UPDATE: ****************** S O L D !! *********************

Ok Guys - as mentioned earlier, reluctantly, I have decided to sell the car. Not an easy decision after all the praises and graces I've given this car and other fellow owners alike. Without a garage facility to work in, for all that necessary tinkering and protection for the winter months, I feel it deserves to be passed on to another Enthusiast (If at all possible) than let it rot on the street.

The car was first registered February 1994 in Geneva, Switzerland and I am the 3rd owner. It was supplied by MB Garage de Nyon A&S Chevalley SA to its first owner and was serviced and maintained by them till 2004.

April 2004 at 75kkm it was sold by the same dealer to a good friend of mine who resides in Zurich. He paid a squint of SFR25,900 back then! During his ownership it was maintained by a MB specialist 'Guido Thaler AG' in Wintherthur. File of invoices I have ( all in german of course) I can easily scan of course if one would like to see. Just as an example, and in brief, one significant invoice work carried out at 129kkm shows:,

poltergeräusch hinten beheben
stossdampfer ausgeschlagen, ersetzen

Stossdampfer hinten
druckkugel
Stossdampfermontagesatz

Rechnung sfr2'970.95

Last serviced by this Indie was at 162kkm Nov 2009, bill SFR1834.70

February 2010 I acquired the car but basically stayed in storage in Zurich till December 2010 when I drove it back to UK

In my ownership the following work has been carried out:

December 2010
At 167kkm Oil/filter change
Lubricate front dampers
Replace power steering hose from reservoir to pump
Lights converted to left hand traffic
Install side repeaters
Replaced cracked side blinker lamp
MOT check and register for UK use.

March/April 2011 169kkm
Top Engine Harness
Caps/seals/rotors
Transmission oil cooler hoses
Engine oil cooler hose
Washer reservoir, grommets and pumps
Refrigerant sensor, Discharge/recharge a/c

Add-ons and non essentials:
Set of black floor mats
Controller for head unit (porsche CDR22) so it can viewed at any angle, from Becker auto sound NJ

December 2011, Routine service 175kkm
Engine oil flushed , change filter, renew oil Mobil 1 5w40
air filter
cabin filter
fuel filter
Flush coolant twice (drain radiator and both sides of crank case), renew thermostat, top hose, fill with MB coolant mix distilled water
Replace steering damper
Replace idler arm
Replace ambient temp (installed used one)
MOT Uk inspection

February 2012, 176kkm
Reseal cam magnet and front cover passenger side with MB sealant
cam stretch bolt and seal ring passenger side
renew valve cover gaskets
New oil level sender unit and pressure switch
sump gasket
oil filter housing gasket
oil filter and seal
new poly belt
New tensioner/adjuster
New alternator bearings
Renew oil mobil 1 5w 40
New expansion coolant tank
New anti roll bar bushes
Replaced EZL (second hand)
Install 2phast special auto dimming mirror

While underneath bottom harness was checked and surprisingly still intact

The car is pretty much original apart from FGS, mid resonator delete, Cool harness, Viktor steering wheel and a Porsche CDR22 head unit/ipod connect with Blaupunkt Thb 200A subwoofer. 2 sets of wheels, stock 16" eight holes on winters and Polished Evo II on Bridgestone Potenzas (50% tread). Also, a original 3rd break light is fitted which is rare on Euro models. Current mileage is 175,200km(109500miles). I have all three original infrared remote keys, owners manual, documents and 2 X MB floor mats.

Mechanically, no running issues. A typical weep from p/s pump is slightly present but not enough for me to ever have to top up the fluid. Steering box is bone dry which was last checked when idler arm bushes were replaced. Brake pads are at 50%, rotors no deep lip and vibration. ATF is due a change at 180kkm, which I'm happy to get done for the right buyer.

Bodywork and interior: Now I know what you're thinking, "being a swiss car it's gotta have rust!". But , I myself is very surprised that it has zero rust! Some fair wear & tear such as typical stonechips on the hood and bumper scuffs. Inside is 9 out 10, rear seats are hardly used, zero wear on passenger front seat, driver seat typical slight wear on bolster but not enough to warrant a refurb yet IMO. Hedliner totally unmarked and carpets regularly shampooed. PITA this beige interior but it keeps me on top of things as it shows when dirty and I'm very much a stickler when it comes to the interior. Yes, I'm the type who carry a small paint brush to rid off that dust in nooks and crannies.

Not really sure what to ask for and I hate to put a price on her, so any suggestion is welcome or an offer for that matter. It's not on the market yet but I thought i'd give members first refusal, or at best what you think is a fair price?? Perhaps in the region of £12k ?

I hope this brief history demonstrates how I did my best to look after such a legendary machine. Please feel free to ask any questions and give advise.

Many thanks, guys!

A really nice car you have there Bing...one of my favorite color combos.

It'll be fine being stored outside. You won't let it 'rot'.

Thanks Jimbo! In fact I was just thinking to start a new thread on "how many owners here leave their pride and joy outside their homes" especially in such metropolis like LONDON.

Well, it's in safe keeping at the moment in my friends underground garage. Have yet to actually place it in the classifieds, and since I'm in no hurry, I'll rely on word of mouth for the moment. When it gets quiet work wise I may try then, so I may entertain potential buyers and the "average Joe" who goes around kickin tires.

Interesting though, I just did a quick scan of all the 1994s for sale that are/were posted here and ,just based on asking price alone, it showed an average of $13-$14k. In Europe, on Mobile.de, good examples pre 1994s alone are in the region of €20k ! Of course there are other factors that drive these asking prices, but more or less a rough idea to note.

More work done for the potential new owner::banghead:

Left/driver side cam magnet and front covers resealed, valve cover gasket.
P/S fluid housing gasket (short hose to pump intact as replaced in dec 2010)
P/S pump checked and bone dry (surprising as I thought this was source of leak on this side but turns out cam magnet and cover) Yes, as Dave says source of leak is not always where you think!
ATF /filter/gasket changed
Rear inner Trunk Trim panel replaced (documented once by Derfuror, nice cheap item and makes it look new)
Replaced driver side kick plate/trim as chrome strips were pealing.

Bing - lovely car. I am also London based. Can you let me know who/where you get your car looked after by please.

Thanks

Thanks Bing, that's convenient.

No, I do not have one at the moment. The 500E is one of those remaining cars from my childhood that I need to get out of my system! I have been in to W124's from a very young age, I went with my dad to collect his brand new W124 230E from the Merc factory back in 1986 and my fondness for the model has never declined. I run a 300CE at the moment for a bit of a laugh, bought it off eBay very cheap rather than see it scrapped!

My hunt begins now for a 500E, I may need to buy from the continent in the end as there do not appear to be any black cars for sale in the UK. I would have snapped yours up otherwise.....!

Thanks guys! At least it's gone to a good home - my indy mechanic, which is probably worse emotionally since I'll be seeing a lot of it. All it took was for him go flat out on the highway a couple of times.:driving:

Thanks for the insight, and in the meantime, I'll stick around to contribute my ownership experience and join the banter every now and then.

:cheers1:

Congratulations! (though visits to your indy will be somewhat bittersweet now!)

What's next?

Traitor.
Just kidding, glad you managed to get it to a nice new home. Relieved now that you've got this issue of your chest?

What's next?

Not sure yet. I'm thinking about a W140 S600L for my roadtrips.

More of a frustration than an issue, JB. If I could have used it daily I would have kept it. Just couldn't let it sit on the street for days.
