Clean and black, inside & out, the legendary Benz/Porsche collaboration produced a specially built limited edition vehicle. This much praised elegant four-door sedan with its bucket seats, sun roof, excellent sound system, tinted rear windows with a roll-up shade, conceals an 8-cylinder, 4-cam shaft, 32-valve engine that takes you from 0-60 mph in 6 seconds, top speed 155 mph--a hot-rod (when you need it) by any definition. But it whispers quietly when idling or driving in town, and surges with a mean growl when you really step on it.

Stop by any Benz shop and the reaction is "Ohh, you got one of these." A moderate press on the accelerator and your reaction will probably be "Wooah"! Press a little harder and you need a neck brace. After all the intervening years and 233,716 miles this $80,000 (when new) vehicle is still amazing.

Hate to lose it! Call: 510-323-2928 or (Cell: 510-227-5772) to arrange a viewing and test drive at the Benz/Rolls Royce shop in Albany where the car has been tuned up. The 500E is insured. It is registered until 11/08/2012. The VIN Number is # WDBEA36E2NB806116

Congratz on the car

As Dave said the head lights are standard Euro 124 lights, not Euro 500E lights.

Ahh okay, time to source some hellas :(

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Black, 234kmi, $11,900 (El Cerrito, CA)

To carify Dave's statement.

320/420 e's had the inner light being a fog light. On a 500e, they have the fogs in the bumper, so the H3 has a different relfector/lens which is a driving light. The 500e is recognizable by the glass lens area is reflective, and not grey.

recent threads show the correct RHS(?) assy is NLA. List is ~500 euro/each.

I think that's correct,

Michael

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Black, 234kmi, $11,900 (El Cerrito, CA)

The previous posts are correct. If you want 500E Euro lights, you'll need to buy E500 Euro lights and also 500E Euro lenses to "build" a set. The left side 500E Euro light just went NLA, which is causing a bit of a problem. You would have to buy from Europe, total cost will end up around $1k USD at current exchange rates (which are very favorable for US buyers). Details are in this thread.

The lights themselves, all I have to do is install bulbs right? And they have the turn signals on them? Sorry for all the questions, I'm still learning lol

Ohh I need lamps + lenses, d'oh. Do you know where to source the lamps? What is the price for both?

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Black, 234kmi, $11,900 (El Cerrito, CA)

If you want proper 500E Euro lights... right now you'd have to buy E500 lamp assemblies, plus 500E lenses, swap the lenses, and you'd end up with an extra set of E500 lenses that you could re-sell. The Euro lights will probably NOT come with turn signal lenses. Yes you will need to buy bulbs (H4 main, H3 inner). Again, this has to be ordered and shipped from Germany, the items are blocked for sale by US dealers.

Good Euro source: http://speed-autoteile.com/index.php?modul=contact
Price will be right around $1000 USD including shipping for everything. Someone recently got a quote...

You can re-sell the leftover E500 lenses afterwards, which will recoup a couple hundred bucks of your expenditure.

I did not know the left side light were NLA. Glad I bought mine when I did.

Would he also need to rewire the plugs or do you think the lights he has are wired correctly for the 500E euro's?

The turn signal lamps are seperate from the main assembly? Or would I just need the lenses for them?

Good question. They are probably re-wired already, but that should be double-checked.

Yes - they are a separate item. The turn signal lenses come with USA lights, but to my knowledge they do not come with Euro light assemblies. The turn signals are available in USA if needed (fairly cheap used or aftermarket).

Gotcha, so I'm looking at euro assemblies + euro lenses + euro turn signal assemblies. Should euro tail lights be added too or is there no difference?

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Black, 234kmi, $11,900 (El Cerrito, CA)

I prefer the euro front turn signals due their darker color. Some people like clear turn signals.

All the turn signals (front/rear) are optional, and strictly a personal preference. Euro tails are quite similar to 94-95 US tails, btw.

Any chance anyone could tell me something about the history of this car? I tried PMing gerry but no response. Gonna run carfax if nothing turns up here

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Black, 234kmi, $11,900 (El Cerrito, CA)

AutoCheck attached - you'd need to see if Gerry has any additional info. If the car was not listed for sale in the past ~10 years, he might not have any other data.

Gerry- this is a pic of the Vin

There are more pictures in that other thread. I do wonder how it ended up there- it doesn't appear to have accident damage.....

Re: 500E in Cali JY

VIN# WDBEA36E2NB806116 in 2nd pic. Car was hit in left rear. Probably totaled by insurance.

Not much left but engine & trans that that I can see. Chassis is probably better than Arkady's E60 find.

Re: 500E in Cali JY

I have detailed records of this car in my personal database, dating back from January, 2011.

At that time, the car was located in Costa Mesa, CA and had 228,431 miles on the odometer. The car was listed for sale on Autotrader.com.

My personal notes at that time, for this care, are as follows:

"Seller Star European in Costa Mesa, CA. Listed on both web site and Autotrader.com. Asking $12,990. Little definite info on the car: "This Is A Two Owner Car That Was Very Well Cared For." GVZ assessment: Typical rock chips and scrapes on front and front spoiler. Chromed stock wheels, tinted windows, Mercedes sticker peeling from corner on windshield, some sort of cheesy steering wheel cover; front wipers missing (panels replaced with blank panels); non-500E headlights; clear front blinkers; rear emblem removed from trunk lid; top of rear seat leather coming apart (separating); paint dented and chipped at edges of doors and trunk panels; dealer-style cupholder on driver's door; door stop on driver's door replaced; evidence (red light) of alarm installation; significant driver's side seat bolster wear and stitching fraying; cracked and faded center console wood; both rear doors have broken dealer-style cupholders on them; faded-cracked wood between rear seats; front passenger side door has broken dealer-style cupholder mounted on it; front passenger door has typical door pocket peeling; later-model MB Becker stereo; some sort of dual red lights mounted in cluster on sides of speedo; foam intake air tubes peeling-shredding; windshield wiper cap missing; plastic retainers for headlights on radiator support missing; This is a rough car."

