Pin 17 code 8, no second gear, "Check control valve B-1 for ease of operation."?

What is the problem you are having?

EZL code 8 is related to the O/L switch, not a loss of second gear.

Yes but the OL switch is driven by hydraulic pressure related to the B1 piston. I have two gears, 1st and 3rd.

1st, For no 2nd gear try changing the
transmission fluid and filter.

2nd, Also you can try adjusting the
transmission modulator @gsxr / Dave is modulator the correct word?

3rd, If all else fails remove the valve body
clean completely and check out the B1
piston.

4th, Get transmission rebuilt.

Help me understand the modulator here. Mine is leaking so its unhooked currently and FCP just delivered a replacement. I also have a replacement OL switch as well. If I can get away with just replacing the modulator that would be great. If I have to replace both and redo a B1 or valve body, I might as well pull the trans.

@luckymike, I can't recall if you posted about this before. Do you mean the trans skips 2nd gear at light throttle, but you get 2nd gear at full throttle (1-2 upshift)?

The modulator controls shift firmness only.
The O/L switch has nothing to do with controlling when a shift occurs.

Neither will fix a shift RPM issue, assuming that's what both are describing, i.e. the trans appears to skip 2nd gear and shift from 1st to 3rd.

Thanks for confirming gsxr! I've done a good amount of searching and have yet to find someone who posted results.

I can't make this up... pulling out of the car meet (Atlanta Old Benz Club) this afternoon, I lit up the rear wheels and layed down a surprising amount of rubber. I must have built up a enough pressure in the Trans to blow out something in the valve body. I now have 4 working gears!!! I didn't mention it here but 4th was also missing. The old Italian tune up FTW!!!!

@gsxr yes, at light throttle the trans skips 2.

I only experience second gear under two conditions. 1. From a full, or near full throttle start from a dead stop, and 2. During normal acceleration, by quickly flicking the shifter from D to N and back to D at about 15-20mph. Otherwise, during normal, light throttle acceleration, the car will wind out in first gear until 24mph then jump straight to third.

There is a third condition that I recently discovered. If I'm coasting down a slight grade (after a full stop) which then requires acceleration between 15-20mph or so, I'll sometimes discover that the trans has shifted to second.

Now that I think about it, during a fairly low-speed kickdown, the trans is reluctant to shift from 3-2, rather jumping all the way to 1. Not great for passengers.

Weird.
