I have been semi-lurking on the board– but this weekend I finally got the chance to take some pictures of the car – both it and the weather was in the condition that I was willing and able to – plus I was actually in town to take photos.

Bought as a 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] vehicle – I can only have more when I have somewhere to park them, -the 036 was one of several options on my list,.

After searching for 4 months, viewing dozens of different cars - in several parts of the country – and experiencing more odd buying situations in that short time than I have in over 20 years – that could be a thread in itself – this was the only 036 I looked at and I went back several times before agreeing to purchase it.

I have wanted a W124 – almost any W124 – for many years. Mercedes have run in the Family – my Father has owned several over the years (W111, 114, 116 and C126), and I have owned a couple of W202’s since moving over here, although I have been going through a “Jaguar” period recently – still have my XJ8 - but the 036 has been getting more use recently

Since I bought it, I have been very happy – it seems to get better with more use, although I have only managed to do around 1200 miles– the main problem is I travel a lot for work, so its more a case of lack of opportunity.

It’s only needed minor things since purchase, replaced the air-filter mounts, coolant level sensor, coolant hose by the firewall and the Bulb Failure module – that last one was a real pain to track down. But it has had a lot of care before I bought it – it came with the requisite stack of Invoices that a lot of these cars seem to have.

Other than that I have done the Euro light conversion. It is on the list is to remove the factory phone – sadly easier said than done because whomever installed the cradle for the handset thought it would be great to glue it in, instead of screw it in and I can’t yet see how to remove it without causing major damage to the center console

Can’t say enough good things about this forum, info is easy to find, LOTS of it and all very useful and no patronizing “use the search” type responses. – what more could you ask for?

That’s enough rambling – here are some pics, I know the front number plate is bent; I am getting some Texas “State of the Arts” Plates this week.

Wow, your car looks great! Where did you find it? Miles?

Let me know when you have a day or two in town, we can grab some coffee.

There's a 500E lurking around the flying fish in Addison every now and then. I wonder if this is the one.

Its been over a year of ownership, since the last post, my 036 has been going better and ever and is going to be my semi daily driver, I am “splitting duties” between it and my latest purchase.

For me its not been a money pit, over the year, I got a new windshield – PGW, the new name for PPG – the replace the original that had was so pitted that driving into the sun was impossible.

I also replaced the cap/rotors with Bremi – should be considered a maintenance/service item.

This week brought the first big replacements, new front right wheel bearing and valve cover gaskets and the brake pads will need doing soon, getting the Akebono Ceramics for $78 for the full set was a total bargain!

Next Project is to investigate the Stereo, previous Owner replaced it with an Alpine Unit – the front right speaker doesn’t work at all and it “reboots” if you crank the volume high or go over a bump in the road.

So far I am very Happy Bunny

*sigh*

Replacing the valve gaskets disturbed the Upper Engine Wiring Harness to crumbs - I thought it had already been done as the previous owner had replaced pretty much everything else - guess I should have been clued in by a lack of tag.

Of course this all happens as my parents flying in from England for Christmas and I loan them the 036 while they are here, MB Gainsville had the best price - $425 with shipping but would have to get it from the west coast, so I got it direct from Tom MB Classic Center @ $451 plus shipping @ $20 or so for Saturday Delivery

FWIW as parts.com is now useless, there is http://www.autonationpartsdirect.com/ - you can search by part number - unless I am mistaken they were the supplying dealer for parts.com.

Harness arrived on Saturday as promised, interesting to see the difference on the date code tag on the harness and when it went into Stock in the MB parts warehouse. Anyway just ready to get it on the car and the car back on the road...

FCP quoted me $421.60 on a harness for my E-420 with free shipping on Friday. Call Len EXT 212 for that price.

I needed the part ASAP to get the car back on the road, and Tom had it in stock, a Couple of places did beat Classic Center's Price but needed a couple of days to get the 500E harness.

I have found that Tom will usuall match a price.

Tom will match or BEAT any quoted, legitimate price you provide him. His shipping costs are very reasonable, as well.

Lionel @ MB of Gainesville is $370 for the E420 harness. 124-440-1906

$496 is full MSRP, $421 is $50 more the Lionel.

Free 2 day Fed-Ex shipping also from Lionel, no minimum purchase.

Ouch, $471, I guess when you need it asap you have to pay the tax (penalty)

TXBRIT,

I would use Florida just because things come a little quicker California and all my orders have been spot on. I really like working with the Gainsville guys.

Michael

Lionel at MB Gainsville, was my first call - but he needed a couple of days to get the Harness from California, so I figured pay a few extra $$$

MB Naperville can also get the harness drop-shipped overnight directly to you from an MB Parts warehouse, as long as MBUSA has the part in stock.

Of course that costs extra, but sometimes you need a part "ASAP" when you've got an open job and want to get the car back on the road ASAP.

There are times when it's "worth it" to pay more money for expedited service, though I realize that not everyone subscribes to this train of thought.

Cheers,
Gerry

Harness was installed earlier this week, only for the ETA to replacing as well - doing the valve cover gaskets disturbed everything on top of the engine, so it was a case of when, not if

Any other time of year, I could have looked at getting it rebuilt - and I am not a huge fan of used parts - although seeing the price of an EZ that may change, as well as a few other things I am going to put into Stock.

With Family in town for Christmas - it needed to go back on the road sooner rather than later, so a refurbished one from Beckmann came in 2 days - its back on the road and driving better than ever.

Lesson is - I should keep my mouth truck about it not being a money pit.

Holy Cr*p has it really been almost 6 years since I was last active on this board...

I am still alive and just this past week - "re-activated" my 036 from storage - its going like a charm, just cleaning things up and seeing what needs fixing & replacing before deciding on the next steps....

I say each time I should be more active...

Car is going well - thats fatal words if ever there was something...

Every Few Weeks I get a knock on the Door - "Hey would you be interested in selling your old Mercedes, I'll pay cash" - I really should play along and see what they offer, I don't have the patience - so saying $30K shuts them up.

Attempted to go for the State Inspection - as if was bad enough that the tech couldn't read the Insurance Card claiming it expired in September last year, then followed up with "So which Model Jaguar is this?" (The card had 1 Jaguar and 3 Mercedes listed)

Its only the TX Safety, but I ended up leaving.... FML

I walk up and say need a safety inspection only. Even though it is the same guy dong it forever, I still get a little anxious as he drives along the parking lot of distracted people.
