Awesome color. I can't tell from the if it's just because of the shade in the first photo, but it looks an almost olive color. Either way, gorgeous car man!

I'd check out this place... you send them your old ETA, and they rebuild it for a fraction of the cost of a new one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 0715495300

Only problem is, they may not ship internationally - not sure. There are several used ones on eBay, claimed to be good, for even less $$$. Have you already replaced the engine harness, and the gear position indicator swtich on the tranny? Both are also possible causes of LHM...

Thanks a lot for that suggestion but unfortunately the ETA has already been paid for! In Sweden a new Mercedes Benz original ETA costs 1800 $. So I think it´s cheap anyway :driving:

This I have done so far on my car because of the LHM-trouble:
-New battery.
-New brake light switch.
-New tires.
-New engine harness.
-New rotors and distributor caps.
-New Electrical Throttle Actuator.
-New NSS (Neutral Safety Switch) on the tranny.
-New Idle Switch behind the accelerator pedal.

Here are some pictures of the old engine harness:

Here are som pictures of the old rotors and distributor caps:
(The Beru to the right is one of the two new rotors)

I will also, if the LHM continues to appear, change the position indicator switch on the tranny!

Are the AMG rims staggered? Do u still have them. Nice paint job and car by the way. I think i prefer them with the AMG rims

If staggered means original AMG rims with AMG marks on them the answer would be yes. And no, I sold them  . I regret that sometimes.
But its allot easier to buy a set of w210 E55 AMG wheels than it is to buy a set of Carlsson 1/12 wheels :gor-gor: . I prefer the Carlsson rims because they remind me of the old original "gullideckel" rim.

Thanks for your comment! // Johan

Finally the "new" ETA arrived from http://germanstar.net/.

"Yes, 0001417725 is interchangeable with 0001417925" :-D

Quote from this URL: http://pages.prodigy.net/jforgione/MB_asr.html
"Recently, I was informed that Beckmann Technologies now rebuilds the unit. Not sure the cost involved but contact them at 1.800.742.1021.
Email from a Beckmann customer: "Beckmann rebuilt a unit for me and it has worked for the past 5 months on my '95 SL500. Name withheld by request"

I also have, thanks to Lex Luthor, a new leather steering wheel (390 mm). Thanks man, it was in perfect condition! NEW! :forumrocks:

/Johan

Can you provide more details -- how much was the refirb? Did you have to send them yours as a core/exchange unit? Would love more details.

Thanks
Gerry

According to their product-list, the price for the above ETA (early type) is $799.50 ;-)
Still pretty expensive, but what is the MB Price? 1300$? Current German Price is ~963.00€

Current USA MSRP for 000-141-79-25 is $1400 USD, or $960 plus shipping from Parts.com (probably a round $1k total). The older type is no longer available new.

:hornets:

For $800, I'd just rather spend the extra 2 bills and get a brand-new unit with the factory warranty. Nothing against Beckmann (I actually think their rebuilds are pretty good, from knowledgeable sources over the years), but for that little bit more, I'd rather just have the real deal. Or a nice used factory one, which could probably be had for $300-500.

Good to know there is actually a source for refirbs though.

Cheers,
Gerry

In Sweden a new original ETA costs $1950. The Beckmann Technologies ETA from http://germanstar.net/Mercedes_Throttle_Actuators.htm costs $755.
When the order is placed you will have this information e-mailed to you: "Thank you for your order. Please be aware that we request the return of your old throttle actuator after you have received the replacement part. A refundable $100 core deposit applies to that end".

So, $1950-$755+$100=$1083 :checkeredflag:

I´m not going to send them mine. I want to take it apart to check if there is anything wrong with it (if you can tell just by looking).

I sure hope that Beckmann Technologies knows what they´re doing!!!!!!!

Ps. In Sweden there are no one who perform this kind of work (not that I know of anyway). Its just too difficult to get it right according to those I have been in contact with through my workshop. Ds.

Spring 2011 :driving:

I have installed the "new" ETA from http://germanstar.net/and it seams to work! LHM-problem is gone (I think (200 km test drive and it has´nt occured yet!)).

