Another question - you mentioned getting a little sideways at WOT shifts. Does your tranny shift very firmly at WOT? Mine doesn't... it was my impression that normal 500E's shift very smoothly, no way they chirp the tires or break traction. Perhaps you have a modified valve body too?

If I start in "B" in "Sport" mode or if I do a kick down I'll chirp for two shifts and feel a bit of sideways action as I break a bit of traction. Mind you this is on a very recent complete transmission overhaul that shifts like butter on normal driving and with stock wheels/suspension sitting on 90% tread reamaining Goodyear GS-H's
I love it when my 500E's power suprises me, fun stuff hahaha

The E500E is one of the BEST drift cars on slow track EVER,,,,,,,,,,,,,, very powerful and easy to control and the steering point is excellent.. can take very sharp cicane and keep the tires in right position

LSD ...... is very rare... on E500E

It sure is rare! I'm building one right now for my E500, just ordered the new clutch pack, bearings, and seals today. I hope to have it completed this winter, and installed in late springtime. I'm going to take photos of the project once I start assembling it.

So, other than the tag on the rear end, is there another way to confirm I have limited slip?

Yes:

1) Jack the rear of the car up so BOTH rear tires are off the ground
2) Put the transmission in Neutral
3) Turn one of the wheels by hand. If the other wheel turns the same direction, it has LSD. If the other wheel turns the opposite direction, it has the standard/open diff.

Another method is to jack the car up so one tire is off the ground, again put the trans in neutral, and turn the wheel by hand. With LSD there should be moderate resistance, without LSD there should be minimal to no resistance. This is pretty subjective and may be hard to determine if you don't have another vehicle handy for reference. The first method is more conclusive.

Assuming it's a factory clutch-type LSD, the clutches don't last forever... they can be replaced, costs about $400 for a new clutch pack, another $100 or so in fluid & seals, plus labor for the work. Don't worry about that until you notice a lack of LSD performance, though.

It's actually not expensive at all to buy the factory LSD unit. You can get one from Speed-Autoteile.com in Germany for < ?600, plus shipping (and that's for a brand-new Genuine Mercedes LSD!). However it will be another ~?400 or so to have it installed by a rear-end shop (maybe more, if you don't want to R&R the rear axle yourself and take it to a shop). The only reason it's rare, is that not many people know how straightforward the swap is, and for the few who do know, they're not always willing to spend the $$$ when ASR offers electronic limited-slip at no cost.

But anyway, there's no need to spend 1000-1500 ? on a custom aftermarket LSD unit, unless you want something fancier than the OE clutch-type unit (i.e., Quaife, etc).

The car looks lowered so it wouldn't surprise me that Bilstein Sport struts were installed at the same time.

If and when you get the car on a lift, can you take some pics of the exhaust set-up? I'd like to see how it's arranged. I'm still looking for that perfect sound but with my factory straight pipe and perhaps should consider a small resonator like you describe.

bgibby wrote:I have noticed that when I use the FGS & ASR defeat that I get a little sideways shifting into second.

Those of us with a non-LSD or ASR defeat car can cheat a little wheelspin from a start using the "snowchain" switch and manually selecting first gear from a stop. I get the best launches this way.

bgibby wrote:Overall, I look forward to driving this car every time I get behind the wheel.

Once you've taken the car on a long-distance trip, you'll be even more convinced. IMHO there is nothing better for relaxed high-speed distance devouring than your 036.

bgibby wrote:And, I just ran accross a great deal on an 89 928 5sp ($4500), I can't pass it up- this will be my 3rd 928 ownership.

It's often said the E500E was the four-door that Porsche should have built (well, actually they did) and the 928 was the two-door that Mercedes should have built. They really are like close cousins. I've been tempted to purchase one to prepare for open-road rallying as there is more race equipment and tuning specialists available than for our MB's. Several participants with 928's express great confidence in them at the top end.

This is actually my 3rd 928. The first was an 86 5sp, the second was a very rare & low mile (34K) 90GT which I just sold last summer with 79K miles. The 928 really is an excellent high speed tourer which handles remarkably well for it's size & weight. I had both the previous ones over 145mph- extremely stable & I'm sure capable of cruising at those speeds all day.

My 500E has already been on 2 long distance trips- the first from LA to here (So. Oregon Coast) in the middle of the summer & 100+ temps all the way & the second from here to Walla Walla, WA for some of the finest red wine in the country (Abeja- my wife went to high school with the winemaker).

Yes, the other way to tell is to light 'em up.