Further comments from someone who saw the car up close & personal:

Comments from 500Espot user Swim Wagon: "I just wanted to put this out there, as I feel history and lineage is key to these specialty cars.

'92 500E with 228K on ODO. I saw this one pop up in San Diego by the second owner on sitemash.com last week for $6500. Fair condition given the mileage.

Same car for sale this week by dealer in Costa Mesa for $12990  Probably minus the pads and rotors that were in boxes packed in the trunk."

Comments from GSXR on 500Espot: "The Euro headlights are wrong, they are the standard 124 lights, not 500E lights; wipers missing too. Power steering cooling loop is mangled. All decals from the upper radiator support are missing. Washer bottle cap missing. Looks like it was in a front-end wreck and repaired poorly, or at least sloppy. Probably not a bad deal at $5-6k, but $13k is a joke, IMO. Wow."

My last comments, dating from May, 2011:

UPDATE 5-15-2011: Car listed on AutoTrader.com for $6,990 with same mileage. Looks like a good parts car given history.

GSXR edit Sept-2017: Photos attached below are from this BW thread showing the car in a junkyard.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Unknown mileage Wrecked in Junkyard (Richmond, CA)

Not quite sure why, but this link is displaying a Mercedes Maybach 750 bhp electric convertible!
Dude....it's Benzworld. Leave it at that.

The thread is just a few inane/banal comments from the typical Banzworld crew. Nothing of any import or value-add.

I added the photos here for posterity, as well as information from my detailed database. It's all I can really do at this point. And put the thread in the "FOR SALE" sub-forum as it's not really an "Off-Topic" topic, if you know what I mean.

Cheers,
Gerry

I also merged this with existing thread.

Looks like this car was [previously] owned by our forum member, ".Zo" ?!?

Link fixed in earlier post.

Those rear bumper filler panels are gold... sad that some muppet cut off the rear fender flares in such a way that they are basically useless.

:runexe:

...the before & after pics...

It hurts to see one of these grand vehicles relegated to such a sad state of demise...& It had one of those neat M-B head units, too :-(

Yet, It still can provide quite a few valuable parts for a savvy picker.

Blasfemi! That's not a way to treat, even a donor, wonder where they are sitting now? So one more down, once again, how many do we
have, standing theire ground?

Soooo,

Who is close enough to Richmond to collect the corpse REMOVE it's gold teeth, heart and kidneys and bury the carcass?

The Undertaker, comes to mind! Remember watching the WWF with my two boys, a looong time ago....

Oh yeah, forgot Pall Bearer, R*I*P

Has anyone contacted ".Zo" to find out WTH happened to this car, and why it ended up in a wrecking yard?

...Car was hit in left rear. Probably totaled by insurance.

In the junkyard pic showing the left rear fender flare cutout, you can see a hint of the 'accordioning' of the upper fender along the trunkline from an angled rear end collision. In the back seat pic, the rear parcel shelf also appears to display blunt trauma distortion.

So Sad :124fast:

Holy Crap! It looks like that cool M-B radio is just setting on the console waiting for some new love...:hearts:

The car arrived at the yard with no damage- see pic below. The damage has occurred whilst it was in the yard. Possibly by a forklift or something shunting it around the yard.....

Joe,

Where did you come up with that pic? To know it arrived intact and not all bent up IS EVEN MORE DEPRESSING.

This is presents a whole new question about how it met it's demise.

What a Shame.:runexe:

Hi Terry - that pic was posted in the BW thread. It was when the car was taken in by the yard. It begs the question - how did it get damaged in the yard & why was it even there in the first place.....

Wow, that DOES make it all the worse. Perhaps .Zo had an ownership experience similar to my pal BMW Guy & finally said, "Enough. Just take it away"?

... and It still had the license plate attached... :wtf:

Funny because Captruff and some of the usual suspects went to a car show Saturday at the MB VPC center in Long Beach. Some outfit brought a 124 Cabriolet that they had installed 500E fenders on (both front and rear) and it looked REALLY good. It's a shame that you know that those came from the carcass of a 500E somewhere but at least they went to good use. In this case Stevie Wonder could have done a better job cutting out the rear's on this one.

I sent ".Zo" a PM yesterday to see what was up.

It looks like he has logged into the site in recent weeks, so hopefully he's not lost to us forever and can help out with what happened.

Just saw a video of it on instagram @mercedesbenzchr .. being rolled over by a G-class!
These people are sick!

Yep that is it, you can tell but the cut's on the rear quarter panels. Obviously the same numbnut got their hands on the fronts too electing to cut those out as well instead of just removing the entire fender!!!

Words fail me. Did they think it was a 260E?

Brilliant! They turned four fenders probably worth $1500+ into slivers of curved metal worth maybe $50. Totally ruined all four and walked away with worthless junk.

:mushroom1:

I've never been to a pick-n-pull.
Do they just let whomever do whatever without any supervision?
What a business model - yeah, I own it but you can just go ruin the value if you feel like it...

Its because 95% of cars at pick n pull have no values and all cars they get for scrap value. Then they sell it for scrap. Win win

I don't think it's the same car. The Pick-n-pull car had chrome 8-holers and the RR tail lamp was still present even though the rest was mostly picked over.
