Ignition coils, the new sparkplugs

Hi everyone,

Of all the parts that have deteriorated in quality in newer M-Bs; the ignition coils are some of the most common failures, and their symptoms deviate from previous generations of Engines.
Just today, one of our club members (just bought a certified 2 years old C63S) had a check engine light in his first attempt at a spirited drive. The fault code just showed a misfire in one cylinder, and the workshop could not reproduce the fault nor see it on the live data. A good old coil swap shifted the misfire to another cylinder and the shop determined it was the $300 "delf" brand coil which is only available through M-B.

It seems that ignition coils are the new sparkplugs ($1200 a set instead of $100 is definitely more lucrative) , they fail at less than 80Kkm even on stock cars. It would be a good idea if M-B adds them to the service items instead of having them fail one after another at inconvenient times.
