Fuel Pump

Yes, replacing the pumps is common, they tend to wear out after 30 years. The pumps are located underneath the car ahead of the right side rear wheel. Most 124's have dual pumps, except very late production cars which have a single pump and completely different pump / filter / hoses / etc.

I don't think there is a "HOW TO" writeup on this, but search the forum, it's been covered in other threads. Details on all the hoses are in this thread.

After washing my engine bay and blowing a coil, waiting a week to replace the coil I was greeted by a smooth running car and a leaky pump. In my case it was the fuel pump itself that started leaking. I just wanted to mention that its important to isolate the leak, which can take some time and get messy.

I agree that 30 years is a good time to grab a spare "just in case" irrespective of mileage. Which is why I did so even though my car doesn't need it and is around the 90k mark.

is it a good idea to change the fuel pumps at 125000 miles whether they need it or not?

Yup, the pumps have issues with the big O-ring between body/shell and the end cap, due to age (not miles). I've had to replace a number of pumps that were still functional, but leaking from this O-ring, which is not replaceable. I've had to replace the fuel pumps on almost every 124 that I've owned.
