Hello gents,

anyone replace their halogen bulbs with LED bulbs?

Does it work well and not disturb on-coming cars that may think you got High beams on?

thank you.

i did these (Auxito LED H4 bulbs) per the recommendations and they looked for good me!

The LED technology is improving steadily. There are still issues with size, color / temperature, and pattern... but the output can be pretty impressive vs stock halogens.

HOWEVER, as discussed in the thread @duuder linked above, do your homework before buying anything! And, if there's a name-brand LED bulb available (Philips, Osram, Sylvania) that would be preferred over no-names. These may be very expensive.

I have the Auxito H4's in my daily driver E420 and they are... good... -ish. Love the lumens output on low beam. Hate the white color. Not super impressed with high beams or the overall pattern. My lights/reflectors are 30 years and 250kmi old and I don't know how good the chrome is, which may not help with pattern / output. If I could get a lower color temp (more yellow) that would be awesome.

That said, with the Auxito LED's, on low beams, I get a LOT of people flashing their lights at me. I mean a LOT. The lights are aimed properly. One of these nights I want to have my wife drive that car towards me while I'm in a different car and see for myself if there's glare issues for oncoming drivers or if people just don't like the higher lumens.

I’ve noticed that where I live in the OC that most of the new cars blind you at night. I thought it was just everyone was just lacking road courtesy and driving w/ their high beams on. I’m probably mistaken and it just the new technology but it’s pretty unnerving sometimes.

Many new cars have auto high beam systems that use a front mounted camera, when the camera detects other headlights, the system will switch from high beams to low beams and switch back again when there are no on-coming headlights detected. These systems don't always work as intended.

The only proper way to retrofit better lighting into the factory headlights is to take your lenses off the car, grind/polish out the center fluting and retrofit a proper HID reflector. The results are on part with modern HID equipped cars.

I gave up caring about glare for oncoming motorists when I observed the same thing that @TerryA observed. Here in the SF Bay area, where it seems like every 3rd car is a Tesla, I get blinded constantly because Teslas have the absolute worst headlight design out there in terms of blinding oncoming drivers. Therefore, I no longer care - mutually assured destruction. I use these 4300K LEDs now in my 500E and am quite satisfied. Note - 68W on low beam and 69W on high at 13 volts.

Note that I never get anyone flashing at me for glare, but I am convinced that this is because everyone around here is already used to being blinded by Teslas so everyone has equally given up.

This is exactly what I was talking about in my previous post about auto high beams, which all Teslas have. The tech is wonky and slow to respond and the problem gets compounded when the auto high beam camera is mounted high on the windshield, if you tint the upper section of the windshield or if something is blocking the camera, the high beams never shut off.

no one here in nyc has flashed their lights at me so far... i do like that the light was whiter vs the vintage yellow? to see the road in front of me to see pot holes and such.

it doesnt seam any brighter than any of the newer cars i encounter and it gave me a more modern clarity on the road

A fellow NYC'er. appreciate the LED information.

@Jlaa,
I agree w/ Jlaa on the Teslas. In Orange County Teslas are taking over the roads. When I pull up to a stop light with around 10 cars usually 50% are Teslas.

Meanwhile I’m still on my original set of Osram bulbs. I still have a spare.

hi terry. which model osrams you using?

@yao500e,
I honestly don’t know. They have been on the car since around 2005 when I installed the Euro E-Code headlights. I bought the lights from Omegabenz and he gave me the best Oshrams available at the time. The pic above has the number on the rim if you can make it out. I still not sure if it the same bulb as installed in the car.

I’m not going to remove them to check the numbers. When and if I burn one out I’ll post what bulbs they are. Until then I can report that I’m very happy with them especially on high beam.

lol

Terry's photo above is Osram 64199 which is a 24-volt bulb... wouldn't work well in our 12v systems! :duck:

I believe @omegabenz was selling Osram Hyper halogens back then, either 85/80w or 70/65w (both NLA now). There are newfangled bulbs available today with similar performance to the Hypers, if you want to stick with halogens.

@gsxr,
Thanks for the update on my spare. It came with the MB Spare Bulb Box I got from Captruff many years ago. I should probably check out all of the bulbs to see what fits and works.

AH, that explains it. That spare bulb box (cool piece of kit, btw) was for a Unimog or something similar, IIRC... which might explain the 24v rating. Definitely check all the other bulbs and verify if they are 12v or 24v.
