Looking for mechanic recommendation in Houston TX for 500E

Working on a 93 500E that has been in our family since new. Unfortunately I am doing this remotely. I am in Washington state and the car is in Houston TX. At this point I am looking for recommendations for a shop / mechanic in Houston (preferably NW corner) who might be able to help troubleshoot.

Symptoms are starts cold, warms up and then dies., will not restart until fully cool. I am leaning towards CPS, but do not want to just swap parts, they have already replaced the catalysts because someone diagnosed that as the issue. Made no difference but they did install a new O2 sensor while they had exhaust out.

TIA,

Jeff

Jeff, I agree, this very much sounds like a crank position sensor - not uncommon for these to fail. New OEM Bosch would be a good idea as preventive maintenance, they are not expensive, and less than 1 hour labor to R&R. That is a real shame an incompetent tech/shop/owner replaced OE catalysts (which are very high quality) with aftermarket. Ouch. Whatever shop did that, get the car out of there ASAP.

@nocfn and @gerryvz may know where to go in Houston. I think TGA (link) is one of the good options.

BTW, welcome aboard!

Wow! I can’t imagine replacing the catalytic converters for an issue like that. Misfire issues? Houston has a lot of humidity maybe caps and rotors if they were allowed to get real bad. like Dave said CPS is most likely I’m just trying to figure out why someone would replace the cats as the first diag.

Your best bet in the NW Houston area is going to be GR Auto Care in Spring/Tomball, TX. The owner, Larry, is a good friend of mine and they are very very familiar with the E500E, 124, 126, 107, and so forth. I last had them do a final service of my G-wagen in 2016 to prepare it for driving from Texas to Maryland when I moved here. Please tell Larry if you call him that Gerry Van Zandt in Maryland sent you.

YEP GR Auto Care if you are BW8 NW or west of 45/north of the loop. If on the SW side of the city/mid-town try TGA as the owner there has a E500. Mine was serviced there as well prior to my ownership.
