part # driveshaft center support??

Having combed parts.com, autohausaz and Peachparts / Pelican, I can't seem to find the driveshaft center support carrier for sale. Is this a dealer only item?
Does anyone have the part #?
I have both flex discs coming today, and my center support looks solid, but thought I'd change it too if I can find the part.

Thank you,

Doug

I think Uro makes one too.

No acceptible aftermarket- parts.com (is the dealership). Bearing is a standard 6006 double seal(ed) brg. You can pick a good brand like INA, NTN, SKF(non mexico), etc.

Hi Michael,
I'd like to change the whole unit. Rubber carrier appears it could fail one day. Rather not drop the exhaust and tins again for this issue.
Do you have a part # (not just bearing)?

Mine appears fine, bearing makes no noise, but not sure of age.

thank you for your reply!

Doug

The center support is p/n 124-410-08-81, Autohaus only shows Meyle which I wouldn't buy, and it's out of stock anyway. If you look it up at ElAutoParts, they cross-reference this to WorldPac number K1030-231782 for a Genuine MB part, which you can then order from Autohaus if desired. Or, check with your local dealer.

I would only get OE / Genuine for this particular part. The new support does NOT include a new bearing.

DO NOT get anything other than factory for this carrier. Aftermarket but high-quality bearings are OK to use (per what samiam44 says) but just get the factory parts through parts.com

Coincidentally I'm getting ready to do this exact job on my 560SEC this coming weekend. You have to drop the exhaust system (don't have to remove it totally from the car) to get enough room to gain access. Also you have to be VERY careful so as to mark things at the driveshaft to ensure correct alignment and balance upon re-assembly.

Doing the center support bearing is also an excellent time to do the flex disc(s) if they show any signs of wear, or you don't know that they've been done in the past 5+ years or more than 50K miles. Again, it's HIGHLY ADVISABLE to go with the factory part on the flex discs, and NOT to go with URO, Meyle or other brand flex discs.

Generally with the center support bearing, you'll hear (and sometimes feel) a loud clunk or clicking noise when you get on or let off on the throttle. That's generally the way you can tell that it's bad. Quite often it is the actual rubber carrier itself that is bad, not the bearing, but I recommend that the bearing AND carrier be replaced at the same time -- don't re-use the bearing as new ones are cheap.

A new drive-shaft center-support bearing/carrier should last upwards of 150K miles with no problem. The one on my 560SEC has gone 206K miles; it's been clicking for the past, say, 10-12K miles and I finally got off my duff to get the parts (and a spare flex disc, as my current discs are ~2 years old and in good shape, recently inspected). I'll have time starting with my holiday vacation this weekend to get some of these long-standing jobs DONE, and this one is number-one on my list. Will take and post photos on the C126 sub-forum, but they should be highly applicable to the E500E as well. The parts are of a near-identical design, and the process is almost exactly the same for removal/replacement.

Cheers,
Gerry

Hi Gerry,
this might be the only time I am one step ahead of you! :D
My (Genuine MBZ) flex joints (along with new exhaust hanger rubber hardware come today. I've sourced genuine bearing and support carrier which I will pickup later today. I spent the most time cleaning the undercarriage, which was actually very clean to begin with. I did have to remove the heat shields surrounding the steering idler to gain more range of motion for the exhaust. I kept the exhaust in place, just supported.
I'm planning on a few hours to re-assemble later tonight.

To add to thread, Dave M. provided me the center support / carrier part #: 124-410-08-81 and the cross-reference this to WorldPac number K1030-231782

The driveshafts have alignment marks in the event you separate without marking. One mark on the front and two on the rear. They are just on the flanges outboard of the splined interface. Center the one mark within the two and you are golden.
Best,

Doug

124-410-08-81 is the correct number for the support, and 008-981-43-25 for the bearing. I have no problem matching or beating prices at our dealer level.

Recently did this job too. A bit time consuming without the proper tools, but pretty straightforward. The support was about $70 @ parts.com and the bearing I bought aftermarket (but still oem) for ~$13.

As mentioned, replace those flex discs while you're there to avoid doing essentially the same job twice.

The only symptom I had was a clunking any time I was not on the throttle. Both decel and coasting.

The one tip I have is that the center locking nut does not need to be completely loosened to separate the two half-shafts. It may not even need to be touched. You will want to tighten it when you're done though. Just don't overdo it. It can be easy to overtorque using a wrench that big. Especially since most of us don't have open ended torque wrenches :)

The center locknut should not be tightened so much that the two halves of the shaft will not slide in & out. Make sure they will still move with light effort before you put it all back together...

I did not gorilla tighten mine but what purpose is served allowing the splined joint to slip? is it for just thermal expansion?

The engine and differential both move slightly on their mounts, plus a tiny bit thermal expansion may be possible. It doesn't move much but almost every driveshaft that I've taken apart slides in & out easily. I believe the FSM says to grease the splines during assembly.

interesting. I did clean and grease the splines too and changed the boot - the plastic boot is a definite improvement. It should outlast the rubber one, as well. I think I read your FSM posted online.
cheers,

Doug

BTW I ordered my flex discs from pelican parts as they deliver ground overnight to my home from their Carson warehouse. The flex discs were $93 and SGF brand but packaged in a Febi box.

A few notes:

The center support carrier DOES NOT contain a new bearing. It is only the round metal and rubber carrier for the bearing & driveshaft.
The bearing comes as part of a separate repair kit, which has the bearing, two hard seals and a rubber boot. The bearing, hard seals and rubber boot are also available from MB as separate items. Since the seals and boot are what I consider "soft items," and I have a rule about NEVER buying non-Mercedes OE "soft items" (particularly rubber) - it is advisable to purchase the kit from MB and save a few bucks over buying the items separately.

Just as a reference:

The late W126/C126 driveshaft center support carrier (with the rubber insert) is part number 124 410 07 81.
The late W126/C126 driveshaft center support repair kit (with bearing, seal and new rubber boot) is 124 410 01 10.
The W126/C126 driveshaft center support bearing (by itself) is 008 981 43 25 (same as the W124 bearing).

I will be posting a HOW-TO article in the C126 sub-forum soon on the replacement of the W126/C126 center support & bearing.

Cheers,
Gerry

P.S. A couple of other notes of interest....
— The pedestrian 124s (E320 sedans, wagons, etc.) use the same center support bearing carrier as the W126/C126, which is different from the one used (as above) with the 034/036
— UROparts makes a replacement kit for the pedestrian 124/126 center support carrier, which retails at AutohausAZ for around $11 (from an MB list price of over $100). DO NOT use this URO part (and do not use the aftermarket Meyle part for the 034/036 version) !!!
