WANTED Looking for 500E ignition control unit

hey all,

Had a bank of cylinders go out on me on the highway recently. It appears the ignition control unit is busted and not delivering power to one side. Part # 013 545 6432. Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

It could be a bad coil, bad wire, or something else with the 1 dead distributor... how did you verify it was the EZL (ignition control unit)? Generally the only way to confirm is swapping in a known-good EZL.

Anyway, you can find replacements on eBay but be careful about the part numbers, many sellers list 4.2L EZL's as fitting 5.0L engines and you really want the correct 5.0L EZL. I used to sell tested EZL's on eBay for ~$450 but I've been taking a hiatus since eBay now reports gross sales to the IRS.

All the 5.0L EZL's are interchangeable which opens up the part numbers to choose from (013-545-64-32, 014-545-43-32, 015-545-61-32). Looks like there are several available under $200 but check the seller's feedback. The only way to verify a used EZL has no problems is to check live data with SDS/HHT-Win, although if there are persistent fault codes that cannot be cleared that would also indicate a bad one. Most sellers have no way to test and just hope what they sell works... you get to do the testing.

:shocking:

I can't 100% verify it is the EZL, that's just what I was told by Malibu Motors of Santa Monica, CA after limping the car over there last week. They seem to be a reputable shop but I don't have an extensive relationship with them. I'm pretty sure it isn't a bad coil/wire since I had engine sputtering issues earlier this year that were semi-mitigated by putting in new plugs/caps/etc... Thanks for the info re: 5.0L EZL's. Malibu Motors told me the units retail for $4k which seemed outrageous, so if I can find even a questionable one on eBay for $200 to take a small gamble on I'd be happy with that.

Yep, MSRP is over $4000 which is insane. Discount dealers may have it for "only" about $3k. It was showing NLA for a while but MB Classic is showing "available" again, so maybe they found a couple in a dusty box in the back of the warehouse...

which part # are you searching? On classicparts.mbusa.com it's still showing 013 545 6432 as "no longer available"

013-545-64-32 went out of production back in mid-1992 and was replaced with new/improved versions. All the 5.0L numbers supersede to 015-545-61-32, which shows available per the link I posted above. However, you'd need to confirm availability with a dealership as the Classic website can be days or weeks behind when it comes to NLA stuff.

I have a used / tested unit with P/N: 015-545-61-32
Price is 200$ + shipping 50$
