No start after freezing temps.

My E420 normally lives in the garage and stays warm at night, however my 67 bug is undergoing a starter replacement and the E420 has been relegated to the driveway. A month ago I also had it parked outside and had a no start condition. Fuel pressure as good. Out of immediate ideas and places to be, I tapped on the ECU housing with the handle of a screw driver and sure enough, it started. Fast forward to last week, car started and drove but was revving up and down consistently at 1500rpm. Based on threads here and some correlating diag (unplugging the EZL vac line brought the idle down to normal ranges), I felt strongly it was the T/LLR. Stopping and restarting the engine solved the high idle hunting. Hasn't come back. Fast forward to today, freeze overnight, no start. I pulled the T/LLR and tried my two, but untested modules with no luck. Reinstalled the "working" unit. Still no go. Pulled the WOT LH module and installed a 21xx variant that I believe to be good but also untested. No luck. Reinstalled the WOT LH module and the car fired up fine.

What now? Besides testing and verifying some modules, should I be looking at the BM which I had replaced? I suppose the obvious answer is to pull codes the next time it's in this state. At this point I have multiple spares of everything and while im confident the 21xx LH module was good, I'm not sure what to think. This weekend I will work out which modules are known good. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Ps is there a parts list of capacitors for the LH modules? I now have 2 spare but not good WOT modules I'd like to fix and sell back to the community.

I can't help with the no start. Are you referring to tapping the can container with the modules or the ETA?

The capacitors needed for the LH modules can be found under "parts for sale" Search "capacitors"

ETA and T/LLR will not cause a no-start condition. These 2 items will cause the high idle rpm / idle hunting.

With >50psi fuel pressure at the rail during cranking, and no-start, it's either fuel (LH) or spark (EZL). When swapping LH modules, make sure they are FULLY seated... weird things can happen if they aren't seated.

It's gotta be the LH. No start again today but no time fiddling.

Well this led to a long drawn out sequence of events. I replaced the warm natured 012-545-30-32 out of the car and put in a 021 545 70 32 I purchased from @sheward . Drove it on a few trips and the CEL came on for O2 sensor. I replaced it with another 021 545 70 32. Same thing. I replaced it with another 021 545 70 32, same thing (I have quite a collection of LH modules now).

Satisfied that this was indeed a legitimate code, despite not having any codes on my 012-545-30-32, I pulled the O2 sensor and tested it. The heater circuit ohmed out OK and with a torch generated voltage.. I started ohming out pins 9,14,15 in the LH connector to find that one of the pins on the plug was broken in the tunnel. New replacement is on the way.

I've read that the CIS-E variants of the M119, when a dead o2 sensor is found, will just run open loop. I wonder if the 012-545-30-32 does the same? Some pictures of the oxygen sensor location from inside the car.

Interested in selling one of those LH modules?
These are e420/400e modules. The first one I repaired, 012..., fixed some symptoms (clicking relay) but not others (in ability to hold idle. The second one I repaired, an 014 module, is running like a champ. I've now pulled the chip from the 012 and swapped newer 021 boards into the 012 chasing with the 012 chip. This needs to be tested, but to answer your question, yes and I have one in hand that just needs testing.

Thanks. I have a 1995 E420 without ASR and I thought if you have several LH modules and want to unload one, I could use a second spare so I would be able to rule out a bad LH module for troubleshooting purposes. If that doesn’t leave you with a spare for yourself I wouldn’t sell it. I don’t want to be a “hoarder” but these modules seem to be drying up with less 124.034s in the junk yards. If you want to sell it though I would be interested.

I'll sell you a 021.
