Paint: Hood "Pull" Mechanism

I'm finally getting around to painting the hood pull mechanism and want it to match the glossy black of my after-market, avant-garde grill. I know very little about paint, but would ideally like a spray-can solution for this.

Also, I'm pretty sure that the hood pull is made of plastic so the paint product would have to be suitable for that application. I could either use something offered by Tower Paint (http://www.apstowerpaint.com/), although I wouldn't know which product to select, or perhaps something from my local Home-Depot????

Any guidance this would be appreciated.

Yes you would need a plastic primer first. There are plastic primers available in rattle cans in white or grey colours for example.

Use hot soapy water and a scotch pad to clean the plastic handle first. Then allow to totally dry & preferably give it another wipe with pre paint degreaser. This avoids 'fish eyes' in the paint finish. It's like white spirit only less caustic.

Then apply 2 coats of the plastic primer lightly about 20 minutes apart. Allow that to cure for around 4 hours then follow with 2 more light coats of Gloss Black acrylic paint from a rattle can. Again you want to apply light even coats & avoid runs in the paint. Allow each coat to totally 'flash off' or dry evenly before applying a second coat. Usually this takes about 20 minutes so I make a cup of tea whilst waiting :-)

As for the paint, any local Auto Store should be able to sell you the 2 cans you need over the counter. Just regular 1k rattle can plastic primer + 1 can of gloss black.

Might I also suggest that you file down the center "fin" so that it doesn't mar the surface. It is right under the arrow, not all of it but about half.

Ah, that's a good suggestion. Although...too late...the surface has already been marred...
