Lower harness rebuild

I'm in the process of eradicating some electrical gremlins and pulled out the badly decayed lower harness in the process. Seeing as how this is much simpler than the upper harness I'm just going to rebuild this one myself; one snag though: the oil level sensor plug. The plug for the sensor is molded so I can't disassemble it, is this plug used in any other applications, like a newer model maybe?

I believe this plug is indeed available as a separate part.

Can you post a picture of the sensor plug?

Given the reduced price on the lower harness as of Jan-2014... why spend time rebuilding with questionable aftermarket wire (or, at significant expense to obtain correct wire)... instead of just installing a new harness? As has been stated repeatedly on the forum, the new harness will NOT degrade like the originals. It is a one-time expense. I've replaced several of these and I never, ever thought to myself "gee, rebuilding would be a good idea next time." A new (500E lower harness) will set you back around ~$225 from one of the discount dealers, last I checked.... the 400E lower harness is even cheaper.

I can get a 034 E420 400E lower harness for $150 shipped.

Much less then the 036 part, I just sold one on banzworld.

036 is $215 plus shipping

Found some pics online:

(item 1 in the drawing above)

So looks like it's used on the E320 and 6 cylinder W140s as well.

clarkZ71: any problem with sharing the harness part number, if I can get it quickly for $150 maybe I don't want to rebuild one.

gsxr: 1) I have quite a bit of excellent quality wire leftover from previous projects, 2) my labor is free, 3) a cost of $225 still makes it worth my while, $150 makes it questionable, 4) come on, it's 4 wires in the harness that the insulation falls off of.

The metal pin socket is 003 545 26 26
The plastic outer housing is 014 545 07 28
the rubber surround is 008 997 07 81

That is an off the shelf MB connector, and the rubber covering is also an off the shelf part.

I have both of them in my parts stock, brand new, from MB.

I will be happy to send the plastic connector and the rubber piece to you, in MB packaging, for $12 postpaid, if you want them.

See this thread for some details on the M104 lower harness, including photos of the connectors, which is fairly similar to the M119 lower harness.
You can see what a bad lower harness looks like.

By the way, I have to fundamentally agree with GSXR here, with regard to rebuilding the lower harness as opposed to just buying one new. It's far better to just buy a new one. They are not that expensive of a part.

Cheers,
Gerry

No, 6 cylinder, 400E /E420 and E500E all use different lower harness.
Vader, he was saying that the connector and rubber covering are used in other harnesses, not the overall harness itself.

That said, the M104 and M119 harnesses are physically different, but conceptually and functionally similar, and use identical connectors for some of the connections.

Cheers,
Gerry

My bad. I keep missing the "400E subforum" thing. It's the 500E lower harness that is $200+.

The 400E lower harness (124-540-31-30) is $150 MSRP, about $120 via the discount dealers (plus shipping).

No worries Vader! I still think you totally rock !! :clarkz2::clarkz2::clarkz2:

When I bought my lower harness for my E320 wagon, I was not aware that the connectors would be included, so I ended up buying "separates" of the plastic connectors and the rubber cover for the oil level sensor plug, which is why I have extras available.

Yeah, I know, rebuilding a $150 part makes me seem like a cheapskate; which of course I'll blame on my parents depression-era thriftiness. On the other hand, the only thing standing between me and a good as new harness is a $12 connector, 24' of wire from my stash and no more than an hour of cutting and soldering. This habit also stems from those good old days when I barely had money to put gas in my car, besides, couldn't buy new parts for a '64 Dart back then even if I had the money. What can I say? Old habits die hard.

Gerry, do you happen to recall if the new harness came with the metal brackets and silicone grommets?

What is the temperature rating of the wire you have available, and are you sure it is all the correct gauge? If your time is free, that is a help. There's no way I could justify the time involved, but that's just me...

I'm finding the harness commonly available for $120 so I'm being won over by just plain good sense. For those that have installed the harness themselves, how hard is it to snake the upper portion up to where it belongs provided you have a drag line to pull it up from topside? That rectangular connector looks like it could snag something, I can always disassemble it to make it less bulky and reassemble once I get it in place.

I did this about 3 weeks ago. If you tie a line to the old harness at the large ring connector and then pull that down from below just past the starter you can then reverse the process. I did tape the rectangular connector to the harness using painters tape so it would not snag. I was able to pull it up without a helper feeding it from below. You are only pulling the section from the starter back. It helps to disconnect the upper harness main connector to give yourself more room. This part of the harness replacement is not bad compared to some of the other fun you will have.harness out.jpg

I don't think it's a "cheapskate" thing ... at least, I wasn't inferring that. Rather a "time ROI vs. cost of a new one" thing.

The harness comes ready to rock and roll, fully loaded.
