If not chip tuning, how to bypass Cold Start Upshift Delay and Top Speed Limiter?

Hello,

I've done a lot of reading and found out that installing a "performance" chip (EPROM?) is not going to yield any extra power, but does come with benefits such as bypass of the cold start upshift delay, and removes the top speed limiter (which I also know is not really that helpful, due to the top speed being limited mechanically by the gear ratios).

That said, I've done some looking around, and I can't even find a single vendor selling the chips for our cars. Are they still available anywhere, and would they be a "plug and play" chip, allowing me to swap back to the stock chip with ease?

Also, if not for a chip, then how are people getting around to bypassing the cold start upshift delay, as well as the top speed limiter?

Thank you all for being so patient with my newbie questions, and I'm very eager to learn. :)

Cheers

Lynch,

You can plug the vacuum line with a bb to the trans 1st gear upshift control. Not a big deal.

???"which I also know is not really that helpful, due to the top speed being limited mechanically by the gear ratios"? I think the 500e is power/drag limited and not gear ratio. You cannot hit 6200 it top gear. You can modify the car w a 2.65 or 2.24 rear end ratio if you like for not much money.

No free power without spending some major bucks or efforts. 6.0 liter conversions are sweeeet, but that's probably doubling your investment. Antique car- fix it up and drive it.

AFAIK, the modified chip is the only way to eliminate the cold upshift delay without triggering a CEL (plugging the vac line with BB will cause a CEL). Eliminating the top speed governor can be done via other methods but it's far more work and expense (search for "vmax" box), the EPROM is the preferred method to go beyond 155mph/260kph.

The 500E is gearing/RPM limited with stock 2.82 gears at 162-164mph or so. Rumor is it will hit 170-something with taller gears installed. I'm not sure if a stock 5L motor can hit the rev limiter with 2.65 gears (low 170's), pretty sure it will run out of power around 170-ish... tuners have claimed 180+ with 6L engines and taller gears, but that's a different discussion.

Kevin, I can supply the modified chip with the '92 LH module for a few bucks extra if you're interested, along with the stock chip. Yes, you can swap the chip fairly easily but there's no need to. I use the modified chip in all my cars. A side benefit is slightly increased RPM limit, which is raised to 6600rpm, and it's a bit softer rev limit too.

The modified chip is still sold on eBay but the price has more than doubled, it used to be $40-$50 and now the same seller wants almost $110 - crazy. And he's still claiming ridiculous 10-15% power gains which are entirely fictitious.

Hi gsxr (Panigale myself), wondering if you still have a chip available?...like to chip my '92. can drop my an email at johnnymoezzi@icloud.com
Email sent - please let me know if you don't receive it. :)

I sold my GSX-R long ago, which was a mistake... got a nice 2000.5 Mille RSV-R to replace it, eventually sold that as I never had time to ride it. I'm currently bikeless but am really tempted by the S1000RR. Maybe someday... still no time to ride.

UPDATE: Anyone interested in the performance chip, more details are here: http://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9190

Dear all,

Does anyone has a chip avail for my '92 500E?
How much do they go for?
Are they sold seperately or mine has to be present to modify the existing one?
Is it easy to install it for us who don't have experience in working on cars to much?
Or it has to be installed by a certified personel?

Thank you and kind regards,

Eno
