Oil Pump Strainer Question

I understand 1101860007 was the original part # for just the rubber piece without the screen, and 1101800355 is the updated/alternative assembly with the larger diameter opening, which DOES include the screen.

Of course I’m tempted to go with the updated part for the best oil flow. (1101800355)
My question is: Are there any drawbacks or benefits to doing this, or does it not really matter?

The main benefit is replacing the old, fossilized rubber pickup. I don't think there is any significant benefit to the larger size, but it sure doesn't hurt. I've seen some old ones broken, but that is unusual.

This is a once-per-ownership job, if it has never been done. As I've said in the past... any time I buy a car with M119 engine, the first thing I do is drop the oil pan to inspect for chain rail debris, replace the O-ring for the oil level sensor (better yet, replace the entire sensor w hich includes a new O-ring), and if the sump rubber pickup is original... replace that too. And if there is any plastic chain rail debris in the pan, then both valve covers must come off.

Parts are cheap but it's quite a few hours of labor to carefully clean everything.

Yep, that’s exactly what I plan to do. I have no record of it being done, and I’ll be doing the level sensor anyway.

Is the Hella level sensor of acceptable quality? It’s the only one available at FCP at the moment, and I try to order from them whenever possible.

 
There is a comparison of the stock and taller replacement pickups in the HOW-TO on the job of replacing it + the oil level sender.
 
I went and used the strainer with larger pores. They are not that bigger, it's still a fine mesh. Technically filter should capture anything meaningful in size. My original strainer that had ~120k mi on it was totally free of any debris
 
If there is any concern about the wire mesh strainer size, you can re-use the old one if desired. The rubber hardens and needs replacement, but the wire mesh is typically fine.
