FYI my Honda VF1000 was a F2 not the R-version, that's a different version in most respects you know.
I actually didn't go along so well with this bike, the driving position was wrong for my body. The footpegs was too much forward so I didn't find a good rhythm on winding roads. I used the passenger footpegs, but then it's a hassle with the shifting & braking. But the handlebar position was the worst thing. This was among the first Honda's with a split handlebar with adjustable position in steps, but no position was correct for the wrist angle. The congenital human wrist angle is around 15° measured along the outside of the forearm/hand, a longer period with loading the hand in any other position, will stress the forearm muscles. This happened to me so I was pretty cramped on long drives. Besides that it was a very nice bike.
