.
- The latest service was carried out during November 2022. The work comprised of a brake fluid change, an air conditioning service, and a full inspection.
- Prior to this, the car was serviced in November 2021 which was an engine and oil filter replacement, a transmission service, an air conditioning service and a fuel filter change, and during December 2019 which was an engine oil and filter change, replacement of the differential fluid, an air conditioning service, and a new starter motor.
- The seller has a comprehensive spreadsheet on file documenting the servicing through the 1990s and 2000s, and also a vast list of maintenance and refurbishment work carried out from 2010 onwards. This is shown in the Documents section of the gallery.