Here's to your problem solved :beerchug: Your old wheel doesn't look that bad in the picture until i see the new one.

It´s NOT solved (my problem with Limp Home Mode) It occured again after several kilometers! Interesting though..... :banger:
I have already ordered one part: A "safety neutral switch" with part number: 0005456206 (I read about it in another forum (peachpart.com i think)).

If the problem occurs again after that I will need to change the Electronic Accelerator Control Module part number: 1245454432.
I´m not interested in a new one. I want to buy an old used one. Send me a message if you have an EACM with matching number for sale!

But I think the safety neutral switch will solve my problem! :detective:

Thank you soooo much gsxr

I have one more question for you my friend. Do you know where the "Idle Controll Switch"-that lives in the throttle lever is located?!
I belive they call it "CPT"....

// Johan G

And to add to that, there are also other units which can cause the limp-home mode. One is the brake-light switch and the other one is that switch directly connected with the accelerator Pedal. Also i have read 2,3 time that broken ABS Sensors/Vehicle Speed sensors at front and/or rear caused the limp-home mode.
Furthermore the WIS mentiones even for pre 10/1992 cars that a production-error in one/both of the front wheel hubs could trigger limp-home mode.

Hi Johan,

I believe you are referring to the switch behind the accelerator pedal? I've not personally had a problem with that item, but it has been mentioned by other folks.

As Christian described above, there are other causes of the LHM. It would be best to clear all codes, and then check codes again immediately after an LHM episode. Those codes should help pinpoint the problem. However if the NSS is original, it's a good idea to replace it anyway, as preventive maintenance... they are usually toast after 15+ years, regardless of miles.

:banana1:

I know there are allot of components that will cause this problem if one of them doesnt work properly! Thank you so much guys for your input!

I placed an order at Mercedes Benz last week and I have now recieved:
Component nr 1. "NSS" Neutral Safety Switch.
proxy.php

Component nr 2. "CPT" Idle Controll Switch (only on cars with ASR).
proxy.php

Switch part number: A140 545 01 14.
proxy.php

There are three fault codes (just recieved a phonecall from my workshop).
Two of them will be fixed with the NSS and the third will be fixed with the Idle Controll Switch :D

Almost to good to be true! Wish me and my 500E good luck :3gears:

The NSS is not too bad to replace. The switch behind the accelerator pedal is a PITA, IMHO.

Cheers,
Gerry

Also, make sure it's the "idle switch" behind the pedal. There is another idle switch that is internal to the ETA (electronic throttle actuator), which requires replacing the ETA with a new or rebuilt unit... the switch isn't replaceable separately. The fault code should indicate which one, there is a letter/number identifier for each switch from the fault code. If it's switch M16/1s2 (closed throttle position switch), that's inside the ETA. I'm not sure if there is a code for the switch behind the pedal...?

The NSS was 0,7 h in the system. The Idle switch took a little longer to switch haha It was someone else PITA haha... So you are correct Mr G :D !

Thanks again, but it is the Idle switch behind the pedal. I have already changed the ETA (have you missed that part?).
The ETA I bought was a rebuilt one. And yes, it could have been a bad one but I dont think (HOPE) so :wank307: .

:forumrocks:

Update,

There were three error codes stored when they checked the car last week at the workshop.
Two of them pointed directly at the NSS and the third pointed at the Idle switch :gor-gor: .
I did not get a hold of the codes because of the mechanic. He did´nt think I wanted them (the exakt codes I mean). Too bad.
They would have been great to publish here in order to help someoneelse with the same problem if it occurs.

I took the car for a testdrive last Friday and it worked perfectly fine, no LHM what so ever (again hmmm), just until this happened..... :banger:

I have ordered a new one at my Mercedes workshop. It was not cheap (~800 USD). But it will turn out great! :D
(I checked Germanstar.net but they could not help me. Wrong part number).

Other than that a small thing has happend to the car exterior:

Looks nice with badge :thumbsup2:
But you paid way too much for cooler- i got one from Behr for 165 Euro.

