Mercedes-Benz 722.3 Valve Body Internals (video)

Nice visual! They should also mention that the number of those plastic balls could vary, and I've yet to find the details on year/model to know who and why have less balls :yayo:

Someone who knows those "balls" and their placement has the knowledge to change shift points and performance of the transmission.

When I was in trade school learning to be a mechanic, we had two 4 week sections on drive trains, one of which was nothing but automatic transmissions. One of the instructors was a guy who was considered the "guru" of hot-rodding good old PowerGlide transmissions for the drag racing community. Watching him perform his "voodoo" on a valve body was amazing. He knew what balls to remove and holes to drill out and how big to improve the shift points and beef up the transmission's performance.

Those two sections, mainly the one that focused primarily on automatic transmissions, were one of the most fascinating learning experiences I've had. The ability of someone to come up with the design of such a device continues to amaze me.

Dan,

I would love to have a class taken on something like this! I just find it fascinating the engineering went into creating these "pandora" boxes! Someone on FB on one of the AMG/premerger groups said they believe they have the detailed manual on AMG modified VB of 722.3, I've asked if they could share by chance, but crickets...

Understand that at the time as a young man of maybe 19 or 20 my automotive knowledge was limited to engines, electrical and suspension, maybe, at least the stuff that was more commonly dealt with from a maintenance standpoint. That and a lot of my early cars didn't have slush boxes, either.

I had no grasp whatsoever as to how these "majikal boxes" went about their business, and was summarily amazed and astonished at both their complexity and simplicity. I've rebuilt a few domestic automatics, Ford C-4s and GM THMs, but that was some years ago. Still, they're not terribly difficult to work on as long as you have the proper tools (professional grade snap ring pliers!) and a clean place to do it.
