MB Gearshift Decal, Parts substitution – are they having a laugh?!

Hi all,


I recently ordered a replacement decal for beside the gear shifter on my German market 1992 500E. This was ordered from my MB main dealer & had to come from Germany – so almost 2 weeks later it arrived by post today.




What a shock that was – MB Germany have sent me a piece of paper as pictured that looks nothing like the one I ordered. (The black sticker beside the Auto Gearshift lever) WTF!? [FONT=&quot]Speechless [/FONT]. £14.50 too for the pleasure. Needless to say I’ll be inquiring with the dealership tomorrow to express my delight.

Looks like another famous MB "supercession" ..... likely not much you can do other than having a member take an exact photo and somehow creating an exact repro sticker......

I’ve never had a problem like this before with MB parts – very strange. They may as well have put a ‘IOU’ note inside the packet. It’s not even a sticker! In any case I found an original genuine decal which I have purchased. However it is in English – not German like the original. No biggie but just yet another NLA original part to contend with! I can make my own repro sticker in due course - for now I will fit the English sticker.

I got 'the last one' from a private fleabay seller Dave. Original MB sticker. I would not try ordering another off MB incase another dud turns up

Shesh! Some one at MB had to stand around the copier for 10 seconds to make that. Probably had to take a coffee break in the middle.

It's possible to get decal paper for your inkjet printer and print your own. You print it on this paper, then you shoot it with Krylon clear (some specific Krylon is recommended by the decal paper maker) They make white decal paper and clear decal paper to print on. Don't know how well it stands up to heat, or over the long term, etc. But if you are handy with photoshop or powerpoint and have a scanner you can make some good facsimiles of original decals.

I don't hate the decal. But I do hate the ridiculous safety nanny it describes. Early 124's had no shift interlock with either the ignition switch, nor the brake pedal. Thankfully, both can be defeated on the E500E if desired.

Also reminds me that the coffee they give you thru the car window is hot, and if you pay 6 bux for coffee, litigation is not possible if you burn your nut-sack drinking and driving. Instead, Darwin award for you on the front page since nobody told you it was hot.
