Don't bend the rods on the back of the badge - you risk breaking the welds.
I've done these on a number of different models, W124 included, and I just mount them with the supplied nylon or plastic "shields" as well as using stainless fender washers on the back side. Be sure to use some anti-seize on the threads in the event you want to take it off. I also use a small bolt cutter to cut the excess off the bolts after mounting.
I have them on my cars that qualify. I've also got a pile of the certificates that come with them, too. I noticed that a couple of years ago they're less personalized than they used to be.
The problem with these badges (per the photo above) is that they are very low quality and after a year or two tend to fade and then the blue and white chips off. Sad. I believe MB will replace them if you ask them to, though.
I got one of the "old school" 250,000km badges off of eBay that MBNA used to provide, which are true grill badges that offer durabilty and longevity, and put that on my 560SEC many years ago, after the MBUSA piece of crap faded and then fell apart.
