Hi,
Do you have any idea of the price of a 50.000 miles M119 500 E engine without any auxiliaries ?
I have the opportunity to get one in very good conditions.

Re: Pirce of a E500 engine

By the way, is there a M119 unique to the E500 and if the answer is yes, how can I check that the engine is a proper .036 engine ?
Thanks

Re: Pirce of a E500 engine

Read the serial number stamped on top of the engine, then post it. Someone on this site (not I) can verify weather it is a 5.0 or a 4.2.

Re: Pirce of a E500 engine

The SL 129 and the 140 chassis used the same basic engine however there are some differences regarding things like oil pan, injection system and possibly front cover. In the US, an engine with 100-140,000 miles can be had for around $1,200.00. Availability may differ over there but i would think a 50,000 mile M119 would be worth $2,000-2,500.00 if the condition could be verified.

Re: Pirce of a E500 engine

The R129 engine is nearly identical to the W124 and they are plug & play. The W140 motors have different exhaust manifolds, oil pan, etc and are NOT a direct swap. You can verify by the first half of the engine serial number... 119.970 is W140, 119.972 is R129, 119.974 is W124 (for 5.0L displacement). In the USA these would be in the USD $2k-$4k range (approx) if the low mileage could be verified. Photos attached show the location of the engine number on early & late motors. The value is higher if the engine includes ancillaries such as a good/late ETA, MAF, wiring harness, or other accessories. The value would be lower for a bare motor with none of those items.

WARNING: The early (1992 USA model year) engines with 8-rib belt & manual belt tensioner will not work in late (1993-up USA model year) vehicles without significant modifications, because the early engines lack the mounting boss on the timing cover for the automatic belt tensioner used with 6-rib belt. However you can put a late motor into an early car. Some late-build 1992 motors may have the late timing cover but you'd need to inspect visually, there is no serial number break. If you are installing the spare engine into a 1992 (or older) car with an 8-rib belt, it's not a problem. But if you are installing the engine into a 1993 (approx, or newer) car with 6-rib belt, you will save yourself a LOT of headaches by only buying a newer motor with auto tensioner. Don't ask how I know.

BTW - even with the low mileage, I would still replace all the upper chain rails BEFORE installing it in the car. Measure the chain stretch too and replace the chain if necessary. It's 10x easier to do all this with the engine out of the car. Cheap insurance.

Re: Pirce of a E500 engine

Does the early R129 motor with KE injection, carry the 119.972 subtype number?

Cheers,
Gerry

No, the CIS-E M119's will have a 119.960 prefix, used only on the 129.066 chassis.

The 119.972 motors (which are plug+play in a W124) are used in the 129.067 chassis.

Re: Pirce of a E500 engine

Thanks for your answers.
The fact is that I don't really need a second engine because my 1994 E 500 has less than 95.000 miles and the engine is perfect.
It is just to know if it is worth buying a low mileage bare engine now and stock it for the future as I intend to keep the car.
Still have to make up my mind...
Alex
