Once again, MB is the featured marque with 2 driving legends and the fabled #722 in attendance. Come and meet Moss and Mass as they visit the MB area around noon. We invite all the local MBCA chapters and each year the folks and MBs get greater in number. We are hoping for over a 100 MBs, not including the score that get into the judged concours. Of course, any MB and person is welcome to park with us regardless if you are in the MBCA or not.

Mille Miglia-winning 300 SLR Mercedes to star at Historic Festival Sept. 3-7

LAKEVILLE, Conn. (March 3, 2015) – Murray Smith, chairman of Lime Rock Park’s Labor Day Weekend historic festival, today announced that Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the factory will send to Connecticut’s Northwest Corner “722,” the 300 SLR sports car with which Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson stormed to victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia. Also coming from the factory collection will be a W196 Formula One Grand Prix car of the type that Juan Manuel Fangio and Moss finished first and second in the world championship the same year.

On hand to drive the cars at Lime Rock will be Sir Stirling himself as well as Mercedes Classic official driver Jochen Mass, who of course won the 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans in the Sauber Mercedes C9, in addition to being the winningest driver of the Group C era. Jochen’s C.V. includes a Formula One victory for McLaren and a win at the 1987 Sebring 12 Hours, teamed with Bobby Rahal in the Bayside Porsche 962.

Smith said, “Stirling’s drive to victory in the Mille Miglia is one of the outstanding sporting feats of the 20th century… right up there with Roger Bannister's sub-4-minute mile and Jean-Claude Killy’s three gold medals in the 1968 Grenoble Winter Olympics.

“It is probably the single greatest drive of all time in motorsports.”

Smith continued, “We are delighted that Mercedes have honored us with this gesture. We are planning to reciprocate by underlining the three pointed star's outstanding sporting and engineering legacy as we organize a truly great display of the company's cars from the last 10 decades.”

This exemplary gathering of Mercedes-Benz machinery will stand-out at Historic Festival 33 even as the grounds are graced with 280 vintage and historic cars in nine racing groups Friday, Saturday and Monday, and on Sunday when more than 900 vehicles of the highest calibre are on display for the Sunday in the Park Concours d' Elegance (220 vehicles) and its concomitant Gathering of the Marques (700+).

About the Historic Festival Since 1983, the East Coast's premier vintage racing and concours event has been the Historic Festival at Lime Rock Park, held annually over Labor Day weekend. No other venue in the U.S. has three days of on-track racing sandwiching a prestigious concours event – all on the same property, all at the same time. Historic Festival 33 is Thursday, September 3 (17-mile Vintage Race Car Parade) through Monday, September 7, while the Sunday in the Park Concours d’ Elegance & Gathering of the Marques is September 6. Historic Festival 33 features Honored Guests Sir Stirling Moss and Jochen Mass, and one of the most distinctive gatherings of Mercedes-Benz cars in recent memory. Schedule: Thursday, Vintage Race Car Parade; Friday, Practice & Qualifying; Saturday, 18 races and demonstration laps; Sunday in the Park Concours; Monday, 18 races and demonstration laps.

That is cool.

Ron has, what I believe to be, an original painting of the 300 SLR sports car with with Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson storming to victory at the 1955 Mille Miglia.

Wow, I would love to see a pic of that , if possible !

Ron , bring it and have the old dodger sign it LOL ....

Just wondering if anyone is coming to join us....the 94' Limited car will be there, mine, and a few other 500Es from the CT area.

We expect about 75+ Benzs in total...not including the Gullwing Group cars (they may or may not park with us) and the Concorse MBs that will be in the judged show.

There is a chance I might make it up. My 3.6 wagon won't be making the trip though. The engine/trans are in the process of being reinstalled back in the car.

I'm going to head up, Jimbo what days are you going or what days do you think would be best for the 500 group normally I'm not a Sunday car show kinda guy but if that's the day everyone is heading up.

Sunday for me, although I gots me a weekend pass from Fred Jackson, one of the organizers. Not sure what I have going on for Saturday and I usually never go on Mondays....anyway.

If you come Sunday Jeff, I'll have your fire extinguisher if you still want to trade for it. They want us there by 10 for line up. We are slated to park on the front straight this year...right before the concorse cars.

Huge 2002 gathering always too...have your lady friend drive one up ! I'm only bringing the 500E this year though...my wife and kids aren't into it.

Hi

I'm sure I'll make it up on Sat and Sun. I think Alex is heading up also ,but not sure what days. Right now I'm keeping the spacers, but if you want to sell the extinguisher and misc. I'll give you $$. I'm not taking up the 2002 just the 500e I don't trust my lady friend to drive either one. :gsxrlove:

My cell is 203-788-8635 if anyone plans on making it up to the road racing center of the east tomorrow or Sun.

Awesome weekend ! Always a treat to see the old Silver arrows race, well, a treat anyway to see them in the flesh.

Over 150 MBs for the Sunday show...and the Gullwing Group didn't even show up. 8-(

I was the lone .036...again. Sorry I missed whoever made it up. I didn't check here to get everyone's cell #s. My bad.

Pix coming....

Some of the 1000+ cars on Sunday....

It still amazes me how much the ole 500E draws attention...or maybe it was that I was giving out cold biers(?) That white BS, not so much.

But the white GTS had throngs of people around it most of the day. Cool car...sounds even better than it looks too. And a bargain at 130K (IMO).

These wheels look great! I like how they fill out to the flared out fenders. What type and size are they?

Those are AMG 2-pc wheels, 18x8.5 ET25 front, 18x10 ET25 rear. They are gorgeous on the 036... but are expensive and difficult to locate, even more difficult to find a set that does not require repair. Click here for more info.

Just read that thread--wow! There's always a cost for beauty, and I think I'll admire those wheels on other's cars!

Jimbo,

Thanks for the great photos. Especially the "Silver Arrows" and that handsome E500E.

Take Care
