Is my transmission about to quit on me..?

Hi guys,

Any feed back on what happened today is appreciated.. I went through the transmission service manuals and trouble shooting manuals but found nothin similar to this issue.. Problem has not re-occured, yet..

As I was waiting on a Red light today, I felt the transmission disengage by itself. As soon as the light turned I pushed the gas, the revvs would pass over 3K but the car moved as if it were being pushed. I was able to go into a large parking area on my side. Slowly I creeped in. I found a spot and stopped the car. I toggled with the shifter, reverse engages, 1st and 2nd also engaged. I was able to get back on the road in 2nd. then I shifted to D and all worked as if nothing had happened..? Are these signs that some more parts are about to go on my huckleberry.. vacuum leak, bad solenoid, clutch,


(Idle is a little higher now that I replaced the MAS. It will be at about 900 rpm when in P, and drops to 500 when the gears engaged.. I don't think this matters though)

Last time(s) I experienced similar symptoms, the fluid level was low. Make sure the fluid level is at the "Max" mark when the tranny is HOT (not cool, not warm, HOT). That means driving 15-20 minutes at freeway speeds, then check while parked on a level surface with the engine running, shift lever in Park. Don't overfill! It takes maybe a pint (~16oz) to go from Min to Max. Use Dexron II or III fluid, avoid the newer Dexron VI spec fluids (they are thinner and can cause flaring or other issues).

Same question as Jono... when was the last tranny service, and did they drain the converter to get all the old ATF out? Should be done at least every 30kmi, possibly more often if you don't use synthetic ATF.

As far the service.. I changed the fluid and filter about 500 miles ago. Did not get to the torque converter. Now serviced, as in flushed and readjusted..got no clue.. I imagine the previous owner didn't even think about that.. I changed the ATF as a preventive maint. I want to schedule this at the dealer.. I figure they know their way around it better than the guys at Wedge Keyez. Is there anything in particular I should ask the stealer to do..

I will check the level tomorrow, but unless it recently developed a leak I don't know about, ATF is all the way up..

There is a mention in the diag manual about a similar symptom. It mentions the fuel pump relay along with the kickdown solenoid. I did loose kickdown not long ago. Tomorrow I will install a new switch I got in today. My question, how can the fuel pump relay have any relationship with the tranny..?

Well, if the transmission had Never been serviced it Might be dead... On occasion neglected transmissions puke once some attention is paid, odd, but I've had it happen to me once and I've heard Numerous stories attesting to as much.

I will make it a point to have it serviced before it goes bezerk. That is what I thought about the Fuel Pump relay, yet there is mention of it in the trans. diag. manual..? Don't get why the fuel pump relay would be connected to the solenoid..?

I've seen/experienced the defective kick down switch a few times, but never a faulty FPR cause a lack of upshifting.

Yeah, that part (FPR) also baffles me, I did replace the kickdown switch today and noticed improve downshifting, but the engine almost always struggles at 4200 rpm and begins to miss afterwards, (viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1142),.. Anyhow, I drove all day with no issues.., but regardless, I think I owe it to the tranny to get its service done..
