Hi everybody.

I bought a 500E a couple of months ago in Arizona and shipped it back to Germany. It has gotten new Carlsson CR 1/12 wheels, a brilliant new paintjob, Euro spec Headlights and some minor cosmetics so far... I'll keep you updated! ;-)

Hope, you like it!

Best regards, Stefan

This is, how I bought it:

Congrats with your new ride, Stefan!:clapper:

It looks great with the Euro headlight upgrade. Did you respray the entire car?

Cheers

Re: OWNER - 500E comes back to its roots

Car looks beautiful. Is it 040 or 199, I can't quite tell on my monitor.

Very nice! Congrats on your new ride :-)

Re: OWNER - 500E comes back to its roots

Very nice work so far. What made you shipped one from the US ?

yes, it's 199. but it's the darker version of it by standox (standoblue). looks awesome!

i took one from arizona since a lot of 500e's around here have rust issues. and i hate rust! so i took this as a perfect basis for a nice restauration.... ;-)

and I love some us-specs, which i combine with the euro specs. such as the parking light in the corner lights, the rear siemarkers and us-typical tinted windows. let's say i took the best of both versions and combined it.

then a bit of a personal note, such as the wheel, a black suede headliner and really small mods.

next step will be a nice old school hifi installation. i'll take a good old alpine 7903 deck and some hifonics gen-x amps. no digital-whatever-technical new age crap allowed here. it's gonna be old school like in the 90s! bass/treble, lots of power and a volume knob instead of mutliple processors!

it's gona be a cool piece of autobahn history. :-)

I love your approach ! It so nice that there are people out there who really appreciate 036, take a great care and modify it in a proper old fashioned way.

Respect ! It is going to be another beautiful 036 .

Some of the 036's die some of them start completely new life .

Rust is no issue in our region, Last week I checked a 500E which had clogged water tunnels in the trunk for years and the trunk accumilated water after washing the car. It had residues but no rust what so ever... even had a deep ding with damaged paint for years...no rust here !

Very good results !!!

What color have you used on the lower cladding & bumpers ?

It seems darker & also more matte than original "Alto grey" satin finish .

you're correct. we used "lautitgrau met. (code 7204)" since altograu was too bright on the dark 199. ;-)
and we used satin top coat with it. came out quite nice.

What a wonderful idea with the darker gray color. Congrats!

The concept of taking a 500E back to the fatherland is interesting. Like E type jags and bug-eye Sprites and such being repatriated. If you don't mind, I'm curious about what a paint job costs in Germany, how long the shop kept the car, etc. Did you do any of the stripping work yourself? It is a real novelty to me to think of having a shop familiar with MB cars on almost every street corner, so to speak. Here we have dealerships, which have mixed reviews, and most of us come to find (one way or another) a treasured "indy" or independent shop that we trust. The trouble with mine is that they are more than an hour away, and they are small shop with no loaner cars, so it's a bit of a pain to drop my car off, etc. But I digress. Your car looks fabulous and it's great to have you on the board!

Rgds,
Chris

the paint job was quite expensive, since it was painted in several layers and then grinded down to a smooth surface, bevor being polished up to high gloss again. it's a piece of handwork by a friend of mine. it's his masterpiece to show to others, which are interested in perfect paintjobs. notice, there's no wrinkled surface at all, like you see it usually on new paintjobs. ;-)

we were quite lucky, the substance of the car was pretty good. it didn't have any big dents or bondo or whatsoever. just a bad us-pantjob on the hood, where the clearcoat cracked, so we had to sand down the hood to the bare metal, bevor starting over again...

small update - i finally found a nice apline 7909 deck for a reasonable price. :-) the hifi system will be installed in few days... can't wait for the nice old school approach! :-)

for those who are wondering about the alpine 7909: http://www.alpine.com/e/corporate/award/200902/

we'll combine it mb quart speakers, jl audio subs and looooots of hifonics gen-x power (i've got a zeus and several other amps lying 'roud waiting for getting back in the old days... ;-))

Nice! Which version did you get? The 30th anniversary edition, Japan model, Euro or US? I couldn't find a 7909 for a "reasonable" price....that being something under $1k and so settled on the Clarion DRZ9255.
