Pump for differential fill, trans fill, etc.

I would like to buy a pump that I can use to fill diff and trans fluids for the various cars in my garage. Looking on Amazon, there are lots of hand pump models made by “sneaky pete”. However, the variety is bewildering. Some work w 28mm mouth quart bottle. Some work with 38mm mouth bottles. Yet still others specifically do NOT work with Redline bottles. Some pump 30 cc per stroke and pump a whole quart in 30 pumps. Others, at 8cc per stroke, require 100+ pumps per qt. 😬😬😬😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

Is there a model that just works with EVERYTHING? Should I get one with its own chamber to avoid the 28mm/38mm/non-redline uncertainty? Should I get one powered by shop air? Advice welcome. Thanks.

Following... Need to change multiple fluids in multiple cars. I too was looking at the similar items as a set

FWIW I have been reading that redline quart bottles use some kind of non-standard cap sizing that no pump works with.
Because of course. 🤦

Seems that many people pour quarts of redline ATF / 75W90NS / 75W140NS / etc into GALLON jugs which have standard sizing caps and make stuff work that way with a hand pump.

I am considering pouring my redline stuff into gallon jugs and doing this:

Now I have to consider how nice I want to make this.

FWIW... I use a funnel taped to a hose, to fill the differential. The Motul Gear 300 is very thin and flows easily with gravity, other lubes are thick and take a long time to flow. Heat the lube to speed things up. Or get all fancy with a pump...

Okay, Motive makes a fancy schmancy pump, replete with hook shaped aluminum dispenser wand to allow you to hang the dispenser in the fill hole without having to hold it. Then even sell the wand separately.

I'm not paying $90 clams for that. Enter Home Depot at $12. I figure it's OK to use HD plastic sprayers w/ gear oil since it is not as corrosive as brake fluid. Mebbe.

Bring it home, remove the sprayer tip, heat the plastic dispenser wand to make it look like the fancy Motive wand, and drill a hole in the tank to add a Schrader valve to allow pressurization w/ a battery operated tire pump. Note that the Home Depot product comes with a yellow pressure release valve that also automatically vents pressure at around 35-40psi.

I'll have to see how this works next.

Well I haven't used this tool yet, but in anticipation of using heavy weight oils like 75W140NS in the trans/diff of my sport-beetle, I decided.....
to increase the pressure capability of my Home Depot Tool.
  1. I took apart the plastic relief valve on the Home Depot sprayer. I filled it with hot melt glue. Now it no longer automatically opens at 35 psi.
  2. Installed two 1/8" NPT Female bulkhead fittings from Amazon to the sprayer to via red neoprene garden hose washers I had laying around to mount
    1. A 60 psi pressure gauge (1/8" NPT - back mount)
    2. A manual brass release valve
Well, it holds at 45 PSI ! I have no reason to push my luck. Now to find some time to use this tool....

This tool works great. First I tried 30 psi but 40 psi works better. It took me 2 minutes to pump in about 1.4 quarts of 60F Mobil-1 75W-90. The best part is using the trigger on the Home Depot sprayer to control the flow. I just held the trigger down and waited for the oil line to go down from 2 qts to 0.6 qts and sure enough, at 1.4, I got a little dribble coming out of the fill hole that I caught with a rag.

No mess, no drips. Changing the gear oil was a pleasure.

What a great tool for about $38!

@Jlaa Loving it! Glad it works so well! Now, if one was to take it a step further, and modify it a little more to use it for transmission fill (722.9 etc), what kind of quick connect adapter would you use to swap the wand to transmission adapter as in this thing https://www.amazon.com/Manual-Transmission-Filling-Transfer-Adapters/dp/B086638SVP ?
I used these quick disconnect on my motive power bleeder and if I wanted to use quick disconnects on my HDX pump to switch out from 75W90 gear oil to ATF I would use the same quick disconnects: Powercare 1/4 in. Male to 1/4 in. Female Quick-Connect NPT Brass Coupler AP31038B - The Home Depot

These are made for fluid (they are pressure washer disconnects) (and hold a ridiculous pressure too). However they are a little pricey. I am not sure if regular quick disconnects made for air tools would work. Maybe they would? Not sure if one is suppose to run fluid/oil in regular air-tool disconnects.....

I should also mention ---- there will always be a few drops of 75W gear oil in the HDX pump (because its not easy to clean it out 100%). I don't mind if I'm always using the HDX for gear oil - my MB takes 75W90 and my sport beetle takes a mixture of 75W90 and 75W140. However, what happens if ATF and gear oil mix ---- is that really bad?

I have no idea. Maybe one should use another HDX pump only for ATF? Making the pump is cheap....

You bringing in a great point! For the very little cost involved with HDX pump, mind as well just make 2, one for the diff, one for the transmission. :cheers1:

I wonder if these fittings will work directly with transmission filler nozzle as this one

I can't find any details of what type of connection it's using or description on any of those... I guess I can just buy the filler adapter, then stop by home depot and test it?

Well, the advertisement on that fitting --- I have no idea what kind of fitting that is?

It doesn't seem to be an automotive / tru-flate / Parker fitting:

^^ This visual is very helpful, thank you! And agree, doesn't look like anything true automotive, and yet, so many fittings are sold with in the pump kit.

The closest I could find (and still not knowing what it really is) is this kit:

I think what I'm going to do, is go with this kit from amazon, same fittings as you did and 2 Gal HDX sprayer, that should me more suitable for transmission fill (capacity wise) HDX 2 Gallon Multi-Purpose Lawn and Garden Pump Sprayer 1502HDXA - The Home Depot then do exactly what you did with the 1 gal, and designate it for gearbox and diff fluids.

Or... you can buy a purpose-built 6-liter ATF pump that comes with an adapter assortment.

This is the unit I have, works for 722.9, ZF6, ZF8, and similar slushboxes:

Dave, I like, one thing, hand pump only?

So I did order it 2 weeks ago, but no response, card not charged, so I canceled it. Did online search for 10L, this is what came up with a reasonable price and all the pieces one need: VEVOR Transmission Fluid Pump Amazon had it too, so I figured let's try... I can't purchase all the components (container, attachments, vent, adapter, gauge, etc for $80, and Amazon's is really hassle free).

It arrived today (2 days)... I will proved feedback when I get to use it next weekend, but so far, it's built nice, all components included, all fit it nicely, nothing missing

The diff dispenser I'm doing @Jlaa style (and will be using attachments supplied with this unit)

@Jlaa, I just ordered the relief valve, the gauge and the two bulkhead fittings. Will they sit on the shelf or will I actually make this thing? Stay tuned...

Make it!!! I have used this tool three time now!

- Once on my 036 - 75W90 @ 45 psi
- Once with you on your 034 - 75W90 @ 45 psi
- Just yesterday w my w210 - 85W90 @ 52psi !

@Jlaa Just waiting on the gauge now. What did you use to seal the bulkhead fittings at the tank?

PS. Never mind. Looks like garden hose gaskets will work nicely.
