How can I check the code reader itself?

I bought a code reader from a reputable ebay seller (Porscheapriliafan) a fair while back and finally got around to trying it as I have a heat soak, won't idle situation developing. I tried to pull codes just now, but got absolutely no flashes on the code reader at all, not a blip. Is there a way to check if the code reader is working? I'm afraid of connecting it directly to 12V and not sure which leads to try if I do. For this reader he has ground to a green wire, 12V to the white wire, and the wire to try the pins with is black.

Rgds,
Chris

That's a bizarre way to use wire colors. I think either the instructions are wrong or it was built incorrectly. As a first step, try reversing the green and white wires...that shouldn't cause any harm, assuming the reader is ok. If that doesn't work, then I'd try the following: black to negative, white to positive and green to pin being checked. Are you pulling pos and neg from the 38-pin connector or from somewhere else?

I was pulling +/- from pins 1 and 3 of the 38 pin connector. His instructions are explicit as far as green to pin 1 and white to pin 3. Apart from that and the black lead to the pins, the instructions are the same as the on the "impulse counter" pdf from this site.

Also make sure you are using the correct pins. It's easy to plug into the wrong place as the connector does NOT have a good identifier for pin 1/2/3, etc. That's why the breakout box is, IMO, worth the expense...

Here's s dumb question. Codes are to be checked with the ignition on. Does this mean that the key is all the way clockwise just short of engaging the starter? All trouble lights lit and ETA humming? Or is it the notch before this?

Rgds,
