Hello E500EBoard -

First time poster, longtime admirer. I relied heavily on this site (and the previous one) when I bought my '94 E500 15 mo ago.

I live in the Boston area and am going to sell my 1994 E500 - I don't drive it enough to justify keeping it. I will be showing the car in September at a local car museum's Mercedes Day - and was hoping to get some feedback on where this group thinks the car should be priced. Any insight would be much appreciated.

Here is some info on the car's history:
*I am the 3rd owner - I bought it last June from my uncle - who has been the primary owner. This car has always been garaged under his or my care - and for my uncle, this car was always a 4th or 5th car. For me, it has been a 3rd car.

*Here is my best estimate of ownership:
-Owner #1 - bought car in Ohio or Texas - unclear from the carfax in Fall of 1993
-Owner #2 (my uncle) - bought the car in Fall of 1994 w/ 5,822 miles. The car lived the majority of its life in Indianapolis, IN.
-Owner #3 (me) - bought the car in June 2011 w/ 78,678 miles. I live outside of Boston.

*The car has always been maintained at MB dealerships under my, and my uncle's care - with the exception of my most recent oil/filter change - which I did at a local mechanic who I know and trust. (MB of Indianapolis, Mercedes Benz of Boston - Herb Chambers)

*I have driven the car for the last two summers putting approx 3,300 miles on it. The car didn't leave the garage in the winters, and was stored covered.

*Cool facts on this car:
-I have the original window sticker for this car - $82,975
-I have both sets of original keys w/ original key fobs from dealership (Dana Motor Company, Cincinnati) - I believe now called MB of Cincinnati

The car is completely stock and original:
*1994 E500
*VIN WDBEA36EXRC033136
*Engine #: 008194
*Ship Number: 3153
*Black Pearl Metallic (199) w/ Grey Leather (278)
*Just under 82,000

Recent upkeep of note:
*New exhaust system installed Spring 2011 before I took ownership from my uncle. He had the work done by the MB dealership in Indianapolis - but, when I took to my dealer in Boston, they indicated it was an aftermarket. So, I believe the dealer no longer had the part, or wanted to get the part - and went aftermarket. System is fine - there is a slight rattle that requires a slight 'bend' to make it stop.

*4 brand new tires - Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus.

A couple of things that need attention:
*A/C needs to be recharged
*Outside temp wire is loose - so reading in car comes and goes.
*Rear brakes - rear brakes have 25% remaining.
*Rattle from new exhaust needs slight 'bend' to eliminate noise.

So - any insight on where the market is for this car would be greatly appreciated. Also - does the engine or ship numbers tell us anything about the car? (ie it was xx of yyy cars that came across in '94.)

And, of course, if there is anyone interested in the Boston area - let me know and am happy to show the car.

DC

PS This is the only pic I have on this computer - but will upload more later.

How much maintenance has been done? Got the receipts? All the common stuff like upper wiring harness and ETA been replaced?

Pic is a real teaser. Looks great, show us more!

And, of course, welcome to this forum. Too bad you're joining up to say bye ;(

Just a warning that the AC leak could be due to the evaporator... a $2k repair job. You may want to check into chemical sealants like CryoSeal, and fixing that before selling the car, otherwise the price will take a hit. Car sounds nice though, need more pics!

:neeed:

+1 on Dave's comment...

Whenever I see a car for sale and it says "AC needs to be re-charged" I immediatly assume big $$$$ for repairs.

If it just needs a charge, I would charge it and seal it and see if it is ok then.

IMO its just better if you don't have to say "AC system only needs charged".

Sounds like a very nice car, I would like to see more....

....

+2 Why does it need recharging in the first place?? Yes, usually it is more than a recharge ! Owners and especially dealers are quick to say, "oh, it JUST needs a recharge".:banghead:

On a general basis is often the AC-system maintenance neglected or higly overdue. (...don't ask me how I know...) And I don't mean by the owners who's only using it, but it is often neglected by the workshops around. After years it may start leaking gas, especially if the cars are toasted in hot areas on earth. The other is the filter/drier which dries moisture out from the gas. 2 years maximum lifetime on the filter if the AC is used frequently. My 2 cents on the AC stuff.

Great car, latest edition, run and buy! :-)

I will try to post more pics this week -

Sorry for the A/C comment - it was my novice assessment of the fix but will have it checked out by my mechanic (or the buyer's mechanic) before selling.

Did Mike Dorio from NY come look at this car?

He was trying to call me while I was on vacation on a 94', but I couldn't go with him to look at it.

No - the car hasn't been shown yet.

Also - wanted to update the group on more info on the car. I reached out to my uncle (primary owner of the car over its life) to try to get more detail re: maintenance, etc....the car was in a wreck in the late 90's. I didn't know this, but wouldn't have factored into me buying the car anyway - nor would I have known based on drive, look, etc....That said, I think you can tell by the responses so far on this thread, I'm a enthusiast but not really a gear head. So, to the non gear head, the car seems perfect, but it DOES have a history. Here is a direct quote from my uncle re: the wreck:

"The wreck occurred as best I can recall in the late 90's. I was hit in the left rear panel and thrown into a small tree. Extensive sheet metal damage, no damage to frame, suspension or engine. Repaired and painted by our local MB dealer, who did an excellent job."

I promise to try and take and post pictures soon - 3 kids under the age of 6 has conspired to keep me from getting this done so far this week.

Hey everyone - I was finally able to take some pictures and, with the help of Gerry, have them posted in the Owners & Their Cars section. I've also posted the carfax I ran on the car - it starts tracking in '98 @ 40k miles.
