Re: FS: 500E + S600 "not sold separately" - San Francisco

Maybe they are being sold as part if closing an estate?? Like to know more details but the $$$ for buying both is not an option for me.

Re: FS: 500E + S600 "not sold separately" - San Francisco

Yeah, $77k sounds ludicrously high. I was just posting the ad for completeness' sake. Maybe they'll add more photos and information down the road (maybe the cars are encrusted in diamonds?).

Re: FS: 500E + S600C, $77k, "not sold separately" (San Francisco, CA)

Extremely low miles means.... what, under 100k?

Re: FS: 500E + S600C, $77k, "not sold separately" (San Francisco, CA)

Someone that has (or had if it's an estate sale) these two cars in his garage could have been a hardcore collector. I wouldn't be surprised if these are very low mile, beautiful cars. It's a very high asking price but I wouldn't be surprised if someone pays close to it if they are in perfect condition.

I'm guessing the deal where you buy the 500E and get the free S600 has expired? Same phone number as original listing, btw.

:scratchchin:

Looks like the .036 is $75K and the 140 coupe is $58K.

That's got to be a high-water mark (asking price) for a US .036.

And we thought the Classic Center at $50K was pushing the limits.....

The high water mark for a "used" US 036 for sure.

I'm hoping someone can get some pictures of it.

Oh my, imagine the maint. each car needed like yesterday.

Definitely a nice find for the MB collectors.

I don't think you get both cars for that price.

MB ad.
Ken, the original listing from last November indicate both were $77k together:
"Sold together -- NOT SOLD SEPARATELY. $77K"

The current listing is very different, despite the same phone number. Weird.

Well, no wonder they're so expensive...celebrity pedigree? I'm certain Wendy Van Dyke is Richard Van Dyke's daughter, no?

gxsr, I believe you are correct. I came to same conclusion a few minutes earlier. Interesting that a ballerina would drive such a "hot" car, but I'm liking it. I am also guessing that Keith Martin knows her seeing how his early career was in ballet.

Get your Van Ds' in order, already! These cars are offered by the much more expensive "Van Dyck", hence the pricing.

Also, unless it's already been done, count on the 140 V12 needing the complete engine management / CAN box / front vehicle harness replacement. This dwarfs anything that you are already familiar with from your 124 experiences. You know what happens to the upper and lower engine harnesses? Good. That happens to these too, in the exact same manner. Now imagine that disintegration also carrying on through pretty much all of the engine management related wiring going into and out of the CAN box, and even from there into the interior. Just as well, that is best done while replacing the absolutely inevetable evaporator...

I love all 140s, and the 12 cylinders almost beyond my ability to describe. But be warned. Pre- 96 ish, the wiring in these things puts the fright in "fright pig".

Each of these cars is about the right age and mileage to generate a roadworthiness repair tsunami if they are actually placed into almost any kind of use, never mind the current asking prices...

Veddy interesting. I did not know this... glad I'm not a particular fan of 140's (too big for me).

Agreed 100%. However at this mileage (and stratospheric / unprecedented pricetag), I would presume the majority of interest would come from collectors, or other people who prefer to simply "own" the car, rather than actually use it and drive it. I like the "repair tsunami" metaphor... I might borrow that sometime!

Indeed, it's something that can theoretically happen to almost any 140 or 129 in the junk/biodegradable/recyclable/whatever the hell the issue is wiring era. I think it could theoretically happen to some 124s in the same era, though I have never seen it.

On these cars, pretty much all of the engine management related wiring has the same insulation. Obviously the parts mounted directly on the engine suffer the most thermally, hence they are the first, and fortunately often only parts that disintegrate in the known manner. Depending on the use conditions, fan clutch/auxillary fan characteristics, climate, etc. etc., the disintegration can continue deep into the engine management wiring.

The condition is pretty much a given on the V12s, especially if they have spent a lot of time in a hot, humid climate. Most of the ones operated in the summer in places like Florida wound up getting these harnesses replaced under warranty. While I have seen the condition occur on only a couple of V8s, I have seen it on countless V12s.

The most common complaint scenario was this: The car gets a really thorough cleaning, involving some spray under the hood in the firewall area, and/or it gets driven through a car wash, or spends a couple days in the rain. Then it either won't run, or run well as the water infiltrates the disintegrated wiring in the area of the CAN box. The best ones were the infuriated owner calling from the detail shop yelling "These idiots here did something to my car!" Good times, great oldies...

Re: 1992 500E Black / Black 17,000 documented miles

Wow, I'm pretty sure thats the lowest mile example I've seen for sale since I've been a fan of these. I could see someone paying $45-50k for it. What's your guess?

Re: 1992 500E Black / Black 17,000 documented miles

If this is the same car that was in the classified section of the MBCA website, $75K was the asking price.

Re: 1992 500E Black / Black 17,000 documented miles

Mercedesmotoring has a lot of cool cars. I check their site from time to time to drool over some of their classics. It looks like they put a lot of work into their cars before they sell them, but their prices reflect that (and some). The prices usually exceed the top of the market by a good margin. Still, beautiful cars.

Gotta be the same one. Merged threads...

The mileage syncs but the years are off (1992 v 1993) -- could there be 2 unicorns?

Good catch. Given the location, color, and mileage... I'm still thinking it's the same car, and one of the listings has a typo on the year. Anyone have a CarFax account who can get the VIN from the license plate shown in the photo?