I would recommend replacing the upper radiator hose with a new OE hose from the dealer. The aftermarket hose tends to rub the power steering reservoir, because they are not shaped properly. The photo shows an aftermarket hose. Good insurance with a new radiator anyway... along with a new t-stat too.

Thank you so much! I kind of like it with the badge on 8-)
And you´re probably correct regarding the pricetag. But thats just my choice. Thanks for the tips!
(If you buy an OE-part you will recive 2 years of "spare part"-warranty on the part (you know what I mean). That´s not a bad thing :D )

It has been alot of :spend: but when it comes to w124.036 it´s worth it :D . I will change the t-stat and I just placed an order at the workshop regarding the upper radiator hose :thumbsup2: .
And yes, it´s a great insurance. What if it had happend on the high way far far far from home..... :wank307:

The radiator has not arrived from Germany yet... But the new upper radiator hose and the thermostat has arrived. So I changed them.

The old upper radiator hose was a Mercedes hose, but an old one probably (it had a star and a part number A124.... marked on it).
That hose (the old one) had a spring of metal in it as a reinforcement. There was no reinforcement in the new hose....
proxy.php

But you were right GSXR (as always :D ). The shape is different... (btw, the old hose did´nt have any rub mark on it from the power steering reservoir).
proxy.php

New radiator installed (incl. a new thermostat and an upper hose). I do belive (been driving 500 km) that the problem with the LHM is solved! :wahoo:
The NSS and the Idle switch made my day (and everything else) :D . So...I´m very happy right now and it is all thanks to forums (and the persons who uses them to spread information) like this!

I took some new pictures of the car now when everything works as it should! Enjoy ;)

Your car looks great, Johan! :-)
It is so good you managed through all that trouble you've had with the car.

Btw, have you checked the color code on it, is it 172 anthracite grey metallic?

-arnt-

Hi Arnt, thanks for your comment! It took some time and alot of money but, the most important thing, it was worth it :)
The color code on my car is 172 anthracite grey metallic. Btw, what do you think about a small scandinavian 500E/E500 springmeet 2012? :)

.
Wow - so your car does have the color which my SuperMerc had from new! :-)
It is great to see it in real life, it is a very shiny color.

You grabbed my words - we must absolutely aim for a scandinavian mini gathering at springtime 2012. During winter time I'll place a parts order at the MB-dealer in your town again, so I guess I can pick up the goods at the same time.

In your last SMS you mentioned this would be your last week with the car before hibernation. But have you seen the weather report for the next ten days? http://www.yr.no/sted/Sverige/Värmland/Arvika/langtidsvarsel.html
You should probably postpone the hibernation Johan. :-)

-arnt-

That sounds great Arnt. Biltjänst is the place to be and to buy stuff from :) !

I would have postpone the hibernation but I have other plans that does not include driving :)
#1 - There is a big market in Arvika this weekend equals to big party with lots of alchohol I presume haha.
#2 - The weekend after this one will be spent in our capital - Stockholm - will be visiting my friend Henrik.

But when I read the weather report you so nicely attached ;) I´m thinking of canceling everything and buy some stocks in Statoil & Michelin and fuel the w124.036 up severel times and just drive! hahaha

Great car and great thread!

One question about the NSS replacement. I've hear the NSS may cause low rpms (450-500). Did you experience this?

I have an early 93 myself with the same problems. I think you may have saved my day! At least it's on the order list =)

Thank you! I´m glad you like it!

I can´t answer that question though. I was not the one who performed the work. Don´t know if the MB mechanic had that problem.
Good luck to you and your car!! // Johan

Hello!

Here comes a small update. I have ordered i new exhaust system for my car (incl. catalytic converter part)
I have recived the two mufflers (looks really nice) but I´m still waiting for the catalytic converter to arrive (not the same company who made the cat-part).

proxy.php

Btw, thank you so much HI-power for that comment!

Awaiting results !
But I think its going to be positive, they look the same as original..but stainless steel ?
