Nice 5-minute video on the BMW E30 M3

It's become just as rare to see them as our own cars. I didn't know about the cabriolet and evo models. I have only owned one 4 cyl. car, a 944 turbo. Plenty of power available however the 4 cyl. does not lend itself to running an AC compressor unnoticeably. Probably not many owners using these as daily drivers though. A great design and my favorite M3.

A great car, although there's a robust debate over whether the E30 or the E46 is the best. Some say this one is too "raw", the E9X too "refined" and the E46 "just right" -- sort of a Goldilocks thing. I only ever considered the E36 vs. the E46, and the E46 won that one. I just can't see a sub 300hp car -- but that's just me. They're all better on the track than the street -- not enough torque -- ironically except the E9X, which is better on the street (naturally aspirated lightweight V8) but too heavy and the steering a bit numb for the twisties.

But thanks for the video, Honch. One of my guys in Michigan is restoring one now. Charcoal over Red coupe. Very nice!

Cheers,

my friend had 2 of these, we would max these cars out in the city. these were the cars back in the day. surprisingly, my e21 is just as fast as the e30 m3

I owned about 16 of these back in the day. I use to buy and flip them all the time borrow money from my mom without my dad knowing. My first E-30 M3 I picked up in high school work my ass off saving finally was able to afford it. ($13k in 1992). One of my older co-workers use to say to me "you will never own a M-car" it really pissed me off and motivated me at the time, he owned a very nice white 88 with euro close ratio dog leg box plus many other mods. I loved that car it taught me how to drive after two motors and about 100 track days I decided to sell her for $17,500 (1997) to build a purpose build e-36 race car. I laugh at what they are going for these days, because they weren't the best street cars much rather have a 325is on the street, but it will always be a perfect track car.

Yet another common thread among "car guys," the "misappropriation and/or diversion of money" from the mother, aunt etc., etc.

Starts out with using "lunch money" at the local hobby shop and ends up with "we really need this for the car to make it safe" and "it will be worth a lot more in the near future, we could sell it and go on vacation to (the place she always wanted)."
The parts never get sold and the vacation is put on the Credit Card until we think she forgot about it. When it comes time to sell there's always "the market is down" or "he said he would send me a check!"
It's been going on before I was born and I'm doing my best to continue the tradition.

I had a very nice well sorted 91 e30 m3 in 2013/14, was a really cool car but prices they go for these days is purely moronic imo (eag in cincy has a couple low low mile ones for eye popping six figure prices)

I ultimately tired of the car after about a year and a half because as others mention novelty wears off for use in everyday street driving....was always a second car for me but I live in the city so would have to really really go out of my way to drive out of the city to get enjoyment with it (basically had to make dedicated special driving trips with no alternative purpose). Car kinda sucks below 4K rpm, so the casual, drive it to the office on a Friday move wasn't all that enjoyable for me....I bought mine for 24 and sold it for 29 18 months later and felt good about myself.......had I hung on to it I coulda been paid another 10-15k to drive the crap out of it

I do not have a thread on the subject but others have done the swap and have threads on other forums.

I used the 5 speed overdrive transmission out of a 1986 300e. I have a friend who used the R129 with the dual mass flywheel, others have used the dogleg out of the 190e 16v.

Really? :respekt: Did you use the transmission from an early manual R129? Or is there another thread in which you describe the project?

For a 15 YO kid, I thought he did great evading the police, ha!

I was thinking the same thing. He's going to be a hell of a wheelman once he graduates to more serious and violent crime...

Sweet video. I got caught going 117 mph in mine on the way to Loudon N.H. to watch the indy car race I was seventeen at the time (Nigel Mansell won the race) . I received a speeding and reckless driving because the cop had to go over 110 mph to catch us at the time, my father was not happy that day in court. I was racing a Bonneville SSE it was around 4:30 AM and we were the only ones on the road at the time. So lets correct some facts on this video E-30 M3s had 189 HP not 240 HP. Also no supercharger and top speed was 145 MPH not over 150 MPH like the video said, And Klink E-30 M3s don't break, it must have run out of gas.

:jono: 100% chain yanking on my part, as I'm sure you already knew. I knew you'd comment just for the factual errors alone.
And yes, I thought that it looked like he was simply out of gas. Other than the off roading, that was no test at all for that M3.
