Folks,

Given that we now have a source in Germany for the center hood foam piece, as well as the two edge pieces that fit to the corners of the hood, I am thinking it might be a good idea to pursue a Group Buy for these three pieces as a "kit" for folks who need to refurbish these items, or have a set of spares (if you are a long-term owner, or have multiple W124s).

The pieces I am talking about are shown in this diagram:

#86 ("L" shape edge plastic pieces, left and right sides) in below diagram:

#17 (center foam piece) in below diagram:

Please reply if you would be interested in pursuing sets of these three items, or just simply the center foam piece. We will work with @Mbzclassicparts to get a discounted deal based on volume + "kit" of three parts.

Thanks
Gerry

Good Idea. I bought those new just before NLA status when I got the car. So for me, it would depend on cost breakdown. Throw in the under-headlight foam support and that may be a better value-add for me - attention grabber

I really don’t know the condition of mine at the moment but will check them out. Depending on what I find I might be interested depending on the cost.

As an FYI, the left & right L-shaped rubber pieces are unique to V8 models. The location of the rubber strip which touches the upper radiator support is in a different position on non-V8 models.

The original, correct pieces are:

124-880-03-97 - Left
124-880-04-97 - Right

Yes, I am aware that the EPC shows a different, superceded part number for the right side (A1248892198) and that 124-880-04-97 does not appear anywhere in newer/current EPC versions. I'm also aware that the superceded number shows for a bunch of 6-cyl models. But the early 034/036 did not come from the factory with the #21 seal, and the later seal piece was apparently phased into production sometime around November 1993. I have a 10/1993 build car with the early seal, and a 12/1993 build car with the late seal.

The late piece (#21) has a hard outer "wing" that feels like plastic, and this outer wing is often broken off completely. The early seals (03 and 04) have soft rubber outer "wings". Also, the late seal (#21) has NO part number embossed on it that is visible with the seal installed on a hood. I haven't removed one to see if the part number faces the hood sheet metal.

Point being, it would be nice to verify which specific part number is being reproduced, and if the reproduction will have soft rubber outer "wings" like the original 03/04 seals.

I would like to order a set as well, if it's not too late to get on the list. I've been looking for these for a long time.

Did a member on the 126board not buy a window seal for his SEC a while back fromMBZ classic parts
and it wasnt very good ?
Might be worth one member being brave enough to take the possible hit first before everyone jumps in

I believe a number of folks here on the forum have purchased these leading edge parts and have been happy with them. I also have one here in my hand and though it is a different material than the OE piece, it looks very functional and is of good quality. I would not hesitate to use it on my own car, if and when that time comes (I installed a new factory piece about 10 years ago, which is still in excellent condition).

Thats great if you have seen and examined the part . I wouldnt think for a second that you would want anything
on your car or recomend it to others if it was below par.
What a shame the SEC seals were not so good I would have bought a set of those ,third party items are a real lottery
and fair play to the people who make the first purchess then report back.
Its a shame that they can get some things right and others below par
I hope you were not offended Gerry I know you put a lot of work in on both the boards and I would not have wanted to
detract or put people off from the group buy

AFAICT, the edge pieces are reproductions of 124-889-19-98 and 124-889-20-98 which are for 6-cyl models:
