Hello,
My name is Chris, just purchased a 1993 all original 2 owner, bone stock.
She is a lady, with a story.
I bought this car to flip and fund a Toyota FJ40 restoration I am 3/4's through.
But dammit, I have always loved this car, and although I thought it was going to be a total rat, it ended up being a rock solid, two owner beast.
The owner I just purchased it from paid $42000 or so in 2000 Star Marked( the old MB CPO) from a Mercedes-Benz dealer in Ma.
He put 15,000 or so miles on her in 14.5 years. It sounds like all roses so far.
The car has around 61000 original miles and has very, very little rust. I took a magnet all over ever fenders, quarter panels, corners etc...
Mechanically she is in much, much better shape than I had dreamed. I am in the middle of doing pads and rotors, a water pump, both rear shocks and the obvious flushes and fluids. The previous owner actually kept up with oil changes.
Now the rest of my story.
The paint was redone on half the car. Ray Charles did the prep work, and Stevie Wonder did the painting. Jose Feliciano did the clear, and I think Helen Keller did the quality control. I honestly have never seen a worse job on such a quality car. It is a complete shame what he did to this car.
The previouss owner also was a smoker, he took what should be a $60,000 car by todays standards, and in my opinion destroyed what he had.
This car is not beat, was unmolested and by all means should be one of the top 15 in the United States. But how or why he would ask someone to paint it, and someone who had no clue is beyond me.
So, what do I do is the question? I really was trying to just flip it, but the further I get into it, the nicer the car is. Realistically, its 10 grand I really don't have right now. I also say, with some interior detailing, and a quality paint job, this car with its miles, will rival most cars I have seen for sale with the exception of the truly rare sub 25000 mile cars. Now I am thinking of dumping my first project, and keeping this.
Realistically though, as much as I love the car, I have other automotive passions that I would trade it towards eventually.
When I tell you the paint was done poorly, we are talking paint roller, spray paint combo on the entire hood, front quarters and roof and rear pillars.
This is an entire repaint car.
I would love some opinions.
Pictures to follow as soon as I learn how.

Re: New Owner 1993 500E

Congrats on the car. If your goal is to flip it I guess it all depends on what you paid and what it will bring in its current condition. I would not put any money into it if my goal was to flip it. Chances are you will not recoup any money you put into it. Silver with black interior is a popular color combo.

Re: New Owner 1993 500E

Well, that was my intention, but like everyone on here, I have the same addiction, I love these cars I just assumed I would never come across a nice one I could afford, I had missed the time when they were attainable.
The truck I am in the middle of doing over has run over budget and I saw the paint originally on this car and just assumed it was a typical rust bucket, but it is not at all. I was just gonna do a quick flip. I honestly bought this car because I knew if it was crap, the powertrain would still be worth what I would have to pay for it.
Now I find myself falling in love with this thing. My best friend is a master Benz tech, so he took it to put it up on the lift, it was covered not running well at all when I went to see it, and was covered with crap all over it. I just assumed it was a rat when I bought it, then I had it detailed because the smoke smell was pretty bad, and I wanted to see what I was dealing with...Boy I was surprised and so was my buddy.

Re: New Owner 1993 500E

Really weird condition for this mileage ... what the PO did with it ?

Not sure (pics are not the best) but it looks to me it has a sun/heat damage.

faded arrows on cluster? faded paint ? hard leather ? faded wood ?

Re: New Owner 1993 500E

Appreciate your reply.
Popular color combo, as in not desirable? As say Black/Black?
I feel as though the Black interior is strong compared to the Lighter interiors, no?
I have never really considered owning it in any other combo than Silver/Black or Black/Black, but that is just me.
I have owned multiple 1994 E320A cabs over the years, perhaps I am un-educated when it comes to 500E collector.

Brilliant silver (744) is really the best looking paint (at least to me) . I would really love to get one more 036 in brilliant silver 500E or E500 LTD .

It is just a matter of taste but folks here prefer rare colors which are sometimes are not the best looking.

In other part of the world your color combo would be a top choice along with 040 and 199.

Re: New Owner 1993 500E

Hey Roma,
Actually the leather is not hard, and the fade is probably because the flash was on, on my iphone. The pictures do suck, I am sorry. I will get better ones, We changed the water pump right after those photos this afternoon, and there was only sunlight in the shop, we had killed the lights.Car came out of NY and then the last 15 years was in Ma. First owner had it six years in East Aurora NY then the last 15 years outside of Boston.
It was retailed on October 14th 1993. I tracked warranty work through 22k miles, then have customer pay service history from when it sold the second time at 45k miles, up to 54k miles.
The 2nd owner did not do much with the car since 2010.

Great it does not have a sun damage, flash makes things look worse, LOL.

Still it is a mystery why this car was repainted at such a low mileage ? (real mystery cuz appears to be all straight no accident)

Why is the hell it was done that bad ? (40-60k miles E500E has never been a cheap car)

What's happened to the water pump ? leaking or something ?

Re: New Owner 1993 500E

I am assuming age and lack of driving, you can hear a noise, also over heated the day I went to look at the car, the battery was shot and the owner jumped the car and let it run for an hour thinking he would recharge a battery that was gone.
Why is the paint so bad. Honestly it is not bad, it is the worst ever. I have seen $100 cars at Walmart that are nicer than the nose of this car, and it is as straight as they come. The owner said it was oxidizing and one of his clients said he could fix it. Well, Holly Hobby nail polish would have been better. It is terrible. Worse in person than the pics. It makes no sense. It is so bad I almost walked away from even taking the car, assuming if he did that to the car, who knows how bad it is. After talking to him, he just trusted the wrong guy, and by 2010 he was 70 plus years old and kind of just put the car away.

I'd say silver/black is one of the more desirable combinations, and it wasn't particularly common. Definitely worth keeping/fixing.

Water pumps on the M119 are a pretty rare failure. If they're not leaking there is probably nothing wrong with it. Overheating (defined as 115-120°C) is more likely due to a stuck t-stat, bad radiator, or dead fan clutch that is not spinning the fan blade as much as it should. The electric fans should kick on high speed at 107C, btw.

:welcome3:

Re: New Owner 1993 500E

GSXR,
Thanks, I think I agree with you, my buddy suggested it, I thought better safe than sorry, there did seem to be an odd rattle in that area so we did it. I will check the other suggestions thank you

Re: New Owner 1993 500E

This car is very definitely a keeper. Put the time, money and effort into it in a methodical fashion to get her where she needs to be, and you will have a very nice ride on your hands.

Welcome to the forum. Looking forward to more of your story as it unfolds.

Cheers,
Gerry

Re: New Owner 1993 500E

Thanks Gerry.

That burl wood is TOO hot!! Nice car. I'm sure you'll deal with the paint. Most detailers admit that when it comes to hiding blemishes, silver is right up there with white.

It must have been kept outside. My '92 had 60k on it when I bought it 4 years ago, and it didn't show that much wear from the elements (paint, headlight fade, rust around sunroof -- none of that was present on mine). But it was a FL car most of its life, garaged and covered with the rest of the prior owner's fleet. Still, you'll have fun with the car. They pop back to life at that mileage.

Welcome and cheers!!

Thanks Maw, if I do keep it, we are moving to Jupiter in a month, that should spark life into her.

That burl has a lot of character. I would love to see what Madera could do with it.

As far as flipping and J40 restorations, there's at least one other guy here who's into both and can speak intelligently about both markets. I think it's Drew in NC, but don't quote me. I saw a couple at Amelia Island last month, and I can't imagine they're as fun as the 500E's although I cannot speak to the economics.

Cheers,

Re: New Owner 1993 500E

It's an affliction. I am a Benz guy. I also love FJ's it's an over engineering thing I think. The truth is Unimogs are my favorite it's a combining both, lol.
This car is just coming into my life unplanned and unexpected. I really can't swing the two, I have some decisions to make. Cash flow was tight doing the 40 over, then I bought this thing, and my gut tells me this is the right car.
Problem is I bought it to flip it.
I really don't know how to swing both.
We will see, I have some decisions to make.
